During a play-off game between Massapequa and Locust Valley, Donald

McCullough suffered cardiac arrest. Coach Sean Kilgus, of Massapequa, jumped into action and began to perform CPR alongside Christopher

Stack and Gordon Madden, both of Massapequa Park and fathers of boys on the team. Vincent Papasodero, of Massapequa Park and Vice President of the Islander’s High School Hockey League, retrieved the AED, and its shock along with CPR helped the patient begin to breathe on his own. He was transported to the hospital where he underwent double by-pass surgery and received a pacemaker implant.

“The combined efforts of these courageous men saved the life of a treasured

grandfather, father and 9/11 hero,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Incredibly, all four men involved in this rescue are professional first responders. We cannot thank our first responders and men and women in uniform enough; you are invaluable.”

Coach Sean Kilgus is an FDNY Lieutenant, Christopher Stack and Gordon Madden are both FDNY Firefighters, and Vincent Papasodero is an Operations Director with Northwell Health as well as an NYPD Detective.

On Thursday, June 15th, Friends for Life Senior Foundation held its 3rd Annual Senior Day in the Park at Marjorie Post Park, Massapequa. The invite-only event drew 450+ attendees from the Massapequa and surrounding communities for a fun-filled day. This year’s Luau theme greeted each guest at check-in with their own Lei, and then they were escorted to their tables. The day began with opening announcements from the foundation’s Founder, Amy Recco, welcoming the guests and sponsors that generously

participated to make this day possible—the day included a gourmet catered BBQ Lunch from Broadway Gourmet and special Dilly Bars which are a fan fave from Dairy Queen. Our Resident MVP DJ, Michael Veccia, played music that had the seniors dancing the day away! Over 40 people took home various raffles basket prizes that were on display throughout the day for those who wanted to participate, compliments of sponsors, and many local businesses. The winners enjoyed prizes that included a pair of hearing aids, a digital

August 9th and 10th both offices will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill. There are also outdoor walkup windows, and drop boxes have been installed at both locations for residents to make payments when the Tax Office is closed.

Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the

Strong Start Foreshadows A Bright Future For Massapequa Graduates

A large gymnasium at Hofstra University served as the gathering place for Massapequa High School’s Class of 2023, where they helped each other affix their hats and tassels, and snapped a few selfies. Soon, they were on the move, entering the neighboring Mack Arena as “Pomp and Circumstance” played.

It was the crowning moment for the graduates, a culmination of 13 years of school that gave them a few twists and turns along the way.

“They showed me how to make the best out of their experience at Massapequa High School,” said Principal Barbara Lowell, who started with them at the sprawling Merrick Road campus in 2020, and watched them overcome pandemic restrictions to succeed academically and get actively involved in student life.

She explained that one of her first decisions as principal was selecting the color of their ID badge lanyards, which identifies students by grade. Ms. Lowell picked purple, and she soon realized that the color symbolized many attributes that define the Class of 2023 – bravery, creativity, imagination, loyalty and trust.

Superintendent

Dr. William Brennan, addressing his first graduating class, noted that the Class of 2023 embodies the transformative power of a Massapequa education.

“I see that this class as the future leaders, innovators and change makers that this world is craving,” he said, adding that they need to “keep that fire to learn burning” because their will have careers that last until 2060 or later when jobs could look vastly different.

This year’s class of 482 seniors is graduating with

a collective total of 5,600 college credits. They also earned about $14 million in scholarships from the 127 colleges and universities they are attending next year. Ms.

Lowell also recognized a half-dozen students who will be entering the military, enrolling in a military institution or joining an ROTC program after high school.

Graduates heard from several of their peers including valedictorian James Bacheller, salutatorian Christina Fradella, general organization President Scott Palmer and Class of 2023 President Griffin Hunt.

James, speaking at the very university he will attend in the fall for an eight-year bachelor’s and doctorate program, said he was once told by his second grade teacher and elementary assistant principal that he might be the valedictorian someday. Not knowing what the word meant at the time, it still became a goal for him.

“Achieving this goal was not the work of one,” he said. “There is an adage, ‘it takes a village to raise a child.’ I was supported by my family, teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, coaches and friends, all who shaped me. When we set out to conquer our dreams, we must realize they cannot be accomplished alone.”

Christina, who is headed to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also recounted some profound advice she received in her earlier years. Berner Middle School social studies teacher Maria Casale, who picked up on Christina’s anxiety about always wanting to get a good grade, reminded her to enjoy life when signing her yearbook.

“It took me five years to fully understand her

message,” Christina said. “She was trying to teach me about balance, and that constantly stressing about success and perfection was not a life. A life is having a balance of everything that you deem important.”

Scott, who will attend Penn State University, reminded his fellow graduates that everyone is on a unique journey and to stay true to themselves as they “get out there and do great things.” Griffin, bound for Quinnipiac University, noted that the Class of 2023 is filled with students who have excelled in multiple areas, winning numerous athletic championships and putting on great musical performances and art exhibits. But there is much more ahead, he explained, as their diplomas are just tickets to the real world.

“These past four years should not be the best four years of your life,” Griffin said. “Everything that we have accomplished should just be a precursor for the future.”

Sunrise Mall Hosts Fourth Annual AFSP Blue Angel Car Show

Annual Event At Massapequa Mall Benefits The American Foundation For Suicide Prevention

Urban Edge Properties, Owner and Operator of Sunrise Mall hosted the Fourth Annual AFSP Blue Angel Car Show which attracted a record 512 vintage cars and more than 2,000 spectators. The show, which is recognized as one of Long Island’s largest car shows of the year, benefitted the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Long Island Chapter: Team Brittany Marie, raised a record of over $30,000.

Event organizer, Carrie Aronson, created the show in honor of her daughter, Brittany, who she lost to suicide at the age of 14. From the time Brittany was 8 years old, she would look out their home window in awe of the neighbor’s blue Thunderbird and longed to own the car one day. To celebrate Carrie’s 50th birthday, her husband, Phil, gifted Carrie with the blue Thunderbird that she proudly drives today and named “the Blue Angel” knowing her daughter is sitting right by her side.

“We were thrilled to once again host the Fourth Annual AFSP Blue Angel Car Show at Sunrise Mall. Urban Edge Properties is proud to be part of this event that brings the community together and contributes to such a meaningful cause,” said Patricia Zafferese, Vice President Specialty Leasing Urban Edge Properties.

Summer ‘Movies By Moonlight’ In Town Of Oyster Bay Parks

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board announce that free ‘Movies by Moonlight’ will be offered in local parks on Thursday evenings this summer, beginning July 6th and concluding on August 10th. Residents are welcome to bring blankets

and chairs when attending these family-friendly movies.

“Residents and families looking for a fun night need look no further than their backyards this summer as the Town is ready with a summer to remember,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“We’re thrilled to once

again show family-friendly films at our local parks, along with character meet and greets, inflatables, free popcorn, food trucks, games, and more. Join us at these pop-up movie nights and sit back, relax and enjoy the show.”

Seating and pre-movie activities will begin at 6:00

p.m. including character meet and greets at select movies, inflatables, free popcorn, food trucks and games. All movies begin at sundown and are subject to change. They will be held weather permitting. For additional information, please call (516) 797-7925 or visit the Town’s website
