Massapequa School District Bond Vote Schedule For Oct. 17

Voting for the proposed Massapequa School District bond is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Oct. 17, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Massapequa High School and Fairfield, Lockhart and McKenna elementary schools. With a total not to exceed $82.2 million, the proposed bond is being presented to the community as three propositions, and includes upgrades to all nine school buildings, as well as renovations to the Hawthorn property. It was developed following an extensive review of district facilities, recommendations from the district’s architect and feedback from the district’s Buildings and Grounds and Budget and Finance committees.

Proposition No. 1 focuses on upgrades to core infrastructure districtwide, including security upgrades, roof replacements, exterior door replacements,

boiler replacements and HVAC upgrades, as well as enhancements to the district’s softball field at Berner Middle School, including the installation of synthetic turf, and new elementary playgrounds. Projects included in Proposition No. 1 are estimated to cost $46.49 million and will qualify for 54.4% reimbursement through NYSED Building Aid.

Proposition No. 2, which is contingent upon the successful passage of Proposition No. 1, would allow the district to enter into an energy performance contract. This EPC would result in a number of energy efficiency projects, including the replacement of more than 11,700 current interior lighting fixtures with LED lights and adding solar power with an estimated 3.7 megawatts of roof-mounted photovoltaic

Town Clerk LaMarca Announces

electric generation. The total cost of Proposition No. 2 is not to exceed $24 million and carries no additional impact on the tax levy, as it is funded through the energy savings, rebates and NYSED Building Aid.

Proposition No. 3, not to exceed $11.79 million, focuses exclusively on preserving district assets by upgrading the Hawthorn School. Projects at Hawthorn include replacements to the roof, fire alarm system and exterior doors, as well as parking lot and related site work improvements and additional interior upgrades. If approved by voters, it is anticipated the district will enter into a lease agreement with Nassau BOCES.

For more information on the bond and to review the bond video and newsletter, please visit the district’s website at www.msd.k12. ny.us.

Receiver Pravato Mails 2023-2024 School Tax Bills

Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes, Jeffrey Pravato, reminds residents that the First Half of the 2023-2024 School Tax Levy was due on October 1st, but can be paid without penalty through November 13th. The Town of Oyster Bay is closed on November 10th in observance of Veteran’s Day.

“New York State Law allows my office to provide

taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Receiver Pravato explained. “After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty is added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to October 1st. Don’t delay, make your payment before November 13th and ensure you

$6,495!

aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.”

The Tax Office is open in both Town Hall North, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, and Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, daily from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm to assist residents and accept payments with a check, cash or credit card (for a fee). Outdoor walkup windows are also available. On November 9th and 13th both offices will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill.

Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. Please be certain to sign your check, and make it payable to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s school district code, section, block, lot

and phone number on the check. All mailed payments must have a United States Postal Service postmark dated on or before November 13th.

Taxpayers also have access to the 2023-2024 School Tax information on our online system via a link on the Town website, www.oysterbaytown. com. Residents may view current tax bills, print out a hard copy, or pay taxes with an ACH check payment for a service fee of $1.75, or by credit card for a much higher fee charged by the credit card companies. The Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of this fee.

Receiver Pravato reminds residents that school budgets are set by their local school districts, and the Town of Oyster Bay is not involved in that process. Any questions related to School Tax rates and amounts should be addressed to the

resident’s school district. The telephone number for each school district is printed on the front of the School Tax bill.

When calling the Tax Office at (516) 624-6400, or sending an email to receiveroftaxes@

oysterbay-ny.gov, residents are requested to have the school district code, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) Awarded The Prestigious Drug-Free Communities Grant

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) has recently been awarded a five-year Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grant from the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The DFC Support Program provides grants to community coalitions to strengthen the community by creating and sustaining ways to reduce local youth and adult substance use. MTAC was awarded the first five years of funding in 2018. After competing for another five-year cycle, MTAC secured the grant and will receive a total of ten consecutive years of award to support the work of the coalition. This will allow for continued success and cooperation among community members working to create a healthy and safe environment for

our children. About MTAC: Operating under YES Community Counseling Center, MTAC partners with multiple sectors of the community: Government and school officials, parents, youth, community leaders, religious/fraternal and civic/ volunteer organizations, healthcare and businesses professionals, law enforcement, media, substance abuse and youthserving organizations, and more to help educate the community on the dangers of underage drinking and substance use. The opioid crisis is affecting our community, state, and country. About DFC Support Program: The Drug-Free Communities (DFC)

