AUTISM WALK RAISES OVER $4,000 FOR AUTISM AWARENESS - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Councilman Tom Hand recently joined with colleagues in local government, Assemblyman Michael Durso and County Legislator James Kennedy to support the Town’s 13th Annual Walk for Autism held at John J. Burns Town Park. This walk has helped increase awareness for autism and supports those on the spectrum, and this year, more than $4,300 was raised to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities, a dedicated facility that offers families comprehensive assessments, family support and updated information on autism research while also building awareness. Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

This non-profit is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. The theme is a call to action and in their opinion, it’s long overdue.

Massapequa’s High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department, in conjunction with its Child Study course and Children in Families college course, will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents.

The preschool will begin around Jan. 4, 2022, with an approximate end date of June 2. Two sessions are being offered, both on Tuesdays and Thursdays, either a morning session (9:10-11:10 a.m.) or an afternoon session (12:15 1:30 p.m.). Children must attend both days of the session chosen.

The high school students who will operate the preschool, under the supervision of

Massapequa High School Child Study Directory Anna Fierro-Gregg, are either new students enrolled in Parenting and Child Development or are previous Child Study students now taking the college-level course.

“The high school students will plan, prepare and implement interdisciplinary activities within a thematic unit for the preschool students,” Ms. Fierro-Gregg said.

To be eligible, children must be between the ages of 3 (as of Jan. 6, 2022) and 5, not attending kindergarten and toilet trained. Enrollment in the popular program is limited to a maximum of 18 children per session and selection will be by lottery

drawing with Massapequa residents and previous students receiving priority.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with local and police officials to encourage residents to support the ‘Back the Blue’ ribbon campaign in recognition of Police Appreciation Week, a national recognition celebration in honor of men and women in blue.

Typically held in May but rescheduled due to pandemic restrictions, National Police Week honors law enforcement officers who service to protect the safety of our communities, as well as those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The Supervisor was joined by Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou

Imbroto, Councilman Tom Hand, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca, Assemblyman Michael Durso, 1st Vice President of the Superior Officers Association Edward J. Perkins and President of the Detectives Association John Wighaus.

“The Town’s Blue Ribbon campaign encourages residents to show their support for men and women in blue by decorating their homes, businesses, storefronts or trees with blue ribbon,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“We believe this message is especially as important as many of the Nassau County Police Department and NYPD officers living in our neighborhoods continue to face anti-

police sentiment and, even crazier, calls to defund the police.”

“It’s thanks to these men and women that we have the quality of life that we do. When you dial 911 to safeguard your family, protect your home or during a health emergency, it’s our police officers who are there to help,” added Councilwoman Johnson.

“It’s thanks to them that we live in the safest large suburban county to America.”

Curran Announces New Mental Health Service for Veterans Curran Also Announces Veteran Picnic to Engage Younger Vets

In ongoing support of Suicide Prevention Month, and as military and Veterans suicides continue to rise at an alarming rate (25% in 2020), County Executive Curran was joined with local Veterans and the Veterans Services Agency (VSA) to announce a new support system for Nassau’s Veterans.

Nassau’s VSA will soon be equipped with in-house social workers, specializing in assisting veterans with crisis counseling, substance abuse and other mental health related issues. The County aims to have the services available six days a week (Monday through Saturday) at no cost to local veterans.

“Our Veterans Service Agency does a fantastic job supporting the brave men and women who have served our country and the acquisition of specialized crisis counselors will only expand on what they offer to our Veterans. So many people were affected by mental health issues the past year, and our Veterans are no exception. We are proud

to soon be able to offer the specialized help that they need to get them through tough times,” said County Executive Curran.

“Veterans experience unique behavioral and mental health issues and often need unique support to conquer them. With the new crisis counselor service, we will be able to provide the help our Vets need. County Executive Curran has once again fought to do the right thing for Nassau’s Vets and we thank her for her ongoing support,” said Ralph Esposito, Director of Nassau County Veterans Service Agency.

The service will be free for all Veterans but will target Afghanistan and Iraq Veterans, who are 2.5x more likely to die by suicide. The crisis counselors will be licensed social workers specializing in veterans / military distress and will offer in person crisis intervention services, care coordination support and linkage to peer support services.

These crisis counselors will be

trained to support veterans combatting mental illnesses, suicidal thoughts, substance use disorder and emotional distress. The program is being developed by the Mental Health Association of Nassau County and will be supported

by American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding.

Curran also announced a Veterans picnic, open to Veterans and their families, on October 23 from 11am to 2pm at Eisenhower Park.

The event will have free food and entertainment as well as an array of support services available to Veterans in Nassau County.

County Executive Curran also reminded the public of existing VSA programs, such as the Vet2Vet program.

Vet2Vet is a nationally modeled program that aims to reduce Veteran Suicide and substance abuse through peer support.
