Painting, Performance And Much More At Massapequa Arts Camp
It may be summer vacation but a walk through Massapequa High School suggests otherwise. That’s because the Summer Fine Arts Camp is in full force, a five-week program offered in partnership with Nassau BOCES that features dozens of classes in visual art, music and theater.
Children as young as first grade to rising seniors are enrolled in classes that are taught by certified teachers, with support from high school and college assistants. Jessica Wyman, coordinator of the program, said that more than 330 students are enrolled in at least one
camp, with many signing up for multiple weeks.
In music, there are beginner and intermediate level band and orchestra classes, along with acoustic guitar, ukulele, songwriting and sound recording technology camps. New music classes included Ukulele Jam Band
and Irish Music on the Tin Whistle.
Eleni Diakoumakis, who is entering seventh grade, is attending the intermediate band class to get better on the trumpet, an instrument she has been playing for three years. She has enjoyed learning songs from different movies this summer, which has helped her increase her range.
“It’s a good way to spend my summer and I can practice my instrument so I’m not rusty for the school year,” she said.
Tim Hassell, a rising seventh grader, was recently given a guitar from his grandfather, so he is taking acoustic guitar. After each class, he goes home and practices what he learned.
“It’s a good way to learn the guitar,” he said. “You learn all of the chords, notes and how to strum.” He may be learning the guitar in the summer, but the song he most enjoyed
playing in class was “Jingle Bells.”
Ms. Wyman said there are 38 student assistants, who are working at least one camp this summer. They support the teachers by working one-on-one with students to reinforce the lessons and also help set up and clean up.
Noah Weber, a rising junior, is working in the Decorative Arts and Collage classes. It is his first year as a student assistant and said he developed a passion for the visual arts from his classes in school.
“I love working with the kids and helping them discover new interests within the art fields,” he said. “It’s very rewarding to see the kids grow as artists throughout the week.”
Senior Phoebe Elliott is working her third summer camp, and this year is assisting in Draw, Paint and Explore, More Draw, Paint and Explore, and 3D Sculpture classes.
“It gets very messy,” she said, “but that’s the fun.”
Phoebe added that because the courses are open to students from a wide range of grades, it is interesting to see their varying skill levels as well as the different creative processes.
In the Fiber Arts class, students created several projects under the direction of teacher Antoinette Kearney. They sewed and decorated custom tote bags and made tapestry weavings, among other projects. Ms. Kearney said the goal of the class is to give students a new experience in working with different materials and techniques.
“It’s very hands on and very experimental,” she said. “It’s different projects they normally wouldn’t have in their art classroom.”
Each camp ends with a performance or art show for families.

It seems like yesterday that we were throwing confetti, tooting horns, and saying goodbye to 2022. Today, we are just about halfway done with 2023. That means…it’s time for a midyear review.
I do love this time of the year. It’s a great opportunity to evaluate my progress both in business and my personal life. A midyear review is not just a list of tasks accomplished or goals to reach; it’s a chance to look at the path we are on in our businesses and personal lives and make changes while we still can.

2023 Sandcastle Contest To Be Held At Hither Hills State Park

The contest will be held each Thursday through August 31, 2023. Sand sculptors may use sand, water, and any other natural materials native to the beach.

Massapequa Student Anna Izquierdo Awarded Davis Scholarship To Attend UWC-USA
Anna Izquierdo, a student from Massapequa High School, has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious Davis Scholarship to attend UWC-USA in Montezuma, New Mexico. Anna is among the students chosen for this meritbased scholarship, which recognizes her outstanding achievements and commitment to promoting peace and sustainability.
UWC-USA is an international high school that brings together
students aged 16 to 19 from diverse backgrounds to foster unity and create a peaceful world. Anna’s passion for other cultures and her curiosity about the world drew her to UWC. She is excited about the opportunity to meet and learn from people her age from around the globe, gaining new perspectives and immersing herself in different cultures.
Anna has been actively involved in promoting sustainability in her daily life by making ecoconscious choices such as walking to school and work, avoiding fast fashion, and following a vegan lifestyle. She believes in the importance of individual actions for a more sustainable future.
In addition to her commitment to sustainability, Anna has dedicated her time to
community service. She regularly volunteers with the Book Fairies, a nonprofit organization that distributes books to underserved schools and communities. Through her volunteering experience, she has witnessed the dedication of teachers and the impact they have on their students’ education.
Academically, Anna has excelled in her favorite subjects, English and history. Her passion for these subjects has driven her to explore literature and delve into the stories of historical figures. She values the importance of learning from the past and understanding different perspectives.
As a member of her school’s varsity tennis team, Anna learned the value of teamwork and collaboration. Playing doubles tennis taught
her patience, acceptance of imperfection, and the joy of relying on and supporting her partner.
Anna’s past creative writing teacher, Ms. Junjulas, has been a significant inspiration. Ms. Junjulas encourages creativity, embracing mistakes, and being open to new ideas, aligning with
the UWC mission.
In the future, Anna plans to pursue a college degree in environmental science, driven by her passion for sustainability and making a positive impact on the environment.

Preservation Long Island Celebrates Its 75th Anniversary With Special Events And Programs Through December 2023
Preservation Long Island is delighted to announce its 75th year in operation as the only regional not-for-profit organization dedicated to historic preservation on geographic Long Island. From events and exhibitions to preservation advocacy and on-site student education, their wide-ranging programs connect Long Islanders to the region’s diverse and distinctive past.
To help celebrate this 75th Anniversary milestone, special events are planned including, a new exhibition, and redesigned house tours and special programs at Preservation Long Island’s historic properties across Long Island.
Originally founded in 1948 as the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, the
organization adopted Preservation Long Island as a new name in 2017 to communicate more plainly its commitment to advancing the importance of preserving all facets of the region’s history through advocacy, education, and stewardship of historic sites and collections.
Preservation Long Island’s approach to historic preservation on Long island is comprehensive and includes:
• Interpreting three Preservation Long Island owned historic sites in Suffolk County.
• Providing free advisory services in communities across Long Island for individuals and groups engaged in local preservation efforts. Advocacy work includes the Endangered Historic
Places Program and Preservation Awards.
• Maintaining exceptional examples of regional material culture.
Preservation Long Island’s collections of over 8,000 objects and archival materials is considered one of the most significant regional assemblages of decorative arts and objects in New York State. Hundreds of images from the collection are now available to browse online.
• Developing exhibitions that explore Long Island’s remarkable material and cultural past at their headquartersGallery in Cold Spring Harbor.
• Presenting innovative
educational programs about local history and the built environment at Preservation Long Island owned historic properties as well as onsite programs for school groups.
• Publishing scholarly works and books.
Preservation Long Island’s groundbreaking publications on Long Island history and decorative arts remain the go-to sources for studying Long Island’s heritage.

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board announce the return of “Music Under the Stars” – a free summer concert series – which kicks off on Wednesday July 5th and features a wide variety of genres ranging from country to rock. All concerts begin at 8pm unless otherwise noted below. For comfort, residents may bring blankets, chairs and coolers. Performances are subject to change and will be held weather permitting.
