Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on teenagers. Help is available at most public libraries in the form of a DVD. Some libraries have an older video format.

“It’s meant to encourage teens, to tell them that there is hope out there,” said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ramig is one of three nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation.

David Wilkins, a high school student who stutters, narrates the DVD. It features students from junior high school through college talking about their experiences with stuttering and what they found to be helpful. They talk openly about the ridicule they faced from classmates and how their stuttering affects their lives.

“We really try to emphasize the embarrassment and frustration factor, and we think teens will relate to that,” adds Ramig. He appears in the DVD along with speech-language

Season Of Extremes By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it spring yet? Are we done with the endless parade of winter storms, bringing their onslaught of rain and sleet and slush and snow and ice and all that fun stuff? I know there are those who absolutely LOVE this season and all its wondrous whiteness, but seriously… enough is enough, don’t you think?

Over the last several months, our lives have been literally consumed by national weather forecasts, a succession of storms with oh-so-cute names, a lifetime supply of rock salt

and sand, mad rushes to the store for milk and eggs and bread (you know, for all those “milk” sandwiches you make while snowed in!) and the fabulous process of shoveling, cleaning the car off, shoveling the new mound of icy boulders generously distributed by the plows… and on and on and on. Oh, and that’s before we attempt the treacherous process of actually driving anywhere.

Like I said, is it spring yet?

So many have said that, this year, after the winter we’ve had, they promise not to complain about the heat. 90º and humid?

Awesome, sign me up!

Torrential downpours and thunderstorms? At least we won’t have to shovel!

Island Harvest is a Long Island food bank dedicated to fighting hunger and touching lives.

“In the course of our everyday lives, we sometimes need to be reminded that there are people in need right in our own backyard,” Councilman Macagnone said. “This food drive addresses this need and also builds awareness to this important cause.”

As the L.I. Director for the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters and an officer in Carpenters Local 290, Councilman Macagnone said he truly appreciates the many

colleagues in his industry who take the time to make a positive difference in the community. “First Impressions Entries and Designs, Inc. have provided homeowners with reliable contracting work on Long Island since 1989 and they proudly call the Town of Oyster Bay home,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Throughout their history, they have always been willing to go the extra mile to help those in need. This food drive is evidence of that.”

Among the suggest food items to donate are low sodium canned vegetables, soups and

fruit, canned meat, whole pasta and cereal, nutritional beverages such as Boost and Ensure and personal care items.

“Any person making a donation will be eligible for a raffle courtesy of Waldbaum’s, with the winner receiving a $200 gift card,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Much of the community is coming together to help make this event a success. I can’t thank them enough.”

Ms. Good’s mother, who was seated in the back, should have received the least impact from the crash, but was not wearing a seatbelt.

“I quickly learned that if

I worked hard [in physical therapy] I could make myself stronger,” Ms. Good shared. “Maybe I survived for a purpose.” Her message for Plainedge students was clear: “There’s no safe way to use your phone and drive. I know its cliché, but there really is no excuse to not wear your seatbelt.

I truly believe my mother would be alive today if she had worn her seatbelt.”

The importance of not using your cellphone while driving was reiterated to students at Plainedge High School during a Hang Up And Drive presentation by guest speaker Jacy Good.

Ms. Good was in a tragic car accident the day she graduated from college, which took the life of her parents and left her with a 10 percent chance of surviving the night. Her message of determination in beating the odds and story of how she came to understand how the accident happened offered firsthand insight into the repercussions of not only using your cellphone while driving, but not

There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for next series. There will be no

refunds or makeups, and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters.

“The Rinx Total Skating Program’s philosophy is simple; their staff of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association, teach the fundamentals of ice skating with a major emphasis on fun,” Councilman Coschignano said. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to be able offer these quality skating programs for all participants whether young or young at heart, beginner or champion.”

Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to Learn To Skate by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chris Coschignano.

“Skating lessons for people of all ages take place at our rink throughout the year,” Councilman Coschignano said.

“Registration for Series 4 (March 8th through May 2nd) will begin February 22nd. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone 516.797.4126.”

“Learn to Skate” offers group skating lesson to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are grouped based on age and skill, ranging from snowplow and basic skills through free skate levels.

With support from the New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth), 25 organizations across New York State are ramping up their efforts to prevent diabetes.

Grant awards totaling more than $400,000 will help community-based organizations - from local health departments and health systems to community health centers and YMCAs implement and expand the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP). This 16-week program, which focuses on lifestyle changes to improve healthy eating and physical activity, uses a well-tested model that could help the 4.5 million New Yorkers with prediabetes reduce their risk of developing the disease by 50%.

“New York State is facing a serious and costly health crisis,

with nearly 25% of the population already living with diabetes,” said James R. Knickman, President and CEO of NYSHealth.

“We need to focus energy and resources on preventing the onset of diabetes and a whole host of other health problems related to obesity. The NDPP model is the most well-tested diabetes prevention program out there, and pushing it out to more New Yorkers in some of the hardest-hit communities across the State will be an important component of curbing the diabetes epidemic.”

With this more than $400,000 investment, the Foundation will reach communities with high rates of diabetes and prediabetes, and make the NDPP available to New Yorkers in places where they live, work, and worship. The grantees selected have the

potential for large-scale statewide or regionwide impact on spreading and sustaining the NDPP, which has been lauded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an effective, evidencebased public health program.

