Local Artist Finds New Success

Kristen Hadjoglou, a local artist from Eastport, New York, truly offers something different to the marketplace. Her signature personalized hand-made coloring books are what really launched her career as an artist, but she has expanded to offer various other products as well.

“I was born an artist,” said Kristen. “I always knew that growing up. I attended Rhode Island School of Design, where I earned a Bachelors of Fine Art in Painting. From there, I worked in multiple industries where I was able to express myself creatively. Life surprisingly led me into obtaining a career as a Financial Advisor, which has been very fulfilling since helping others is something I’ve always been passionate about.” However, Hadjoglou never lost her passion for the arts.

As a long-time Eastport resident, she grew attached to many of the local businesses and what made the town so unique. “One day I drew a few pictures on a couple of pages as a gift for our local general store, and it quickly turned into an entire hand-drawn coloring book, which spotlighted the main destinations in the town. What started as a fun project

I worked on in my downtime turned into something that ended up being sold in local businesses and even on Amazon. People love to open up a physical book and see visuals that bring back special memories, and I love being a part of that.”

Since then, Kristen started her own company, Underdog Nation, where she sells her coloring books, stickers, clothing items, journals, puzzles and other fun gifts (such as crayons in the shape of people and stars)! With recent success, she is starting to focus more and more on her career as an artist. The best part is that Kristen can make something for any age group to enjoy.

“I recently finished a project with the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, which was a custom coloring book that’s filled with drawings of local businesses. It brought the Chamber Members together in a special way and is being sold around

Patchogue.” Another special project Kristen recently produced is a personalized coloring book that was used by a local fireman’s foundation for fundraising efforts.

“If you dream it, I can probably find a way to make something fun with it,” said Kristen.

“Whether it’s a single page or a full book, everything I draw is by hand in my personal style and reflects how much I care about the project. I’ve been inspired by all things local and historic, and it’s been fun to find a new way to teach kids in our community about local history. Some other projects I’ve worked on came from my love of my Gen X childhood, whether that be vintage toys, movie quotes, thrift shopping or collecting. Each project differs, but I absolutely love what I do, and that means I usually get things done pretty fast! I’m living that dream phrase, ‘If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.’ Looks like I’m almost there.”

Free Musical Performances At Local Libraries

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Distinguished Artists Concert Series will continue through May 2023 with free performances at local libraries throughout the Town.

“The Distinguished Artists Concert Series provides free musical and dance programs for the enjoyment of our residents,” said Councilman Labriola. “I encourage residents to take advantage of these wonderful performances offered by the Town for free at local libraries.”

Scheduled performances include: Echoes of Sinatra on Sunday, January 8, 2023 at 1:00 pm at the Syosset Public Library – Performing the music of Frank Sinatra. Registration is free and

Student Leaders See Impact Of Food Drive

Following a weeklong food drive in late November, members of the student council at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District got to see the impact they made with a trip to a local food pantry.

On Dec. 6, student council officers loaded 15 boxes of nonperishable goods onto a school bus, then took a journey to the Our Lady of Lourdes parish outreach center in Massapequa Park. During the weeklong food drive, Berner students and staff could drop off items when they came to school each day, with collection bins near the

entrances. Student council members promoted the food drive by making flyers, announcements and unloaded the bins each day so there was room for more donations.

Once they arrived at the church, the student council was met by a staff member who explained how the food pantry works and the importance of the donations for families in need. Students brought the boxes of food inside, checked expiration dates and sorted the items. Additionally, they helped organize donations from other people.

“It was a great

experience,” said Teresa Ferreira, the co-adviser of student council along with Denise Robertson.

“Students left the facility really feeling like they made a difference because they did. They were active and busy the whole time. The pantry was certainly ready to distribute food after they left.”

Ms. Ferreira added that after returning to Berner, student council members collectively wrote a letter to the outreach center to express their gratitude for the opportunity and also offering future assistance.

Winter 2023 Toddler Sports Program Online

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that the Toddler Sports Program will return this winter, beginning on January 31st. This 6-week program offers sports classes at the Hicksville Athletic Center for children ages 3 and 4.

“The Town’s Toddler Sports Program is a fantastic way to teach your toddler the fundamentals of sports in a fun and social environment,” said Councilwoman Maier. “This program is sure to be a hit with children and parents alike, as youngsters are given the opportunity to learn the basics of various different sports such as tee-ball, flag football and more along with children their own age.”

The Toddler Sports Program begins on January 31st and is 6 weeks in duration. Residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one, six-week session per child.

Classes will take place on: Tuesdays at 10am or 11am at the Hicksville Athletic Center in Hicksville; and Thursdays at 10am or 11am at the Hicksville Athletic Center in Hicksville.

Online Registration will begin on Tuesday, January 3rd at 9am through the Parks Department Portal available at oysterbaytown. com/parks. Residents must create an account on this website to register their child and upload proof of residency and the child’s birth certificate. Registration will close when the program

reaches full capacity. Space is limited- first come, first serve.

Each class is approximately 50 minutes. The cost of the program is $75 per child who is a Town resident, and $90 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. A guardian must be present during the class. The child MUST be 3 years old by the start of the program.

Assemblyman Durso Hosts Street Renaming To Honor Port Authority Police Officer James W. Kennelly

Assemblyman Michael Durso was joined by The Kennelly Family, members of the Port Authority Police Department, Massapequa Fire Department, and community representatives at a street renaming ceremony designating a portion of Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa as “Port Authority Police Officer James W. Kennelly Memorial Highway.” Police Officer Kennelly passed away in 2017, as the result of 9/11-related cancer he developed while responding to Ground Zero after the terrorist attack, with the Massapequa Fire Department, where he served as a volunteer firefighter.

