Pen Pals End The Year While they won’t be classmates until they reach middle school in a few years, students from two second grade classes in the Massapequa School District connected throughout the year. Children in Christine

Marshall’s class at East Lake Elementary School were pen pals with students in Jennifer Lidonnici’s class at Fairfield Elementary School. The children exchanged letters during the school

Writing Inspiration Instead of selecting a famous person from history to write about, students in Danielle McCaffery’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District wrote about each other. With support from ESL teacher Mary

Gaynor, students learned more about biography writing while getting to know their classmates a little better. Students had to interview their partners and gather biographical information such as birthday, family,

interests and personality traits. The lesson included a technology component as each child used an iPad to take a picture of his or her partners, which were included with the writing pieces.

The South Farmingdale Water District (SFWD), which serves South Farmingdale, North Massapequa as well as parts of Bethpage, Seaford and Massapequa Park, has released its 2018 Drinking Water Quality Report, and is proud to announce that the District’s water meets and exceeds all local, state and federal standards, requirements and criteria. The report is required to be made public, in compliance with federal and state regulations. Compiled by a local engineering firm and a local laboratory service, in conjunction with Nassau County Department of Health, this in-depth report contains valuable information regarding District water quality, treatment, sources, conservation measures, cost and water quality statistics. In a statement from the Board of Water Commissioners, “South Farmingdale Water District’s continuing goal is to provide our customers with quality, dependable drinking water each and every day. We’re happy to announce that there are no violations of any drinking water standards. We encourage our consumers to request a copy of the report and share it with others.” The Board also added, “Our staff of water professionals follow strict procedures which contain quality control safeguards, including aggressive water sampling which is

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).

After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection.