Support Program, created in 1997, is the nation’s leading effort to mobilize communities to prevent youth substance use. It helps fund communitybased coalitions that engage multiple sectors of the community to prevent youth substance use. Recognizing that local problems need local solutions, DFC-funded coalitions engage multiple sectors of the community and employ a variety of environmental strategies to address local substance use problems.

The DFC Support Program provides grants up to $125,000 per year for five years to community coalitions to strengthen the infrastructure among local partners to create and sustain a reduction in local youth substance use. After five years, community coalitions may re-compete for another five-year cycle.

I remember the day 3 years ago when I saw on one of the school pages on Facebook that my son, JT’s 3rd grade teacher passed away. He had her 3 years prior to her passing from breast cancer. A rush of memories came flooding back. When he had her I was a fulltime working Mom and I wasn’t as involved with the school community so my contact with her was limited; but at the same time I had enough to realize instantly the world had lost a beautiful soul. I sat him down and told him the news; his eyes began to fill with tears. He just adored her. Plus, when we had left off with her she was youthful, in her early 50s, and the picture of health - with the world’s best smile! As a matter of fact, the picture used for her obituary was her with that amazing smile in a field of sunflowers, it was so fitting.

This news also came as quite a shock to him; to all of us. We had no idea she was even ill. JT wanted to pay his respects to her but this was when they were still enforcing COVID protocol at

The Eternal Sunflower

funeral homes; I figured 2 less people in attendance could only help with what was sure to be crowds turning out. It was decided between myself and a few mom’s from his year’s class that the children would stand outside the church of her Funeral Mass for a few minutes in quiet observance just to show respect to her casket while it was being escorted in. Being pulled out of 2 Middle school classes that morning was a small price to have my son do something in the way of ritualistic mourning and also hopefully bring the family some comfort of seeing she mattered to her students, of all ages, through the years.

In earlier times, Mrs. Scanio dismissed the children daily out of the exit closest to their wing of the school. That’s when I would sometimes see her. Since I wasn’t there every day like some of the Moms, whenever I was there she would be sure to have a brief exchange with me personally. She was always very friendly, always very encouraging when speaking about JT’s academic progress and very open with

the feedback about his qualities as a person. In between, and in addition to these exchanges, she would always take time to write notes to JT including one personal handwritten card. JT’s younger brother Ryan has Autism. When JT was in 3rd grade, Ryan was in 1st in a different school in our district. Some of Ryan’s first years of schooling were what I can now in retrospect describe as “the eye of the storm” as far as Ryan’s Autism behaviors were concerned. When I first met Mrs. Scanio at one of the first orientations in September I did what I always did with teachers of JT. I introduced myself as the hot mess Mom of her class; and then I came right out and asked for her to look out for him. JT is a very smart boyhe learned typically; but I needed to always be assured he’d be up and running and able to learn independently. I never anticipated any problems in his academics but I can honestly admit I was hanging on by a thread with Ryan; anything further added to my plate at that time surely would’ve put me over the edge. Not only did Mrs. Scanio, like other teachers, keep her eye on any potential learning breeches with JT, she went one step further and regularly praised him and made him feel special.

One of the things I decided for JT early on, before he could even really decide for himself, was that he should spread awareness and promote inclusion for children like his brother. For Autism awareness day in his school he brought to school an age appropriate book on Autism and read it to his class; Mrs. Scanio was so happy and encouraged

him to go to the other third grade classrooms and read to them. She wrote him that earliermentioned personal note thanking him for spreading awareness of Autism to children who may not have known much about it. This was a turning point; receiving that positive feedback and being told he was knowledgeable on a subject not many of his peers knew about - it relayed the message that only someone as special as him could do this. It puffed him up and he wore this new role like it was a badge of honor; he started carving out what he now years later still considers his special duty as a sibling of a child with special needs; someone who looks out for the interests of all children with disabilities and learning challenges.

