8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk

The John Brower, Jr. Foundation, in partnership with Outreach, will host the 8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Parking Field 1 (check-in begins at 9:00 a.m.).

The Walk was established by the Brower family (parents John, Sr. and Jody, and their children Kristen and Robert) in 2014 after they tragically lost their son John, Jr. to an opioid overdose in 2014. The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the opioid epidemic and the suppport needed to fight the problem that continues to devastate families and communities throughout Long Island. All funds raised support Outreach’s life-saving treatment programs and services for individuals and families.

The Walk along the historic Jones Beach Boardwalk serves as an

ongoing tribute to the memory of John Brower, Jr. and others who have been lost to the ongoing opioid crisis. The Walk offers information to inspire and educate the public about substance and alcohol use disorders and the treatment options available to them and their loved ones. an AA- rating, from its A+ rating, and Moody’s Investors Service upgraded the Town’s outlook from ‘stable’ to ‘positive’ while maintaining its A1 rating. Standard & Poor’s Global Rating lauded ‘the town’s robust operating performance,’ and a substantially improved financial position as well as ‘improved financial management practices.’ Moody’s Investors Service remarked that ‘the turnaround has been both rapid and dramatic.’ These upgrades illustrate the enormous financial improvements made by the Saladino administration since taking office in 2017, when the Town held a junk bond rating from Wall Street.

“Independent Wall Street agencies continue to award the Town of Oyster Bay with upgrades for our commitment to watching the bottom line and protecting your wallet,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Despite inheriting a junk bond rating from the prior administration, our success and financial turnaround is topping Wall Street’s charts due to our commitment to restricting spending, paying down debt and sound financial management practices. This eighth Wall Street credit rating upgrade will save residents real money as the Town will pay significantly less money in interest expenses when bonding for road repaving, park improvements and other critical infrastructure work.”

This scholarship was for their work in the Massapequa High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) club to prevent youth substance use in the Massapequas. Tara and

Victoria were nominated by SADD club advisor Nicole Bendetti. Massapequa Takes Action Coalition also recognized the graduates for helping youth navigate healthy decisions in the Massapequas. The Elks scholarship and MTAC Recognition Award are given annually to outstanding SADD Club leaders who go above and beyond to prevent youth drug use and destructive

decision making.

Jazz Greats Honored At Pinelawn

Special Tribute Celebrates Legendary Jazz Musicians Laid To Rest At Pinelawn

John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lloyd Trotman, and Guy Lombardo were honored on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum during a special musical tribute celebrating the legendary jazz greats laid to rest on the property.

Guests attended the free event which was the first tribute Pinelawn has ever organized to honor the legendary jazz musicians. The noted Silver Arrow Band, which has performed around the world and with award winning musical artists including Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Herbie Hancock & Quincy Jones will perform for guests, under the stars, in Pinelawn’s Louis Natalie Mall, home to many Pinelawn events.

“A very special evening was planned where, for

the first time, we honored the extraordinary jazz musicians who are resting peacefully at Pinelawn. Each musician has significantly contributed to the history of jazz and 20th century music and we were honored and humbled to share this history with the community,” said Justin Locke, President, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum.

About the Jazz Musicians

John Coltrane was a 20th century iconic American jazz saxophonist, bandleader, composer and musical giant. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz. John Coltrane died on July 17, 1967 at Huntington Hospital, Huntington, Long Island.

Count Basie, born

William James Basie, was an American jazz musician and American institution that personified the grandeur and excellence of jazz. Count Basie is considered one of the greatest bandleaders of all time. He was the arbiter of big-band swing, establishing swing as a lasting music style. The legendary Count Basie Orchestra still performs today. In 1924, Count Basie moved to New York City. Count Basie died on April 26, 1984.

Lloyd Trotman was known as the “sideman to the stars,” an American jazz bassist who performed alongside noted jazz, R&B, Dixieland and rock artists including Duke Ellington, Ben E. King and the Platters. He resided in Huntington, Long Island between 1962 and 2007. Lloyd Trotman died on October 3, 2007.

Guy Lombardo, born Gaetano Alberto Lombardo, was a Canadian and American Big Band leader known for his festive approach to New Year’s Eve through his famous recording of Auld Lang Syne. He performed with the Royal Canadians charting yearly hits.

Guy Lombardo lived in Freeport, Long Island on South Grove Street, later renamed “Guy Lombardo Way.” Guy Lombardo died on November 5, 1977.

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum is known for its exceptionally beautiful, park-like grounds, unique architectural monuments, flowing bronze fountains and world-class, 500acre Level II Arboretum. Massapequa BOE Adopts Bond Resolution

Community Referendum Scheduled For Oct. 17

During the July 6 Massapequa School District Board of Education meeting, the board adopted a resolution to present a three-part bond proposition to its community for consideration.

