Routine eye exams should be a vital component of everyone’s healthcare routine. Such examinations can help people learn if they need prescription eyeglasses and if their existing prescriptions need to be updated, and they also can uncover other serious health issues.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology®, a comprehensive eye exam can uncover such problems as aneurysms, brain tumors, diabetes, high blood pressure, and assorted cancers, including those of the blood, tissue or skin.

That means routine eye exams can be as effective at safeguarding your overall health as they can at protecting your vision.

The recommended frequency with which people should receive eye exams is based largely on age, though

no one should hesitate to schedule an exam if their eyes are bothering them or if they are experiencing any abnormalities with their eyes. In addition, some people may need more frequent eye exams depending on their medical histories, which should be discussed at length with a physician.

Children and adults without preexisting conditions and those not experiencing any abnormal vision problems can adhere to this eye examination schedule, courtesy of the American Optometric Association.

• Birth to two years: Children in this age group should receive eye exams between six to 12 months of age.

• Age six to 17 years: Children in this age group should receive one eye exam prior to beginning first grade and then an annual exam thereafter.

• Age 18 to 64: Adults between the ages of 18 and 64 should receive an eye exam at least once every two years.

• Age 65 and older: Annual eye exams are recommended for men and women age 65 and older.

Eye examinations help people preserve and improve their vision while also promoting long-term overall health.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness.

This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip, and has remained open throughout the pandemic. They helped serve those in need during this pandemic by giving them food and gas gift cards, as well as assistance with living expenses.

They are grateful for involvement from local businesses that have held fundrasier events for them and even donated goods to their organization.

This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program, where they will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag.

Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was

inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20.

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected

by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

Fairfield Fifth Graders Test Their Knowledge Digitally Preparing for a test has never been so much fun for fifth graders in Christopher Kiernan’s classroom at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

He recently introduced students to Quizizz, an interactive gaming platform that creates engagement through competition.

To introduce students to

the program, which they use on their Chromebooks, Mr. Kiernan created a “Two Truths and a Lie” game.

Each student had to submit two truthful facts about him or herself and one untrue statement, which became the questions for the game. The children then were tested to see how well they knew their classmates.

As they submitted their

answers, a leaderboard appeared on the Smartboard, and students enjoyed competing to see who earned the most points. Mr. Kiernan said that one of the advantages of Quizizz is that students can answer questions at their own pace. Moving forward, he said he will use the program to give students review questions for tests and quizzes.

The Massapequa School District is welcoming 63 new teachers for the 202021 school year who enter with great enthusiasm. Each school has at least three new teachers, with as many as 12 at McKenna Elementary School.

New faculty members run the gamut from elementary to middle school to high school teachers and span multiple subject areas. The group includes gifted and talented program teachers, librarians, psychologists, reading specialists, social workers, special education teachers and speech

In a Q&A format, Owner and Executive Director of Friends for Life Amy Recco answered some important questions clients may have about healthcare services during this difficult time.

Q: With this Covid-19 Pandemic going on, is it still safe to get an aide for my parent?

A: Surprisingly, now is a good time to have an aide take care of your loved one in their home. Having a second set of eyes on your loved one is so essential during this period, especially if they live alone.

schools, the district held an extensive four-day new teacher orientation program at Massapequa High School from Aug. 18-21.

The program included welcoming remarks from Superintendent Lucille Iconis and Board of Education President Kerry Wachter, an introduction to technology tools and resources, overviews of curriculum, professional development and special education, breakout groups and meetings with department supervisors and building administrators.

In a sign of the times, new

teachers had to wear masks during orientation and complete a daily health questionnaire.

Jaclyn Scorce, a new fifth grade teacher at McKenna Elementary School, said she particularly enjoyed the presentation on technology because she knows that it is one of the best ways to engage today’s students in learning. She wants to give her students access to many different digital tools throughout the year to see what they are capable of creating.
