Walsh Urges Residents To Give The Gift Of Life By Donating Blood On September 26th

With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh and Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, September 26th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Councilwoman Walsh stated, “Blood supplies are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can

be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.”

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. “Surviving Breast Cancer: Empower yourself with nutrition and a healthy lifestyle” is a free forum to be held on Friday, September 22 from 12 noon to 1 pm on zoom.

Dr. Heather Zinkin, a radiation oncologist at Northwell Health in Huntington, will provide important information to empower patients to take hold of their health. Topics to be discussed include health screenings, prevention, vaccines, and more.

Dr. Heather Zinkin has a special interest in integrative medicine, patient wellness and nutrition. She attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She graduated from NYU School of Medicine and performed her medical internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She completed a residency in radiation oncology at a

combined program at Tufts and Brown University and served as chief resident. She then returned to her hometown where she has been practicing for the past 15 years and was appointed Chief of Radiation Medicine at Huntington Hospital. She has given many survivorship lectures both in hospital and community settings including active participation

in the Northwell Wellness Center. She has also served on various physician panels for community education and holds certificates in Nutrition from Cornell University.

Allen Park in Farmingdale on Saturday, September 23rd at 7 p.m. This free concert will offer residents one last chance to enjoy some free musical entertainment before the fall season officially arrives. The Lords of 52nd Street features the legends of The Billy Joel Band, including Richie Cannata, Liberty DeVitto, and Russell Javors.

YES Community Counseling Center Launches Safe Summer Program, In Partnership With Morgan Stanley

While the summer conjures images of children creating lasting and carefree memories, for many children who experience chronic stress, live in an unsafe environment, experience chronic stress, or lack financial resources, the summer months can be a time of sadness and isolation. Living in a household where poverty, family turmoil, abuse, parental illness or addiction exists may lead to children lacking appropriate supervision and healthy connections when school is not in session. While many of the local school districts offer low cost camp and recreational opportunities over the summer months, many families cannot afford these expenses.

Made possible by Morgan Stanley, YES Community Counseling Center launched a Safe Summer Program in which 13 youth from the surrounding

communities were able to attend local camps and recreation programs, who would not have had the opportunity to do so due to financial hardship. Research demonstrates that environmental protective factors can prevent the onset of mental health challenges and early initiation of substance use for children and teens.

“As we know, prevention is far more effective than intervening in response to the onset of emotional and behavioral symptoms that a child may demonstrate without the proper support,” said Adrienne LoPresti, Executive Director of YES. One mother who was able to enroll her children in karate and dance classes shared “The kindness you showed and the happiness you brought to my family will never be forgotten. One day, rather sooner than later, I promise to pay forward.”

Many of the families who have received support from YES over the years have overcome the challenges they once faced and decided to give back to others who now need help. In the spirit of Morgan Stanley’s core value of giving back to the community, Stephen Parmiter, Senior Vice President and member of the Parmiter Group expresses, “We are excited to work with YES to provide children in need with the opportunities that they deserve.” In addition, Morgan Stanley staff volunteers worked with YES staff to create “coping boxes” for the program recipients and other children who attend YES programs. The coping box acts as an emotional tool kit, with items that the children can rely on for self-soothing, comfort, and grounding when they are home or feeling unsafe.

Village Mayor Danny Pearl announced a partnership with Drug Free Long Island and the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) to host a ‘Shed the Meds’ Drug Take Back Day at Massapequa Park Village Hall on Saturday, September 23rd from 10:00am – 1:00pm.

“This Drug Take Back Day is a great opportunity to rid your medicine cabinet of old and unwanted prescription drugs,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Through proper disposal of old medications, we

can prevent them from contaminating the environment through improper disposal and also keep them out of the wrong hands and away from young people.”

In cooperation with Drug Free Long Island and the Nassau County Police Department, the Town and Village will host this event at Massapequa Park Village Hall, in the back parking lot. This program is anonymous. For those who cannot attend this Drug Take Back Day, disposal containers are located at all Police Precincts throughout the county for safe deposit.

Labriola & Drug Free Long Island Host Overdose Awareness Ceremony

In recognition of National Overdose Awareness Day, the Oyster Bay Town Board, Drug Free Long Island, the Village of Massapequa Park, and Thomas’s Hope Foundation partnered to host an Overdose Memorial Service and Remembrance

Ceremony. The families and friends of those lost to addiction gathered together to honor their loves ones and commit to building awareness of the opioid epidemic.

“We honor the loved ones who we have lost to addiction

and overdose in the ongoing opioid epidemic,” Town Councilman Steve Labriola said. “We remember them as mothers, fathers, daughters, sons and friends. We remember their smiles, their laughs and the love we have for

them. We cherish the time we had, and wish we had more of it.”

Councilman Labriola especially recognized Janice Talento, Chairwoman of Drug Free Long Island, for her tireless efforts to make

a difference, and also discussed the Town’s efforts to save lives. Public Safety Officers and other employees are trained to administer the overdose reversal agent known as Narcan, and the Town hosts seminars for residents to

learn the warning signs of drug addiction and obtain information on available treatment options. The Town also raises awareness through multiple initiatives, and works with police to take down dealers operating out of houses.

To date, over a dozen local restaurants participate in the program, and more are welcome to join.

“Through is innovative program, the Town seeks partnerships with local restaurants and other entities to collect oyster and clam shells from dinner plates and kitchen preparation tables,” explained Supervisor Saladino. “Town aquaculturists regularly pickup shells from local partners and deliver them to an environmental curing facility. In just our first year, we’ve collected more than 20,000 pounds of oyster and clam shells,

A single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of seawater per day, making shellfish Mother Nature’s most valuable marine cleansers. Studies indicate that by expanding shellfish populations in local harbors we can improve water quality for generations to come. While this program helps the environment, it also helps restauranteurs toward achieving compliance requirements with the New York State Food Donation

and Scraps Recycling Law while also reducing waste carting expenses.
