NMFD To Host The Annual Rag-A-Muffin Parade

The North Massapequa Fire Department (NMFD) will be hosting its Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade on Sunday, October 30th. The event will start at 12 noon at United Skates of America (1276 Hicksville Road), travel north on Hicksville, and conclude at the Hagedorn Little Village School adjacent to the North Massapequa Fire Department’s Station 2 on Hicksville Road. There will be no rain date. All children who participate must be registered to be eligible for

free prizes.

“The Rag-A-Muffin Parade is always special,” explained NMFD Chief Mark J. Frascella. “For nearly five decades we have hosted this outstanding event, which has brought tremendous joy to our community’s families, and especially our young people. Our department is extremely proud of this event and I know our residents are looking forward to enjoying many more years of the Rag-A-Muffin Parade.”

The event is always held just prior to Halloween,

which provides some extra atmosphere to an event already charged with excitement. “It’s a great day for the children,” Chief Frascella said. “Kids can wear costumes before Halloween to make sure they’re ready for trick-ortreating. After the costume parade they’re sure to be excited with the prospect of winning a bicycle or another great prize at the awards ceremony.”

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.

Helen Keller Services, located in Port Washington, recently held its 3rd annual National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) event, celebrating The US Department of Labor’s theme, “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation”, recognizing the vital role people with disabilities play in making the nation’s workforce diverse and inclusive.

“Accessibility to job opportunities affects everyone and should be integral to hiring practices, and not just an afterthought,” said Joseph Melillo, National Business & Employment Relations Specialist at Helen Keller Services. “With equal access, people who are blind, have low vision, or are DeafBlind can unlock their inner ability.”

Highlights of the event included a keynote address from Kathy West-Evans, Director of Business Relations, Council of State Administrators of Vocational Rehabilitation (CSAVR)/ National Employment Team (NET), and experts who spoke about disability inclusion, use of technology and the talents of the DeafBlind community in the workplace.

“The DeafBlind community is just like the rest of us; they simply communicate differently. And like the rest of us, they have unique gifts and talents to share that can

make our world a more diverse and vibrant place to work and live,” said Sue Ruzenski, CEO of Helen Keller Services.

Every year, Helen Keller Services spotlights companies that work with the DeafBlind community at its Access-Ability Awards, held in June.

“We recognize leaders who have made it their business to take action and advance accessibility within their companies or organizations and for the people they serve,” said Sue Ruzenski, CEO of Helen Keller Services. “We continue to make progress towards greater accessibility and inclusivity for and among the communities we work with, but there is still a great deal more of work to be done.”

Massapequa Student Named Long Island Scholar Artist

Annalise Taylor of the Massapequa UFSD, who is studying Production and Managerial Arts at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), has been named a Scholar Artist by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA). She is among only 20 students from across the Island to be honored with prestigious awards in the 2022-2023 ScholarArtist competition and to be profiled in Newsday.

“My experience at LIHSA has helped me to expand my artistic abilities in all aspects of technical theatre,” said

Annalise, who arrived at the school with cursory knowledge in costumes and sewing, and now has a considerable skill set to

draw on. She credits not only the education she received in the classroom, including the creation of life casts in makeup class, but also the invaluable practical experience she has gained, such as working on a puppet show for the Long Island Children’s Museum.

For Annalise, her instructors have served as more than just teachers, but also as mentors who

have helped her to prepare for college and careers. They have not only helped her to expand and refine her portfolio, but also to “make connections in the real world. They’ve introduced me to several different career paths that I would never have considered before.”

in costume design. She hopes to become a costume designer specializing in historical costumes, and to one day “own my own studio, creating costumes for theatre and film.”

To earn an award in the Scholar-Artists program, students must demonstrate the highest level of artistic excellence, as well as outstanding academic achievement

(a grade point average of 90 or above). Candidates are evaluated based on performances, a portfolio of their work and a written essay about how the arts have enriched their lives. Winners are chosen by a committee of arts educators and other professionals, with the final selection being made by a separate steering committee.

Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Sought

Breast cancer survivors can help others coping with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The four-day training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays in November (November 1, 8, 15 and 22) from 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. Attendance at all four sessions is necessary.

This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

Those who complete the training will have opportunities to provide support and guidance on the hotline; attend community outreach events to support underserved communities;

deliver educational presentations and speaking engagements; assist with local and national press and media; and help with fundraising efforts.

Registration Opening For Youth Girls & Adult Learn-To-Play Ice Hockey Clinics

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola announced that registration for Session 2 of the Youth Girls and Adult Learn to Play Ice Hockey Clinics are opening at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. Online registration runs to October 28th at oysterbaytown.com/ parks and in-person on October 29th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Ice Skating Center.

“These fun and instructional clinics available to girls ages 10U and up to 18U, as well as adults, run for 10 weeks at the Town’s Ice Skating Center at Bethpage Community Park,” said Councilman Labriola. “The Town is also inviting those interested in

coaching for the Town’s Ice Hockey Program to contact the rink as we have openings available for ice hockey coaches.”

Residents interested in joining session 2 of these programs are welcome to sign up online through October 28th or in-person on October 29th. All Girls clinics, including 10U, 12/14U and 16/18U run for 10 weeks. The Adult Learn to Play Clinic also runs 10 weeks. The cost of the program is $150. Registrants should bring a copy of their birth certificate and proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (tax or utility bill) as well as payment.

“The Town’s Youth Ice Hockey program provides youngsters a great opportunity to improve their skating

and hockey skills in this great program that has earned recognition by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality,” said Councilman Labriola. “We’ve had great success in both our new Girls Hockey Program and Adult learnto-play sessions. Our Ice Hockey Program is among the best around, with a dedicated coaching staff ready to teach this sport to the many boys and girls enrolled in our program.”

More than two dozen young scientists from Massapequa High School took their curiosity about the world into the natural world, as they traveled to the Massapequa Preserve on Sept. 30 for experiments and data collection.

Students from the Advanced Placement Environmental Science class, as well as the science research program from the main and Ames campuses, observed the stream that passes through their community and discovered the aquatic and wildlife that calls the preserve its home.

The Environmental Science class, under the direction of teacher Thomas Dempsey, once again took part in the “A Day in the Life” river study program, sponsored by the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission. Massapequa High School students have been collecting data at the stream for about 15 years, giving

Science Students Connect With Nature

them a wealth of data to make comparisons about changes to water quality and organisms living them.

Environmental science students measured stream speed and direction, recorded weather conditions, noted tree and plant life, did biological sampling of fish and invertebrates and conducted chemical testing of the water. They made observations on site and also took water samples back to the school for further analysis.

When they weren’t studying the stream, students could join science teacher Stacy Lopez for a bird-watching expedition and identify the avian animals that live in the preserve. They used binoculars and spotting scopes to find different birds.

The outdoor education program expanded this year to include students in science research program in grades 9-12. Through a partnership with the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s

DNA Learning Center, students assessed the biodiversity of the stream by analyzing DNA of different organisms they found. They worked with Dr. Cris Fernandez, an educator from the DNA Learning Center.

Several science research students also collected dirt and gravel samples for their study of microplastics in Long Island river water, a project being conducted through Brookhaven National Laboratory’s SPARK program.

Daniel Mezzafonte, Massapequa’s supervisor of science for grades 6-12, said that the students were given a great chance to explore the environmental health of a natural ecosystem right in their backyard, while also working with expert scientists. With data collection on site and follow-up analysis in the classroom, students gain experience as both field scientists and molecular scientists, he explained.
