The oldest branch of the U.S. military, the National Guard serves as a complementary force to active duty. Those in the National Guard are trained to be versatile, providing for humanitarian aid, domestic emergencies, combat missions, and homeland security operations. The Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, and Navy Reserve are the other branches made up of servicemen and servicewomen who primarily work civilian jobs but may be called to full-time military duty if necessary. The U.S. Armed Forces are headed by the President of the United States. The Secretary of the Department of Defense reports directly to the Commander-in-Chief. The DOD controls each military branch, except for the Coast Guard, which is overseen by the Department of Homeland Security. Learn more about the U.S. military at dod.defense.gov.

Dear Friends, As I am preparing this month’s newsletter, I am eagerly awaiting the change of the seasons, which has apparently just begun. With the Fall upon us, that means the beginning of holiday planning and more special events. That being said, it’s very exciting to be able to update you on what’s new at our Chamber. Our first Multi-Chamber Networking Event was held at the Bristal with great attendance and enthusiasm. Susan Martin, who chairs the Networking Committee, promises to bring us more opportunities to meet and mingle with our business colleagues and develop new relationships to help us grow our businesses. A special thank you to the Bristal at Massapequa for making their beautiful facility available to our membership, and especially Executive Director Jennifer Amarante for all of her assistance in organizing this great event. In addition, our Businessperson of the Year, Karen Gawrych, was recognized this Friday at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Our Board of Directors proudly joined with the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce to celebrate Karen’s many accomplishments - both

November’s Charity of the Month is:

The Book Fairies is an organization located in Freeport, NY. Six years ago, founder Amy Zaslansky heard about a classroom that had no books to offer to its students. Amy decided to start a book drive for used children’s books so she could hopefully be able to donate books to this classroom. By word of mouth and hard work, this drive took off and resulted in a final donation of about 3,500 books! Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501C3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material. Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help! Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have surpassed 1.4 million books collected!

Helping You Help Others

They function out of their main office in Freeport, but they also work with 40 different special needs sites that pickup book donations and bring them to their office. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers, who generously give of their time to help this charity! The Book Fairies receive help from about 1,500 volunteers each year!

Because of their book donations, many people have been able to experience the joy of reading. One local school that received many book donations through this organization in turn saw their school wide reading level increase 400%! If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. First time volunteers will go through a brief training for about 10-15 minutes and then they can continue to volunteer without addtional training as much as they would like. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations are always welcome! If you would like to donate books, you can do so at their Freeport location during those same sorting hours or you can drop off books at any time behind their office at their book-drop location. You can also visit one of their local book donation sites or arrange for your books to be picked up if you have five or more boxes of donations! Also, if you are interested in supporting their mission and donating financially, you can simply donate to their cause on their website at www.TheBookFairies.org/Donate. Lastly, The Book Fairies is in need of corporate sponsors. If your business or organization would like to become a sponsor, the opportunity is available! Please contact Rebecca Lakhani at Rebecca@TheBookFairies.org if you are interested in any of the above opportunities.

If you would like your organization to be featured in this column, e-mail Noelle@SouthBaysNeighbor.com!

NORTH MASSAPEQUA - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 7, 2018 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

When people ask me how I landed my first job in journalism, I often have to laugh and say, “I didn’t. I made my own job.” Or as I like to put it, “No one offered me a seat at the table. I had to get out some wood, a hammer and nails, and build my own chair.” It was the winter of 2005 and I happened to have a friend who was getting into the arena of online press release distribution. I inquired if he was planning to add any articles to the mix, and offered up my writing services free of charge. I hadn’t yet written professionally, but I knew a bit about writing and a bit about the entertainment industry. When I was asked to pitch the creative direction for an editorial (articles) portion of his newswire, I suggested interviewing celebrities and newsmakers. Since I wasn’t yet asking for any money, I got a half-hearted greenlight. “If you can make it happen, then you can run it,” I was told. The very first interview I

me for an interview. My first handful of interviews left me giddy with excitement in a rather childish way, mostly because I couldn’t believe that by simply declaring that I was going to become something, it actually began to happen. Before I knew it, I was interviewing talk show hosts, media personalities; a musician here, an actor there. The ball was starting to roll. After eight years and more than one hundred interviews that eventually rose to the level of Oscar winners, Emmy winners, Grammy winners and U.S. presidential candidates, I parted ways from this original position. For quite a while I felt certain that an opportunity like that would never come my way again. Time went by (five years to be exact), when I had an epiphany. Nobody had given me that initial opportunity. I created it, myself.

