For 9/11, Massapequa Students Get First-Hand Accounts Of History

The bravery, heroism and kindness that emerged in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 were the focal point of social studies lessons throughout the Massapequa School District as the nation marked the 22nd anniversary.

Jason Gelardi, the curriculum associate for social studies, said that because today’s students were born several years after 9/11, it is important for them to understand an event that still impacts the world around them. Teachers showed videos and provided firsthand accounts of their experiences.

“It’s a rare moment in

history when a teacher gets to teach something they lived through,” Mr. Gelardi said.

Massapequa High School social studies teacher James Koester talked about working near the World Trade Center when it was first attacked in 1993, as well as his experience as a Massapequa teacher in 2001. He explained the atmosphere in the building when students and staff started to learn what happen, and also focused on the many ways that people helped in the hours, days and weeks after.

“It’s history to them, but it’s current events to us,” he said. “I want my students to understand the heroism

that overshadowed the evil.”

Janine Moretti was also teaching social studies at Massapequa High School in 2001. Because cell phones weren’t as prevalent back then, she recalled how many classroom televisions were tuned to the news.

“We were learning as it happened,” Ms. Moretti said. In addition to sharing her story, she showed her 10th grade history students “Boatlift,” a documentary about the boat captains who went to Manhattan to help people evacuate the island.

David Summers explained to his 11th grade U.S. history students that all historically important moments have a series of causes. He discussed the

events that led up to 9/11, beginning with the World Trade Center bombing in 1993 and the formations of terrorist networks abroad.

In Michael Lisa’s 10th grade world history class, students visited the website of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. They watched videos and listened to audio recordings of survivors and first responders who shared first-hand accounts.

Ninth graders in Tara Camillieri’s class at the Ames Campus took part in the 9/11 Memorial and Museum’s Remember the Sky initiative. Invoking the clear blue skies over the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, people across the world are encouraged

to take and post to social media photos of the sky on the anniversary. The purpose is to show that all people are united under one sky.

After some morning rain cleared, Ms. Camillieri’s students went outside and took pictures of the sky on their phones, then returned to the classroom to create mock Instagram posts.

At Berner Middle School, seventh graders in Kristen Steck’s classes watched “Man in Red Bandana” about Welles Crowther, who sacrificed his life to help others escape from the Twin Towers. Students then discussed the characteristics of good leaders.

Seventh grade coteachers Kimberly Simpson and Susan Einhart led a lesson on empathy and sympathy. In watching a video about 9/11, students wrote down words, phrases and quotes that stood out to them on paper shoeprints. Because they were born 10 years after terrorist attacks, they learned to “walk in someone else’s shoes” and try to understand how others felt who experienced the day.

Labriola, Walsh Kick Off Plainedge Football Season

LABRIOLA, WALSH KICK OFF PLAINEDGE FOOTBALL SEASON - Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh kicked off football season with Plainedge Football players and cheerleaders. A Great Eight: Massapequa Musicians Earn All-State Honors

The Massapequa School District is pleased to announce that eight students have been recognized by the New York State School Music Association as All-State musicians.

Five Massapequa High

School students were selected to NYSSMA honors ensembles for the winter conference, which will be held from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 in Rochester. An additional three students were named alternates.

Seniors Cooper Arbisi

and Jayden Pearl, both tenors, with perform with the Mixed Chorus. The Symphonic Band will welcome senior Teresa Greene, who plays the oboe, and senior Luke Raymond, who will be in the flute section. Junior

Austin Benedict was chosen to play the trumpet in the symphony orchestra. This is the second straight year that Cooper, Teresa and Jayden have received All-State music honors.

Alternates for the 2023

Town Partners With Community Group To

Collect Peanut Butter Residents Invited To ‘Spread The Love’ To Help Stock

Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announce that the Town will partner with the Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club to host a Peanut Butter Collection Drive. Residents are invited to donate new, unopened and sealed peanut butter to help replenish local food pantries and support families in need. Drop-off containers are located at Town Halls North and South, as well as at the Town Ice Skating Center. Alternative butters, including sun butters, almond butters and cookie butters, as well as jelly, are also accepted.

“We are proud to partner with this great organization to help ‘spread the love’ and stock local food pantry

shelves with this very popular product,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“Peanut butter has a long shelf life, provides many nutrients and doesn’t require refrigeration, making it among the most highly requested items from local food banks. We thank the Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club for again putting our local communities first with another wonderful initiative to help others.”

The Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club mission is to provide and encourage involvement in education, charitable and social programs for the men of local communities, and to support the local and wider community with activities and contributions.

Town Seeks Volunteers To Assist In Shell Recycling At Oyster Festival

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invite residents looking to help the environment and preserve our waterways to take part in the Town’s shell recycling initiative at the upcoming Oyster Festival, taking place Saturday and Sunday, October 14th and 15th in Oyster Bay.

“We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to be a vital part of our environmental mission to help protect our harbor and improve our waterways,” explained Supervisor Saladino.

“As a Shell Collection Station Attendant, volunteers will contribute their time to help divert oyster and clam shells from landfills, which will instead be recycled and used for habitat restoration and growing new oysters.”

Volunteers at this year’s festival will be asked to commit

to working in three-hour shifts. Available time slots will be from 10am through 7pm on both Saturday, October 14th and Sunday, October 15th. Responsibilities will include identifying oyster and clam shells, overseeing a shell collection station with separate bins for general trash and for shells, guiding festival goers in correctly sorting their waste, and answering questions about the shell recycling program and educating attendees about its environmental benefits. Those interested in participating will be asked to participate in a zoom session to become familiar with the program and will receive a t-shirt, as well as community service hours for their participation.

“This wonderful initiative helps us restore the populations in our harbor while improving water

quality,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “After the festival, the shells are transported by Town aqua-culturists to a curing facility, where they remain for several months prior to being strategically returned to the harbor to assist in the growth of new shellfish. This great program not only helps ensure the shells don’t go to waste, they provide an excellent source of habitat for young shellfish to grow and mature, offering protection from weather conditions and predators.”
