It also can be costly for homeowners whose homes are old to knock down walls. HomeAdvisor notes that the wall-removal process in old homes that contain lead paint or lathand-plaster walls is more intricate and may cost homeowners more money.

Students Bring Kindness To Seniors Students are spreading kindness beyond the walls of Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as they look to brighten the lives of others in their community. Third graders from Kimberly Kelly’s class visited the Parkview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Massapequa to present them with colorful seasonal artwork.

Throughout October, students in Ms. Kelly’s class worked together with their peers in several others classes at Birch Lane to create fall - and Halloween-themed artwork. The completed pieces were affixed to large white paper, and Ms. Kelly, Assistant Principal Joyce Larkin and several students visited Parkview afterschool to deliver the

murals. Students were able to meet many of the seniors who will get to enjoy their work.

Ms. Kelly said that it was a schoolwide project as students from kindergarten through fifth grade contributed.

“Kindness is contagious,” Ms. Kelly said, “and the best way to spread it is to see the joy it brings to other people.”

Toy Drives Yield Great Results Thanks to the efforts of students throughout the Massapequa School District, hundreds of children across Long Island will be receiving toys this year for the holidays.

On Dec. 17, students gathered up the toys, brought them to adviser Michael LaBella’s classroom and spent the afternoon wrapping as holiday music played in the background. The following day, they visited the Head Start program in Amityville to give the gifts to 75 preschool age children, with Mr. LaBella dressed as Santa.

“It’s good to spread joy

within the community to help underprivileged kids and give them something to be thankful for around the holidays,” said Key Club Vice President Juliet Weiss. She added that because of the generosity of Massapequa students and staff, the collection drive was a huge success and they would be able to give each child multiple toys.

Berner Middle School’s Builders Club raised about $450 selling candy cane grams, in which students could send a candy cane along with a happy holiday message to a friend. Adviser Noreen Millers said the money was used to buy toys, which were then donated to the John Theissen Children’s Foundation in Wantagh.

The organization provides gifts to underprivileged children as well as those in hospitals.

At Birch Lane Elementary School, fifth graders in John Coyne’s class also hosted a toy drive for John Theissen Children’s Foundation. The annual event generated more than 700 toys this year. Each day during the two-week drive, his student put on elf hats and collected donations from each classroom. Every students who contributed a toy received a holiday pencil and coloring sheet.

Mr. Coyne’s students said that the toy drive was important to them as a way of spreading kindness and making sure that every child has a great holiday.

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple.

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

The annual Massapequa fundraiser basketball game, featuring coaches, alumni and community members, will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4 from noon to 2 p.m. at Massapequa High School. This event is a collaboration between the Massapequa High School

boys varsity basketball team, basketball alumni, the Boys Booster Club and family and friends of the boys’ basketball program.

Donations will support the Lustgarten Foundation for pancreatic cancer research. Raffle prizes will include gift baskets,

Knicks, Nets and Rangers tickets, and items from local merchants.
