Dominican Village’s Fall Frenzy Auction

Plans are well underway for Dominican Village’s annual Fall Frenzy Auction (formerly known as the Chinese Auction Extravaganza).

There will be countless raffle baskets with separate raffles for “gold prizes” including flat-screen TVs, designer handbags/wallets, lottery trees, gift cards, and more. The event will

also include a wine grab raffle.

Register early for the dinner auction to be held Friday, November 4th from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. located on the grounds of Dominican Village in the Helen Butler Hall. The general public is invited to view and submit raffle chances on Thursday, November 3rd, and on the same day of the main

event, from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Helen Butler Hall. Winners need not be present.

It takes several months for a group of exceptional volunteers to coordinate, wrap, and record the many baskets for raffles, so we are asking our friends and supporters for the following new items large baskets, children’s bikes,

It requires taking an active role in a child’s growth and development. Parents are key in helping their teens build resilience, feel safe and develop healthy routines.

Our Active Parenting evidence-based program offers new ways to help families survive and thrive in our changing world. Active Parenting is a sixweek program to help you to enhance the skills you already have, and/ or incorporate new skills as your children move through the different developmental times in their lives.

A pair of Massapequa High School seniors have been honored in the 2022-2023 Scholar-Artist competition, a collaboration among Long Island school arts administrators, the Long Island Arts Alliance, Newsday and the New York Community Bank Foundation.

Annalise Taylor was selected as a scholar-artist in theater and Tara Villalba was named a merit award winner in media arts. These awards are highly selective as only 20 scholar-artists and 20 merit award winners were chosen from the pool of applicants from across Long Island.

Scholar-artist applicants are nominated by a high school teacher and represent the highest level of artistic excellence. Students must also demonstrate superior academic achievement with an unweighted grade point average of 90 or above to be considered, and submit an essay and a portfolio of artwork or performance.

Annalise and Tara will be featured in Newsday in 2023 and will also be honored at an award ceremony in the spring.

Breast Cancer Survivors

Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

By seventh grade, children likely have a cell phone, are familiar with social media and know the ins and outs of all of their devices. That’s why there is a need to keep them safe when using these digital tools, and retired Nassau County police officer Sharon Galvin visited Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District for cyber safety presentation on Sept. 22. During an assembly for

the entire seventh grade, Officer Galvin spoke to students about responsible use of the internet and social media, including ways to protect their privacy. She also discussed the consequences of cyberbullying, and explained that bystanders can be just as guilty as those doing the bullying.

Students had follow-up discussions about these topics in their health classes, and one of

Officer Galvin’s key points resonated with them: Think before you act. Ryan Knapp said that presentation will make him think carefully about the way he conducts himself online.

His classmate, Sophia Morgan, added that the information is relevant to all students because just about everyone uses some kind of social media by seventh grade.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

October is a month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways.

October 14 is World Sight Day, which focuses on public awareness of blindness and vision impairment as major international public health issues to influence funding for national blindness prevention and to educate about blindness prevention.

October 15 is White Cane Day, established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to raise awareness of people who carry a white cane, to help motorists identify and yield to people using one and to create legal penalties for not doing so.

Additionally, the entire month of October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities, past and present, and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.

Taken together, a common goal of these intersecting events is to raise the level of appreciation for people who do not have full use of their sight, yet overcome daily challenges to live and be treated equally alongside their sighted brothers and sisters.

Helen Keller Services (HKS) is a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation. RETURN OF FOODIE WEEK - Town officials announce the return of Foodie Week at Butera’s of Woodbury, including Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Supervisor Joseph Saladino, and Butera’s of Woodbury owners Laurie and Martin Butera.

Consistent with wellknown New York City standards for similar restaurant promotions, a Long Island Food Critic panel will curate all participating restaurants and will evaluate them based on the same set of criteria to help ensure that restaurants are of a similar caliber. While there is no charge for dining establishments located in the Town of Oyster Bay to participate, restaurateurs must apply online at www. FoodieWeek.com. Supervisor Saladino also announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will continue its efforts in helping the restaurant industry get back on its feet by expanding outdoor dining through 2023. This expanded outdoor dining initiative will greatly assist the food service industry at a time in which they need it the most. A recent study indicated that 51 percent of adults have said they are not dining out at restaurants as often as they would like, an increase of six percentage points from before the pandemic.

“We have worked tirelessly since this pandemic began to help location businesses come back safely and efficiently,”

Supervisor Saladino said.