I tried planting these advocacy seeds for JT on my own while the whole time I struggled with the mom guilt on whether it would be yet another “in-the-interest-ofRyan” tactic that might threaten to infringe on JT’s individuality. Mrs. Scanio’s encouragement and support helped JT see he wanted it to bloom in himself and I can honestly say that it has translated into all areas of how our family regularly has worked towards acceptance of Ryan’s challenges as a family unit. My children have a beautiful unconditional relationship with each other and it doesn’t always work out as happening that way in families like ours.

JT is now 15 years old and 6 feet tall; he is working his first job at Summer camp held at the very school he attended when Mrs. Scanio was his teacher. I misunderstood his start date this year so I

confused him and he went to report the day before it started; when he arrived no one else was there; he called me and chastised me “Mom it doesn’t start until tomorrow!!!” So quick update on me: I’m still that hot mess Mom! Anyway, when I got home later that day from work I thought he was going to yell at me but instead he said “Mom did you know there are sunflowers painted on the building outside of the exit where Mrs. Scanio used to let us out? I spent a few minutes there today.” At the mention of her name we always both get solemn and reflective. I didn’t think it was my place to ask him what thoughts went through his mind or what words he might’ve said while he “spent time” in the presence of the beautiful sunflower tribute in her honor but I can share what mine were when I went back to see it for myself. Thank you for helping a little boy know his worth and feel special during a time in his life it was not guaranteed his mother always made him feel it. You will never know the impact your small series of kindnesses had on our lives at a very difficult time; Sunflower,

may you rest in peace.

O’Henry wrote a story called “The Last Leaf.” I won’t spoil-alert it here even though it was released some 120 years ago; but it speaks of a man-made permanent symbol that represents eternal hope. Something that when you see it, it tells you to “hold on.” I know there are many remembrances of Mrs. Scanio in our town; she was proeducation so naturally there are scholarships, breast cancer donation fundraising drives in the schools, that all bear her name, rightfully so; but the most fitting has to be those sunflowers painted on brick outside the exit she used to release her kids daily; it is modest and simple and beautiful, everything she was.

*240,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer a year in the United States. 42,000 women die from breast cancer each year. Most of them were not famous or well-known outside of their little communities but they had a wonderful influence on their communities; their loss will leave voids and they will always be missed.

Agent To Massapequa’s Middle Schoolers: Character Matters

“You represent you” was the message from noted sports agent Mark Leinweaver as he spoke to students at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District on Oct. 4. He addressed sixth, seventh and eighth graders about the importance of good character.

During a trio of assemblies, Mr. Leinweaver outlined for students the potential negative

consequences of bad choices on social media. He gave specific examples of students whose future plans were derailed by damaging posts and comments. He also emphasized ways that students can make a positive difference in their school and community through “core of character” actions. Getting involved in clubs, volunteering with a local service organization and showing school spirit

were among the examples he shared, ideas that came from an earlier conversation with Berner’s student council representatives. One good deed a day is all it takes to make a difference, he added.

Mr. Leinweaver said that students have many different interests and should support each other, such as athletes attending school concerts and plays. The professional players

he works with often take advantage of cultural arts experiences on their days off.

While he represents about 75 athletes, he noted that every student in the room is also an agent – for themselves. It is up to them to make good choices, be honest and be accountable. He reminded students that they are holding the pen for their life stories, and they also have the power to

make positive changes.

“How do you want to write the rest of you?” he asked.

Dean of Students

Kristen Meoli said that Mr. Leinweaver’s presentation supports the school’s Character Matters initiative. His relatability to students and real-life examples sent a strong message that she expects will resonate with them.

“It was really important

to bring in powerful speaker to go over the same character values that we instill here at Berner Middle School,” Ms. Meoli said. “He has the presence where the students listen and tune into him. We will continue to carry out our shared message kindness, courage and being an upstander.”