University. The session’s main focus was to teach studentartists how to prepare their portfolio’s for review. Students learned that an effective portfolio should showcase accomplished drawing skills, a diversity of media, some digital work if possible, and

include sketchbooks and original pieces. Each college counselor also gave a presentation that highlighted the programs and majors offered at their schools, which gave students a sampling of the different directions they can take their artistic pursuits after graduation.

scratch. In fact, it was my New Year’s resolution nearly one year ago. I didn’t know exactly how I would re-build these important relationships, get media outlets to come on board or get anyone to say yes to an interview, but I knew I was going to do it. Well, here we are, ten months later, and my portfolio of published and syndicated interviews is more substantial now than it was eight years ago before I ventured out on my own. My question for you to contemplate this week is this: Are you currently waiting for permission to do something you’ve always wanted to do? Is there something creative inside of you that wants to come out, but, “no one will give you the chance”? If a seat at the table is alluding you, it may be time to roll up your sleaves and build your own chair.

Continued From 6 the Chamber’s efforts to provide food and toys for the children and families of our community. Your support of this effort helps us to brighten their holiday season in a way that has such lasting impact. If you are interested in displaying a food or a toy box in your business, please call Shelley in the Chamber office at 516.541.1443 and she will arrange to have the donations picked up and dropped off at our local pantries. Our hope is to brighten the holidays for those in need. Speaking of our Chamber office, we are excited to announce that effective November 1st, we will be re-locating our office to 675 Broadway. The office space in a beautiful newly renovated

building will be a wonderful change for our Chamber. A special thanks to our new landlord, Sharmine Persaud - The Law Firm of Persaud and Zeltmann, who helped us to make this much needed move possible. In an effort to keep you apprised of other important business news, I want to remind you all that the state’s requirement related to the development of a company sexual harassment policy goes into effect shortly.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Councilman Thomas Hand recently joined with Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy and Massapequa Park Mayor Jeff Pravato

to congratulate the Massapequa High School baseball team on their 2018 New York State Class AA Championship victory, and present them with a commemorative sign on behalf of the Town.

Supervisor Saladino and Councilman Hand commended the players and coaching staff for their amazing talent and sportsmanship, and wished them well on their upcoming season.

RED RIBBON WEEK ESSAY - Viviana Bright, a third-grader at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, shared her Red Ribbon Week essay with her classmates. To mark the observance of the national drug awareness campaign from October 22-26, students in Danielle McCaffery’s class wrote about the importance of making healthy choices. They responded to the prompt, “Explain three reasons why you should not get wrapped up in drugs.” Photo courtesy of the Massapequa School District

Weather Enthusiasts Hit the Field The outdoors served as the classroom as young meteorologists at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus conducted a surface observation. On Oct. 16 and 17, students in meteorology classes went outside to observe weather conditions and take measurements. Led by science teacher Nicholas Donohue, students had to record information about the temperature, dew point, wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure, precipitation, visibility and cloud cover. They used instruments RECORDING THE WEATHER - Ames Campus science teacher Nicholas Donohue such as mercury-based led his students on a surface observation to record weather data. Photo courtesy of thermometers and the Massapequa School District barometric altimeters

to take measurements, along with their own observations. Students learned that they had to include data about their location such as the elevation, latitude and longitude before beginning. They also figured out how to overcome some obstacles, such as determining visibility in a place surrounded by homes and trees. After taking some measurements on the back field, students traveled to the flag pole to observe wind conditions. They used the flag to determine wind direction and figured out estimated wind speed by looking at objects that were

moving from the wind and comparing it to a Beaufort Scale. Students were able to look up live weather data from Republic Airport in Farmingdale, just a few miles away, to verify their own readings. Meteorology is a science elective offered for ninthgraders. Students followed up on their surface observations by returning to the classroom to analyze their data. Kind Words Kind words do not cost much. They never blister the tongue or lips. They make other people goodnatured. They also produce their own image on men’s souls, and a beautiful image it is.