The NDPP is a community-based program conducted by trained lifestyle coaches to teach people with prediabetes how to modify their eating and physical activity habits, and to sustain those changes over time. Each one-hour class includes lessons on diet, exercise, staying motivated, overcoming stress, and other behavioral changes, all in a supportive group setting. The goal is to help people reduce their weight through a healthy low-calorie, low-fat diet and by engaging in at least 150 minutes per

week of physical activity.

This evidence-based lifestyle intervention has been shown to help participants lose 5–7% of their body weight and reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 50%.

Grant awards to organizations from the Bronx to Buffalo will support a range of activities to help organizations implement and grow the NDPP, including the expansion of existing programs; communication, outreach, and education activities to obtain a steady flow of participants; and development of business plans to ensure the sustainability of the program.

Plainedge High School students Deepika Dhawan, Justin Law and Christina Szi represented the Plainedge School District at two prestigious research competitions this past weekend. Their papers were selected as social science semifinalists from among thousands

of Long Island and metro area science research experiments considered for the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.

They were invited to give oral presentations about their research at CUNY York College this week.

In addition, these students presented their

projects at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair.

Winning papers will continue on to the regional finals for these competitions.

Their success is the culmination of several years of intense research.

Congratulations to Massapequa Webelos Scouts from Pack 696 this week! They had their Blue & Gold Ceremony over the weekend, which featured their moving up from the status of Cub Scouts to becoming Boy Scouts.

The nine scouts each received their Arrow of Light, the most sought-

after award in Cub Scouting. The Arrow of Light is only presented to those who have the highest commitment to the ideals of scouting and demonstrate the values of service and citizenship in their everyday activities.

Taking The Helm

Daniel Flinn of Massapequa will become commander of the United States Power Squadrons, District 3 (Long Island) at the Melville Marriott on March 15th.

Dan will call his watch and the 16 local squadron commanders within D3 “Dan’s Navigators.” He has achieved the grade of Senior Navigator, the highest squadron grade possible, indicating that he has successfully passed all available advanced grade and elective courses covering every aspect of navigation and seamanship. He hopes others will follow this path, but this year he also wants squadron members to focus on increasing their public service efforts and

improve the diversity of squadron events.

These public service efforts include presenting safe boating classes, providing free vessel safety checks, participating in environmental cleanups and more.

Dan has been a veterinarian for 44 years and owner of the Jericho Animal Hospital. He and his wife Karen enjoy living on the water and look forward to retirement when they can spend more time aboard their boat “Doc’s Retreat”. Dan joined the United States Power Squadrons in 1985, but it wasn’t until 1999 that he started to take on leadership positions, first in the Jones Beach Power Squadron and then later

in United States Power Squadrons District 3 (Long Island). Now as District Commander, he takes on the leadership of all 16 squadrons across Long Island.

Established in 1914, the United States Power Squadrons, “America’s Boating Club,” is the world’s largest non-profit boating organization dedicated to community service, boater education, and boating safety. The staff at St. Joseph Hospital put their hearts into the American Heart Association’s “Go Red” day this year. With each donation, staff received a “Go Red” dress pin and a “Go Red” dress cutout to inscribe the name of

a loved one with heart disease.

Registration Underway Registration is now underway for the Town of Oyster Bay’s spring softball night leagues for men and women hosted by the Town’s Department of Parks, according to Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto. “While we are still in the grips of an icy winter, residents can warm up to the thought of another exciting spring softball season,” Councilman Pinto said. “There is nothing like a great game of softball and the camaraderie of teammates.”

According to Councilman Pinto, the Town of Oyster Bay’s various softball leagues are widely respected, and players look forward to the competition and exercise.

“The leagues are very well organized, and players will have an opportunity to play on fields considered

to be among the finest in the nation,” Councilman Pinto said. “This program offers a great recreational and social outlet for all participants, bringing Town athletes together for night-time softball games that are competitive and fun.”

Men and women’s night leagues generally play Monday through Thursday with games starting between 8 and 9:00 p.m., with the occasional Saturday game.

“Game times and locations will vary throughout the season,” explained Councilman Joseph Pinto.

Only teams with completed registration requirements will be given consideration.

Any team looking to register must also submit insurance certificates (MAIL-IN ONLY) as proof

of insurance along with an endorsement of the policy. All fees and proof of insurance are due no later than April 11, 2014 and can be mailed to Town of Oyster Bay, Department of Parks, Attn: Nina Mollineaux, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, NY 11758.

The day’s proceedings will benefit the more than 1,800 children and adults with disabilities who participate in programs and receive services through UCPN. “An independent, notfor-profit health agency, UCPN, has endeavored to improve the quality of life for people with cerebral palsy and others with severe disabilities and multiple service needs,” explained

Supervisor Venditto. “The organization, which was founded in 1948, also seeks to prevent cerebral palsy and minimize its effects.”

Supervisor Venditto said that, as in past years, the organizers anticipate many hardy individuals from the community taking the plunge to raise funds for UCPN. Furthermore, he stressed that the event needs additional corporate sponsorship, as well as support from community groups, schools, civic and charitable organizations.

“I hope many Town of Oyster Bay residents will come out to Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park to show their support,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“You will have fun while helping an important cause.”

On Sunday, March 2nd, polar bears are expected to be seen swimming in the chilly waters off Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina in Oyster Bay. There is no need to worry, however, because these Polar Bears are about as friendly as they come. Polar Bears are what they call the hearty and caring people who will take part in the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc. (UCPN) 10th Annual Polar Bear Plunge benefit fundraiser. The festivities for this much anticipated event will kick off at 1 p.m. with the polar bears taking the plunge at 2 p.m.
