The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. This organization has five service areas: Children & Youth, Family & Community, Senior & Nutrition Services, Vocational Services & Behavioral Health and Criminal Justice Services. Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they assist over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County.

EAC Network runs the New Path Treatment Center, which is an outpatient clinic located in Hempstead. The center offers a recovery process in a safe and full-service treatment program for individuals with substance abuse disorders.

Approximately 22.7 million Americans need treatment for drug or alcohol-related problems, and many will not seek treatment due to the stigma and shame associated with substance use disorders. The New Path Treatment Center is a place where trained and compassionate counselors work tirelessly to assist people in need. They address not only substance use itself, but all of its contributing factors, including mental health, physical health, family systems, socialization, smoking cessation, legal issues and employment. A personal treatment plan is developed for each individual to address their specific needs.

is possible and is a life-long journey, we can help to reduce the stigma of substance use and mental health disorders. Our role at New Path is to assist individuals to achieve and maintain their recovery goals. Our services follow a recovery model whereby participants are encouraged to develop their intrinsic motivation to make healthy lifestyle choices.”

Massapequa Celebrates 25 College-Bound Athletes

More than two dozen student-athletes from Massapequa High School are set to continue their sports careers at the collegiate level next year. The athletic department hosted a National Letter of Intent signing ceremony on Nov. 9 for 25 seniors, who have committed to schools near and far.

From Nassau County to Chicago to Florida, the athletes will represent colleges and universities across the country. They were joined for their special day by their families and coaches, and received well wishes from Superintendent Dr. William Brennan, high school Principal Barbara Lowell and Director of Physical Education, Health, Athletics and Recreation Shannon McEntee.

“Your dedication and love for your sport has gotten you to this point,” Ms. McEntee told the

athletes. “This is a huge accomplishment and we are very proud of you.”

The committed athletes are:

Baseball – Jack Castillo (SUNY Plattsburgh), Eric Corey and Justin Notargiacomo (Utica University), Dylan Kelly (Mount St. Mary College), Erik Paulsen (Stony Brook University), Michael Vilardi (Queens College) and Tyler Young (University of Tampa).

Girls Lacrosse – Joely Caramelli (Syracuse University), Kate Ciarlo (Marist College), Jessica Giller (Jacksonville University), Mary Koster (Siena College), Ellie Leisen (St. John Fisher University), Emma Mastroberti and Ashley Melillo (SUNY Cortland) and Bridget Valentine (University of Massachusetts).

Ms. Lowell, a former

college athlete, said that their time in Massapequa has prepared them well for the next step, where the must dedicate time to both their sports and their courses. It will be hard work, but well worth it, she explained.

Dr. Brennan, a swimmer

in college, said that the combination of academics and athletics will create an amazing college experience for them. He recognized the parents for the significant role they played in support the athletic pursuits of their children.

Town And Marines Collect Over 30,000 Toys For Tots

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Tom Hand, Councilman Steve Labriola, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato and Assemblyman Michael Durso joined the United States Marines Corp. in hosting Long Island’s largest ‘Cruise-Thru’ Toys for Tots Collection Drive at John Burns Town Park in Massapequa on December 3rd and 4th. In total, the Town of Oyster Bay collected over 30,000 toys

for the less fortunate.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The 30,000 of toys collected at this ‘CruiseThru Holiday Toy Drive’ and by the Town of Oyster Bay will bring giant smiles to the faces of children this holiday season. I thank our residents for opening their hearts and wallets to generously give back to children in need during the holidays. This collection drive was the all-time largest single day collection on Long Island and demonstrated the love

our community has for others.”

Residents Cautioned Not To Fall Victim To Ongoing Phone Scams

Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Michele Johnson cautions residents to be on alert of potential telephone scams, particularly those soliciting any personal information or monetary contribution. These scams can be performed both by phone call or text message.

“Time and time again we hear about

scammers trying to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting residents, especially our senior citizens,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Many times, scammers pose as officials from the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration or other well-known agency, designed to intimidate

the call recipient. Now, during the holiday season, scammers have been known to ask for immediate payment via gift card, claiming that victims owe backpay in taxes or other debts.”

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible. The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water, so no flooding can occur. These are just a few ways homeowners can prepare for storm season. If you need to upgrade or replace any part of your home’s exterior call UNIFIED.

Spreading Kindness, Helping Others

The Students Against Destructive Decisions Club at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District was fundraising for a good cause in November. In honor of both Veterans Day and World Kindness Day,

SADD collected donations for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

The organization supports America’s heroes by providing mortgagefree homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families. Homes are custom

designed for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.

At Unqua, each person donating receives a kindness bracelet, serving as a reminder that one small act of kindness can change the world.

The Federal Trade Commission offers the following tips to residents who fall victim to scam phone calls:

Hang up the phone. Don’t press numbers to speak to alive operator or take your number off the list, this just confirms

your phone number.

Block any numbers from which you have received scam calls or texts.

Don’t trust your caller ID. Scammers use the internet to make calls all over the world.

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them.

Saladino And LaMarca Collect DVDs For US Troops And Children’s Hospitals

DVD COLLECTION DRIVE - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca celebrated the success of the Town’s DVD Collection Drive in partnership with the Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” organization. Thanks to residents’ overwhelming generosity, DVDs will now be sent to those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces, along with children in children’s hospitals. Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe will oversee their distribution and arrange movie nights this holiday season. Supervisor Saladino also honored the Big Hy for Heroes Organization. Founded in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman with the help of his son Arthur Strachman, Big Hy for Heroes has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs all around the world, and continues to do so today.