“We cut the red tape, permitted for new outdoor options for restaurant patrons and helped restaurant owners reopen safely and successfully. We are pleased to continue with that effort, and will invite restaurants to extend their outdoor dining services through 2021. This way, restaurant owners will be able to use all of the investments they made this year on outside tents, heaters and covers into and throughout next year.”

Councilwoman Maier added, “We hope our residents will join us in supporting our local restaurants this October 16th through 23rd for Foodie Week. Diners will have a chance to sample the best of the best, without the pressure of purchasing a full three course option or other type of old-fashioned Restaurant Week-style promotion. Foodie Week changes that paradigm by celebrating exceptional handcrafted dishes – from

farm to table, dock to dish, and grape to glass offerings.

NMFD To Host The Annual Rag-A-Muffin Parade

The North Massapequa Fire Department (NMFD) will be hosting its Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade on Sunday, October 30th The event will start at 12 noon at United Skates of America (1276 Hicksville Road), travel north on Hicksville, and conclude at the Hagedorn Little Village School adjacent

to the North Massapequa Fire Department’s Station 2 on Hicksville Road. There will be no rain date. All children who participate must be registered to be eligible for free prizes.

“The Rag-A-Muffin Parade is always special,” explained NMFD Chief Mark J. Frascella. “For nearly five decades

we have hosted this outstanding event, which has brought tremendous joy to our community’s families, and especially our young people. Our department is extremely proud of this event and I know our residents are looking forward to enjoying many more years of the Rag-A-Muffin Parade.”

The event is always held just prior to Halloween, which provides some extra atmosphere to an event already charged with excitement. “It’s a great day for the children,” Chief Frascella said. “Kids can wear costumes before Halloween to make sure they’re ready for trickor-treating. After the costume parade they’re

sure to be excited with the prospect of winning a bicycle or another great prize at the awards ceremony.”

Senator Brooks Provides Funding Award To Help Address Alcoholism And Drug Dependence Among Long Island’s Youth

Senator John E. Brooks (SD-8) was proud to present a funding grant of $10,000 to the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) to support their Student Assistance Program (SAP).

Since its founding in 1956, LICADD has striven to provide healthier communities that are resilient and responsive to the addictive climate we face today. Providing clinical assessments, solution-focused counseling, treatment placements, psycho-educational support groups, family services, recovery management services, eating disorders support, anger management, and grief and loss support, the organization has become a go-to agency for providing intervention, education, and professional guidance for substance abuse and mental health services — especially against the backdrops of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic and substance use crisis.

One such service provided by LICADD is their Student Assistance Program (SAP). The mission of SAP is to provide evidenced-based substance use prevention education to school-based professionals, students, parents and the community so they can develop healthy coping skills to begin to

recover from mental health and substance use disorders (SUD). SAP services include Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), access to treatment on demand, support services for family members of individuals with a SUD, evidenced-based substance use prevention education and workforce development for schoolbased professionals.

Reflecting on the positive effects that LICADD has had on his District, Senator Brooks remarked, “The impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our community is evidenced in the documented increase in anxiety, stress, grief and loss — known precursors to substance use among individuals and families in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICADD’s Student Assistance Program, providing at-risk individuals and families with healthy coping strategies required to recover from mental health and other SUD’s, can ensure that all students, educators, and school staff receive high-quality, personalized programming. I was proud to award this funding grant to an organization so dedicated towards bringing such impactful and innovative programs for Long Island’s at-risk youth.”

Town Unveils New Synthetic Turf At Field Of

joined local athletes on the newly upgraded athletic fields at Field of Dreams in Massapequa. The Town of Oyster Bay recently completed the replacement of two synthetic turf fields, including the east soccer/lacrosse/football field and the practice field. These replacements

only improve the playing surfaces for young athletes, but also the overall safety for players.

“Synthetic fields improve the look of our community, help alleviate the high costs associated with maintaining grass fields, and increase play time for athletes as weather has limited impact on the fields,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We are so pleased to welcome back our local athletes to enjoy this beautiful new facility and take full advantage of the updated fields.”

Synthetic turf fields generally have an approximate useful life of 8-10 years, depending on use, and are less expensive than the longterm cost of maintaining natural grass and a dirt surface. Synthetic fields also provide the potential for fewer cancellations of games due to inclement weather, as the field is able to absorb rain storms in a manner that is not possible on a dirt infield.
