The winning designs will be displayed on the New York State Youth Art Month website and social media, with Mia’s piece serving as a representative for the work of all elementary school students in the state. It will also be included in the Youth Art Month Museum at the National Art Education Association’s annual national convention.

Prizes will be awarded in March, which is Youth Art Month. Mia will receive $100 worth of art supplies and East Lake will also receive new supplies for use in art classes. Ms. Krakoff additionally presented Mia, Lily, Maddie and Danny

Once again, East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District can boast the statewide winner at the elementary level in the New York State Youth Art Month flag design contest.

The contest is sponsored by the New York State Art Teachers Association.

Third grader Mia Reyes was selected as the winner for her piece based on this year’s theme, “Art Connects Us.” She was one of only four top finishers in the state – an overall winner and one each at the elementary, middle and high school level.

Her colorful drawing represents all of the state, from rural to urban, with the tall buildings of New York City designed to resemble crayons, markers and other art supplies.

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon.

Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon.

From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers.

In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you.

The BBCC’s premier program is titled Lend a Helping Hand (LAHH). Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for breast cancer patients currently in treatment, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Later on, the BBCC expanded the LAHH program to include Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological cancers.

From Jan. 25-29, Plainedge Public Schools celebrated Kindness Week, encouraging its students to think and talk about ways they can be kind to others.

Each day of the week marks a different spirit day, where both in-person and remote learners followed a theme.

Students were also given classroom challenges and activities to promote kindness.

Eastplain and John H. West elementary schools kicked off the week by reading the book of the month, “Giraffe Problems,” which celebrates the act of being kind. Students also took part in daily spirit days including “Kick Off to Kindness Day” where students dressed in red to display school spirit; “Score Points for Kindness Day” for students to

don their favorite sports jerseys; “Kindness is Hiding Everywhere Day” where students dressed in camouflage and “Patriotic for Kindness Day” for students to wear red, white and blue. Friday marked “Peace, Love, Hope and Kindness Day” for students to dress in tie-dye or wear accessories that matched the week’s messaging.

Seniors Earn Physical Education Leadership Award Massapequa High School seniors John Reece and Alexandra Stasichin were recognized as this year’s recipients of the Nassau Zone Outstanding Student Award, presented by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Two students – one male and one female – were selected from every high school who best exemplify their understanding of the New York State learning standards for health and physical education.

John and Alexandra were chosen for the award by Massapequa High School’s physical education teachers because they exhibit

physically active lifestyles, value healthy choices, demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior including good character, citizenship and sportsmanship, show leadership, are positive influences on their peers and value lifelong learning.

In addition to being active participants in their health and physical education classes, they also suit up as Massapequa Chiefs. John is on the baseball, basketball and volleyball teams. He and his volleyball teammates earned a Nassau County title in the fall 2019 season. Alexandra has earned All-County, AllConference, All-Long Island and All-State
