Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town will offer a Toddler Arts & Crafts Program throughout the months of October, November, and December.

This 8-week program will be held at the Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center and Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room, and is open to children ages 2 through 4. Registration

begins September 18th, from 9 am to 3 pm, at the Town’s Parks Department Recreation Office in Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Rd, in Massapequa.

“The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts program has proven to be an extremely popular one here in the Town, as it is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s development through nurturing their artistic expression,” Supervisor Saladino said.

Attention Children 12 & Under

choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on Tuesdays at the Hicksville Athletic Center at 10 am (two year olds only) and 11 am (three and four year olds) beginning on Tuesday, October 8th.

Classes will also take place on Wednesdays at the Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room at 10 am (two year olds only), 11 am (three and four year olds), or 1:30 pm (three and four year olds) beginning Wednesday, October 8th. “I urge those who wish for their toddler to participate to come down and register beginning Wednesday, September 18, as this 8-week program fills quickly on a first come first serve basis” Each class is about 30 minutes to an hour long.

The cost of the program is $25 per child who is a Town resident, and $30 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. Danielle Cheiffo from Massapequa, a Teacher Aide at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, was honored recently by the Nassau BOCES Board for her role in the school’s outstanding student performance at the 2019 New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships.

Considerable effort goes into preparing students for the annual SkillsUSA competition. As an advisor, Ms. Cheiffo not only

worked with her students on their full roster of academic assignments, but also coached them through the intensive training required to earn the privilege of competing in SkillsUSA. The competition is part of SkillsUSA’s mission to provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry leaders working together

to prepare high school and college students to become leaders in the business world.

The program helps establish industry standards for jobskill training and instills a respect for community service in its participants.

The U.S. Department of Labor recognizes SkillsUSA as a “successful model of an employer-driven youth development program.”

Celebrating 25 Years This year marks the 25 year anniversary for American Black Belt Academy, located at 4875 Merrick Road in Massapequa. Started in 1994 by Tom and Lorraine LoVarco as a small modest Karate school located in Massapequa Park it has grown today to be one of the largest most diverse schools in the country.

“We started in a small 900 square foot location were I taught all the classes and my wife Lorraine was the office manager,” says Tom LoVarco. Our enrollment began to grow quickly and our students were competing in National tournaments and doing very well. The school started to be recognized for producing top rated

competitors.

Changing locations several times in the same area the size of the school is nearly 10 times larger than when it opened. And since opening, the facility has expanded into offering not only high quality American Kenpo classes for kids and adults but now offers a full fitness program, Kids BJJ and MMA, Kickboxing and a Martial Arts After School Program with transportation from all the schools in the Massapequa School District. A full day Martial Arts camp is even available during the summer. They also host two large Karate tournaments each year.

Now joined by their children Chris and Danielle along with an amazing

staff of instructors and assistants the school is very organized and extremely professional. The location has 3 large classrooms that gives the ability to offer over 80 classes each week.

Allowing for convenient class times and the detailed separation of ages and experience level. The story doesn’t end here. Plans for the future of American Black Belt are still in the making. Always looking for ways to improve services and to have a more positive impact on the lives of everyone that walks through their door.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced the Town will host it’s Free Family-Fun Waterfront Festival and Marine Expo on Saturday, September 14th from 12pm – 4pm at TOBAY Beach Marina (with a September 15th rain date). The ceremony marked the 40th anniversary of when Police Officer Russell was murdered.

It included a street sign unveiling at the corner of North Utica Avenue and North Broadway in North Massapequa. The sign, which now reads “NYPD Police Officer Michael Russell Way” is situated near the North Utica Avenue home where Police Officer Russell and his family resided. Police Officer Russell made countless friends, was a devoted husband and father who loved the NYPD and enjoyed playing sports.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, the Town Board and New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner James O’Neil conducted a ceremonial street renaming dedication in honor of fallen NYPD Police Officer Michael Russell, who died on August 2, 1979, in the line of duty, while attempting to arrest an armed assailant who had just shot and killed a civilian.

An Amazing Journey McKenna Elementary School Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry told students that the secret to their success was working together, and encouraged them to enter middle school with that same spirit of teamwork.

East Lake Elementary School Assistant Principal Mary Velte did a little math, noting that it was 2,221 days from kindergarten orientation to the fifth grade moving up ceremony. She said that herself, Principal Thomas McKillop and the entire faculty and staff were so proud of their accomplishments during that time.

Lockhart Elementary School student Alex Bartolo noted the “amazing journey” he and his classmates have been on for the last six years, making hundreds of memories. They will now carry their long-lasting friendships to Berner.

Iconis noted that the backdrop on each stage included six banners, one for each elementary school, connected by a curved blue line to symbolize the

schools coming together to form one graduating class.

She asked the students to thank their teachers and family members who have supported them.

After six years in elementary school, 518 now former fifth graders from the Massapequa School District are ready for the next step. Berner Middle School awaits the students, who were celebrated for their achievements at elementary moving up ceremonies.

From learning to read, write, add and subtract in kindergarten, to completing research projects and engineering challenges as fifth graders, the students have grown by leaps and bounds during their elementary years.

Principals recognized that remarkable growth in their speeches and also highlighted the exemplary character of this group of students, who comprise Massapequa High School’s graduating Class of 2026.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation.

This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island.

The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College.

Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

The Social Brain would like to thank all who came out to the Basket Night Fundraiser on Friday, August 16th. They raised $2,600 and received another $900 in corporate donations! Additionally, they just wrapped up their East End 4-Week Social Skills Sessions. These were successful and helped children and young adults from Patchogue to as far east as Sag Harbor. They completed fun projects and encouraged a team approach to complete each week’s classes. They would like to give a special thanks to Peconic Speech Services of Riverhead for collaborating with their organization to host these classes. Keep your eye out for another set of classes coming during this upcoming school year.

Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 35th anniversary of teaching. A mother of grown twins, she wanted to create a unique school where preschoolers receive the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefit from her professional background and the “world class” training she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where

only mothers teach the very youngest children.

A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov.
