Written In The Stars By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them. So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted
nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly. I was impressed, to say the least. So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised? It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”
It coincides with the ageold question: can we alter our destinies, or is our fate predetermined? Normally, this contemplation is reserved for our path in life as a whole, not necessarily the many facets of our specific being – but the question is valid, nonetheless. I suppose, as with anything, there is a happy medium of open mindedness and reservation that serves us best. Reading into anything can bring mixed results; but there is no substitute for stepping back and seeing a situation – or a person – for what it truly is.

PROUD CONGRATS - Anthony Gilman is currently a senior at North Babylon High School. He has done exceedingly well in all his courses and will be attending Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where he plans on exploring the field of Paleontology. Anthony recently became an Eagle Scout in March 2014, after completing a comprehensive garden project at the Masera Learning Center in West Islip. Anthony was responsible for the execution of the demolition of the current space, as well as the planning and supervision of the building of the new, more aesthetically pleasing garden. This included the building of a raised stone flower bed, and the planting of over 20+ perennials. His entire family is very proud of him.

Special Happenings Continued From 16 A special treat came at the end of the class when Dayna sang Let It Go from the Disney movie Frozen. The kids were excited to sing along. Dayna discussed how others thought Elsa was a monster because she was different and therefore
had to run away and alienate herself. This created an overall feeling of empathy and understanding of differences. Mrs. Anselona-Troisi, first grade teacher explains, “These social skills need to be taught to children at a young age thus making the world
a more accepting and happier place to live for all. We don’t always know the right thing to say or do, so we need to spread these good manners rules around. We are like the M&Ms, different on the outside but all the same on the inside. We may speak in different languages but we all
smile and cry in the same language. Let’s use our good manner rules to make people smile.” At the end of the program, the children were sent home with a mini bag of M&Ms and most importantly, the message that went along with it. A list of The Good
Manner Rules For Meeting People That Look Different And Learn Differently and a bibliography of books that teach good character were also distributed to the children. The John F. Kennedy Elementary School had a fundraiser for Autism Awareness Day in April