Developed through feedback from the district’s Buildings and Grounds and Budget and Finance committees, the proposed bond will be presented as three propositions totaling $82.2 million.

Proposition No. 1 will focus on upgrades to core infrastructure districtwide, including security upgrades, roof replacements, exterior door replacements, boiler replacements and HVAC upgrades, as well as enhancements to the district’s softball field at Berner Middle School, including the installation

of synthetic turf, and new elementary playgrounds. Projects included in Proposition No. 1 are estimated to cost $46.49 million and will qualify for 54.4% reimbursement through NYSED Building Aid.

Proposition No. 2, which is contingent upon the successful passage of Proposition No. 1, would allow the district to enter into an energy performance contract. This EPC would result in a number of energy efficiency projects, including the replacement of more than 11,700 current interior lighting fixtures with LED lights and adding solar power with an estimated 3.7 megawatts of roof-mounted photovoltaics electric generation. Total of Proposition No. 2 is not to exceed $24 million and carries no additional

impact on the tax levy, as it is funded through the energy savings and NYSED Building Aid.

Proposition No. 3, not to exceed $11.79 million, focuses exclusively on preserving district assets by upgrading the Hawthorn School. Projects at Hawthorn include replacements to the roof, fire alarm system, exterior doors, as well as parking lot and related site work improvements and additional interior upgrades. If approved by voters, it is anticipated the district will enter into a lease agreement with Nassau BOCES.

Voting will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 17, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Massapequa High School and Fairfield, Lockhart and McKenna Elementary schools.

Unstructured Fun Is Hallmark Of Massapequa Teen Center

Socialization is the primary focus of the Massapequa School District’s Teen Center, a summer recreation program for students entering sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The five-week program is held at the high school’s Ames Campus.

Director Anthony

Messina explained that the program’s open campus concept is different from elementary summer recreation, in which students are assigned to groups and have scheduled times for each activity. At the Teen Center, participants are able to visit the different stations at their own leisure. Mr. Messina explained that this helps the campers get to know each other better, as they will likely cross paths with everyone else at least once a day.

There are arts and crafts, game and movie rooms

and sports in the two gymnasiums and outside on the athletic fields. While one group might be playing basketball in the gym, another group may be in the corner making lanyard bracelets. Everyone comes together while doing the activities they most enjoy.

All of the stations are overseen by college-age assistants, and most are Massapequa High School graduates. The Teen Center is open for six hours a day and includes special events such as pizza Friday, a dunk tank, Tropical Smoothie day and the blue and gold Olympics with field daystyle competitions. There are also field trips.

Mr. Messina said that it is great to see students from three different grade levels bonding and having fun together, and those friendships continue into the year at Berner Middle School.

“I love all of the friendships and all of the bonds that I’ve created here,” said rising eighth grader Ellason Moore. When she reaches high school, she hopes to become a counselor for the elementary summer recreation program.

“I like how there’s a lot of new people I haven’t met before,” added eighth grader Kourtney Griffin.

“I get to make friends in all three grades. And the counselors are very nice and easy to talk to.”

Megan Kirtyan, a Class of 2022 graduate, is working her first summer at the Teen Center and said the experience will benefit her as she aspires to become a physical education teacher.

“I enjoy that all of the kids are great to work with,” she said. “They’re so enthusiastic. There are so many opportunities for them here.”

Megan said that the

most popular activities among the campers include card games, making bracelets and playing basketball. The camp averages

about 100 participants per week, and many have been coming for the past three years. Nate Kaufman, who is entering eighth grade, said a lot of his friends

come to the camp, so it is a good way to spend time with them over summer vacation. His favorite activities are basketball, kickball and ping pong.

Since cutting property taxes in 2018, the subsequent five budgets – in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 – sustained the $1.3 million property tax cut through a plan that successfully froze taxes. As a result, $7.8 million is in the pockets of taxpayers rather than the coffers of government. Total Town debt has also declined, from a high of $763 million to $576 million at the beginning of 2022, bringing the administration’s five-year cumulative debt reduction to a grand total of $187 million – a 25% decline in debt.

Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park) recently hosted his 2nd Annual free veterans’ pancake breakfast and resource fair honoring area veterans and active military members for their service and sacrifice.

Along with a free breakfast, the event brought together numerous government agencies and local organizations that offer support and services to the veteran community including Nassau County Vet Center, Wounded Warrior Project, Long Island State Veterans Home, New York State Parks and Recreation, Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency, New York State Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Vets to Vollies, VetDogs, and so many more.