“Recently, we had the privilege to honor the memory of my good friend, Port Authority Police Officer Jimmy Kennelly, who died from 9/11 related cancer, at a street renaming in Massapequa,”

said Assemblyman Michael Durso. “From this day forward, the stretch of roadway known as Old Sunrise Highway will be designated as Port Authority Police Officer James W. Kennelly Memorial Highway. Thank you to the Port Authority Police Department, Massapequa Fire Department, and Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino for helping make this event happen. And a sincere thank you to The Kennelly Family for their support.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino states, “We remember the life of Port Authority Police Officer James Kennelly, who succumbed to 9/11 cancer and illness developed as a result of working at Ground Zero as a volunteer with the Massapequa Fire Department. James gave his life to save and service his fellow Americans, and for that, we will pay tribute to his brave and selfless by renaming a stretch of

roadway in his name in Massapequa. James was a member of our Town

of Oyster Bay family and worked for our Department of Public Safety where he

exemplified an outstanding work ethic. We will forever miss him.”

We are winding down the year and entering the holiday season. This is a time of celebrating with family, remembering those we lost in the past year, and to thank all of those who helped us throughout the year. Families travel great distances this time of year to come together across all faiths, and it is such a great time. The children look forward to the winter break, presents, and mine loved seeing the lights on the houses that made our community even nicer. College Students are returning home from their campuses, and many a parent are happy to be together again after being away for them for the past few months.

Our local businesses have come together again to help decorate the community, with decorations on most of our major streets donated by our merchants, decorating their businesses, and of course our Tree and Menorahs in Massapequa and Massapequa Park. Both communities had very successful, and well attended ceremonies again this year, and it is so much fun seeing the children come out and perform and get a photo with Santa. I want to thank my fellow board and Chamber members for helping us have a successful 2022 as a Chamber. We have put in many new programs to help our local merchants and to improve our community. The local governments have also really come together to help us achieve our goals, with much support over the many years. The Street Fair and Tree Lighting couldn’t be done without the help and support of the Town of Oyster Bay and Nassau County, especially the Police Department and the Auxiliary Police.

Winter 2023 Toddler Arts And Crafts Program Online Registration Begins January 3rd

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announces that the Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts Program will return for Winter 2023, beginning on January 31, 2023. This 6-week program offers classes at the Town’s Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room and Hicksville Athletic Center, and is open to children ages 2 through 4.

“The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s development through nurturing their artistic expression,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Classes will certainly fill up quickly as this program offers children a great wintertime activity.”

The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is

6 weeks in duration, beginning January 31st, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on:

• Tuesdays at 10am for two-year olds and 11am for three-and-four-year olds at the Hicksville Athletic Center in Hicksville;

• Wednesdays at 10am

for two-year olds and 11am for three-and-fouryear olds at the Ice Skating Center Community Room in Bethpage; and

• Thursdays at 10am for two-year olds and 11am for three-and-four-year olds at the Ice Skating Center Community Room in Bethpage.

Registration will take place online at www. oysterbaytowncom/parks

starting Tuesday, January 3rd at 9am. Residents must create an account on this website to register their child and upload proof of residency and the child’s birth certificate.

Residents Invited To Submit Photos For Town Publications

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for future use in Town publications.

“Our residents recently received their 2022 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “We accept

photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website, social media pages and brochures.”

Councilwoman Johnson noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but high-quality photos may also be submitted.

Emailed photos should be sent to photos@oysterbayny.gov. Printed photos can be submitted to the

Town’s Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and brief description of the photo are included with their submission. The photographer is responsible for the correct spelling of the names and subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects they may appear in a Town publication.

The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. They have five service areas:

It’s the holiday season; a time to be jolly. A time particularly for children to be happy. On Wednesday, December 14th, EAC Network stepped up to support children in need on Long Island who otherwise would not have the possibility to celebrate this Holiday season like every child deserves to by hosting a Holiday Shopping Spree at Walmart in Farmingdale.

More than a hundred children and young adults, from 4 to 19 years old, were able to get a $100 gift card to spend on gifts of their choice. The event was organized in collaboration with Bethpage Federal Credit Union (BFCU) who donated $10,000 and Summit Health-CityMD, who donated $5,000.

Malik and Adrian, both 14 years old, were so grateful to be part of the shopping spree. With sparkles in their eyes as they explored the isles at Walmart and admired the different items on the shelves, their first stop was at the electronic game area, where they eagerly looked at different options available. The feeling of gratitude for the possibility to acquire a game or two, along with other items, was palpable.

Volunteers from Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Summit HealthCityMD spent the afternoon with each child to assist them as they purchased gifts.

After picking up a game, with excitement and humility Malik said, “I now have only one item in my cart, but I have what I was looking for and it feels good. It feels great.”

Sadly, the number of children in foster care is rising throughout the United States. These children are at a much higher risk of incarceration, teenage

pregnancy, substance abuse, lack of self-esteem and of ending up on public assistance. However, EAC Network’s Chance to Advance program works to bring meaningful change to the lives of at-risk children and youth in foster care by providing positive outlooks and enrichment opportunities through oneon-one mentoring as well as life skills workshops and activities, with the goal of assisting, caring and empowering children to take control of their lives.
