East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District is doing its part to honor the men and women who have served in the military by participating in the Valentines for Veterans program.

Students throughout the school made cards for veterans to send out for the upcoming holiday.

Kindergartners wrote simple messages such as “You are brave” and “Thank you” following a discussion about bravery. Fourth-graders used Chromebooks to write letters, which they printed out and glued to construction paper to create cards.

“This is to thank them for their service and what they’ve done for our country,” said fourthgrader Michael Snow.

“It’s important for them to know many people are thankful for them. It also teaches us about what they have done.”

Fourth-grade students in Christine Hoehn’s class at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently built longhouse villages as a culminating activity for a social studies unit on Native Americans.

Students depicted how Native Americans used natural resources from the Eastern Woodlands to meet their needs for food, clothing, shelter and transportation.

Three-dimensional printing is creating excitement at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, where students have quickly taken to the new technology.

The 3-D printer is housed in the school’s Makerspace lab, which is part of the library. Students in fourth through sixth grades have begun 3-D printing activities under the direction of librarian Tara

Gonzalez and computer teacher assistant Donna Meyer. They have created small projects such as hashtag words and small objects using the program Tinkercad.

Before they send their item to the printer, which has several choices of colors to use, students must look at their design on the computer from all angles to make sure all dimensions are correct.

Working in groups, they

must cooperate and collaborate to settle on an idea.

“I just think it’s cool to be able to design things on the computer and print them out and make them real,” said fifth-grader Luke Raymond.

While many of the students have heard of 3-D, this is the first time they are experiencing it for themselves.

Art students at Massapequa High School are doing their part to protect an endangered species. Their designs are featured on shirts that are being sold to support the nonprofit Save the Manatee Club.

Sophomores and juniors in Penny Schneider’s Drawing and Painting 1 class created designs using color pencils or markers on

Bristol board. After a vote by teachers, administrators and art students, nine ideas were submitted to the organization, which then selected the top three.

Ms. Schneider said that this project taught the students how to think like graphic designers, as they had to use marketing skills to create designs that would appeal to consumers. The students were also limited to three colors.

This is the second year she has done the project with students and this is a unique fundraiser to protect the manatees.

Last year’s designs led to several hundred T-shirt sales, and she is looking to eclipse that total this year.

“I always like to do something that gives back,” Ms. Schneider said.

“I think that’s important.

Look at the good that a drawing can do.”

Lucas Santangelo, an eighth-grader at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, displayed how much he knows about the world when he was crowned the winner of the schoolwide National Geographic Bee on January 25th. The honor gives him the opportunity to qualify for the state level and, if successful, advance to the

national level.

Seventh-grader Colin Alonso was the runnerup. Ten other students participated in the competition, including eighth-graders Julia Cornell, Emily Fiola, Jack Muscatello, Sean Sartory and Aryon Seraji, and seventh-graders Conor Burns, Emilie Huyler, Michael Jantz, Ashley Jew and Frank Rinaudo.

All students took a qualifying assessment to determine a winner for each team. These winners then participated in the school bee which included oral and written formats, in which students answered questions in rounds.

Doing Their Part Many students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus have pets, which is why they are doing their part to help animals that have not yet found a permanent home.

The school is hosting a blanket and towel drive through February 10th

for a nonprofit dog rescue organization, Redemption Rescues, Inc. This is the second year the school has partnered with the organization, which specializes in pitbulls.

The items collected will go to the families that are fostering the dogs, as they

await adoption.

Members of the Student Council have assisted in the Valentine’s Daythemed collection by decorating the collection box and making fliers to promote the drive. The project is led by computer monitor Patty Carroll.

Snow Days & Days Gone By By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation.

No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere.

Oh, to be a child again…

Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.

“Nowadays,” he said, “you’ll be lucky to get them to look up from their phone for a minute.”

Which brings me to my next point – when, exactly, did it become a requirement for every child from the age of four on up to have their own cell phone? I understand the practical purposes it serves in case of emergencies and all; but you can’t tell me that sending a child to school with a phone is not a distraction waiting to happen. Back in my day (all 17 years ago) we brought quarters for the pay phone. And, if by chance we were low on change, we asked to go to the Main Office, where they were more than happy to let us call home for a ride.

My, how times have changed.

It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems

that once the new millennium began, all relatable historical markers were left in the past, and with them some of the most vivid memories of days gone by. How innocent those days seem now, by comparison.

Of course, the passing years have brought with them many wonderful innovations and improvements; but we seemed to manage just fine at the time, before it even occurred to our imaginations to dream such concepts. We may not have had cell phones back in school, but we knew how to make snow angels and snowmen, and we knew how to enjoy an unexpected day off much better than our adult selves seem to now.

And with that, my shoveling – and my work – is done for the day. It’s on to baking chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa while catching up on some reading for me. Who says a little nostalgia isn’t good for the soul?

A No Brainer Ninth-graders at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus learned about the harmful effects of various substances during a presentation, “Drugs and the Adolescent Brain,” on February 3rd. The speaker was Dr. Stephen Dewey of Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institute for Medical Research.

Dr. Dewey, who met with the entire student body, discussed the negative impacts of caffeine,

tobacco, alcohol, opioids and illegal drugs, and how those substances can stop or slow the development of the brain.

“We wanted the students to realize the long-term effects that drugs can have,” said Denise Baldinger, the district’s health education chairwoman. “A good time can turn into damage that can last a lifetime.”

classes throughout the day to discuss the concept of community mapping.

She spoke of MTA’s efforts to identify places in Massapequa where drug sales or use may be occurring. She sought input from students about these spots, as well as areas they identify as “safe spaces.”

“It’s a community effort to help combat the drug problem,” added Ms. Baldinger.

Souper Bowl of Giving A local food pantry will benefit from the generosity of students at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District who participated in the school’s Souper Bowl.

The drive was organized

by Chief’s Challenge, a character education club under the direction of advisers Marisa Boulukos and Caroline Glynn.

In the week leading up to the Super Bowl,

students were asked to donate canned goods to benefit the Massapequabased Yes Community Counseling Center, which maintains a food pantry.

Announcements were made throughout the week with statistics about hunger on Long Island.

Students could make their donation based on their favored team, as two large boxes were placed in the lobby with each

decorated for one of the two opponents in the big game - the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots.

They were encouraged to wear a sports jersey to school on the final day of the drive.

“It was important to support a local organization,” Ms. Boulukos said. “This is the time of the year when food pantries start to get a little low after the holidays.”

Massapequa High School recognized 14 student-athletes who will continue playing sports at the collegiate level during a national letter of intent signing ceremony on February 1st.

Eight members of the girls soccer team have committed to colleges.

Continuing their athletic pursuits are Hope Breslin (University of Illinois), Cassidy Byrns and Kyleigh Gallagher (SUNY Cortland), Brianna DeLuna

(Johnson and Wales University), Juliana Diesel (Bloomsburg University), Cristina Ferrara (Mercy College), Haley Murphy (Mount Saint Mary College) and Julia Ophals (SUNY Geneseo).

Other athletes recognized included Tyler Hutchinson (University at Albany, soccer), Alessandro Sambone (Adelphi University, soccer), Anthony Buckshaw (SUNY Maritime College, football), Chris Sollenne (LIU Post,

football), Maria Mercado (SUNY Cortland, track and field) and Caitlin O’Connor (College of Wooster, field hockey).

“This is one of my favorite days of the year,” said John Piropato, director of health, physical education, athletics and recreation. “It’s always a proud moment to recognize the dedication and achievement of our student athletes.”
