Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town officials welcomed members of the Championship 12U Massapequa International Little League Softball Team as they returned home from the Little League World Series! A celebratory community parade is being planned to celebrate the girls in this historic achievement, as they are New York’s first softball team to be named World Series champions.

Town Awards $600,000 For Local Chambers Of Commerce & Business Associations

Farmingdale, Massapequa Chambers First To Each Receive $50,000 Grants; All Chambers Invited To Apply

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board recently announced more than a half million dollars in grant funding to help support local Chambers of Commerce and Business Associations that were negatively impacted by the COVID pandemic. The funding, which will be distributed to up to 12 chambers of commerce and business associations through the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce, is being provided through the American Rescue Plan Act and at no cost to Town taxpayers. The Farmingdale and Massapequa Chambers of Commerce were the first to receive the funding from the Town.

“We recognize the crucial role that local Chambers of Commerce

and Business Associations play in supporting small businesses, fostering commerce and establishing connections with potential customers. Unfortunately, so many of these organizations were significantly impacted by the COVID pandemic, leading to financial hardships,” said Supervisor Saladino. “As part of the Town’s commitment to supporting our local communities and aiding in the economic recovery of our Town, we are pleased to offer this grant opportunity.”

Grant funding will be administered by the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce to chambers and business associations in the Town of Oyster Bay. Entities are eligible to receive up to $50,000, which can be used

for a variety of purposes, including operations and maintenance expenses and community investments. Additionally, individual businesses and non-profits who have not yet applied for the Town’s $5,000 ‘Oyster Bay Forward’ grant program can still receive funding. The program is available to businesses that employ up to 50 full-time equivalent W-2 employees as well as sole proprietors. Loved Ones Lost To Overdoses

In recognition of National Overdose Awareness Day, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board will partner with Drug Free Long Island, along with the Village of Massapequa Park and Thomas’s Hope Foundation, to host an Overdose Awareness Memorial Service on Thursday, August 31st at 6:30pm at Brady Park in Massapequa Park. Resource tables will be available for families from 6:30pm – 8pm, and a 7:15pm memorial service will be held in memory of those who have lost friends

and family to overdose. Following the memorial service, a candlelight vigil walk will take place from Brady Park to Village Square.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “It is so important that we gather to raise awareness of the deadly effects of heroin and remember our loved ones who lost their lives to the opioid epidemic. Residents are invited to bring a photo of their loved one to the ceremony.”

Drug Free Long Island will supply a large dreamcatcher in which residents can place a picture of a loved one lost and/or

The Massapequa International Little League Softball Team Wins Big

The Massapequa International Little League Softball Team had a historic win in Greenville, North Carolina on August 13th, becoming the rst ever New York team to win at the Little League Softball World Series. This has been a long time coming and a dream that became a reality for the team who went undefeated throughout the tournament with 19 wins and 0 losses.

Their hard work and dedication are what led them to victory, along with their tight knit community amongst the team. “We trained like a professional team,” said Team Manager Rich Eaton. “We worked out ve days a week, two hours a day….they are the ones who want to practice, not the coaches forcing them to practice. That’s what makes this group so special.”

This is not only the rst time a New York team has a won in the World Series, but the rst time this team even made it to the tournament. Their 5-2 win is nothing short of historic.

It’s safe to say that the community is proud of the girls and have supported them along the way. Despite not being able to be at every game physically, community members gathered together for watch parties, supporting them from afar. They were cheered on excitedly as they arrived at a Homecoming Celebration at Brady Park on August 14th.

The celebration for these young victors is just getting started, with a local parade still to come on August 25th! Congrats, team!

Receiver Pravato Advises Late General Taxpayers Of Last Chance

To assist property owners who missed the August 10th deadline for paying their 2023 General taxes, Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that they can still pay the bill August 31st with the State mandated 2% late payment penalty while avoiding additional interest and fees from accruing on their property.

Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at (516) 624-6400 if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after August 31st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West

Street, Mineola, New York 11501.

In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver Pravato advises homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at (516) 571-2090 to determine the amount due. They may also

visit the Nassau County Treasurer’s Office at 1 West Street in Mineola.

Receiver Pravato noted, “Taxpayers in the Town of Oyster Bay are already paying some of the highest property taxes in the nation, and I want to make sure that our residents do not pay more out of pocket than they have to.”

A Free Forum For Breast Cancer Survivors

“Surviving Breast Cancer: Empower yourself with nutrition and a healthy lifestyle” is a free forum to be held on Friday, September 22 from 12 noon to 1 pm on zoom.

Dr. Heather Zinkin, a radiation oncologist at Northwell Health in Huntington, will provide important information to empower patients to take hold of their health. Topics to be discussed include health screenings, prevention, vaccines, and more.

Dr. Heather Zinkin has a special interest in integrative medicine, patient wellness and

nutrition. She attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She graduated from NYU School of Medicine and performed her medical internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She completed a residency in radiation oncology at a combined program at Tufts and Brown University and served as chief resident. She then returned to her hometown where she has been practicing for the past 15 years and was appointed Chief of Radiation Medicine at Huntington Hospital. She has given many survivorship lectures both

in hospital and community settings including active participation in the Northwell Wellness Center. She has also served on various physician panels for community education and holds certificates in Nutrition from Cornell University.

Over A Dozen Restaurants Now Recycling Shells – More Urged To Join Environmental Efforts

Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that the Town’s shell recycling program, which is completing its inaugural year, has been a tremendous success through partnerships with local restaurants and food vendors. To date, over a dozen local restaurants participate in the program, and more are welcome to join.

“Through is innovative program, the Town seeks partnerships with local restaurants and other entities to collect oyster and clam shells from dinner plates and kitchen preparation tables,” explained Supervisor Saladino. “Town aquaculturists regularly pickup shells from local partners and deliver them to an environmental curing facility. In just our first year, we’ve collected more than 20,000 pounds of oyster and clam shells, diverted that waste from landfills, and saved restaurants in their carting expenses. Once ready for deposit into waterways, the shells

are strategically placed at the bottom of local Oyster Bay and Cold Spring harbors, helping to strengthen our local marine environment.”

Shellfish are essential mollusks in the local marine environment as they filter water through their feeding mechanisms. A single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of seawater per day, making shellfish Mother Nature’s most valuable marine cleansers. Studies indicate that by expanding shellfish populations in local harbors we can improve water quality for generations to come. While this program helps the environment, it also helps restauranteurs toward achieving compliance requirements with the New York State Food Donation and Scraps Recycling Law while also reducing waste carting expenses.

Councilwoman Vicki Walsh added, “The Town’s Shell Recycling partner program brings the entire community together to help restore shellfish populations in Oyster

Bay and Cold Spring Harbors by providing habitat for shellfish and other marine species, improve water quality, and restoring local food

supply. It’s a win-win for the community and our environment and we invite more restaurants to join us today.”
