The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually.

Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian.

The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications.

According to the American Red Cross, its staff members routinely check the level of hemoglobin in donors’ blood and platelets before they accept donations. Hemoglobin is

a protein in the body that contains iron and gives blood its distinctive red color. Hemoglobin plays a vital role in human health, carrying oxygen from the lungs to nourish all of the tissues in the body.

Hemoglobin levels are checked using fingersticks, and if hemoglobin levels are low, then donors will

be asked to wait to donate until their levels return to normal. So what does food have to do with hemoglobin? Iron is a part of hemoglobin and found in many of the foods a person eats. Iron helps people maintain their strength and energy, and it’s also necessary to help the body make new blood

cells to replace the ones that are lost through blood donations. The Red Cross encourages prospective donors to eat healthy foods that are rich in iron and high in vitamin C, as doing so can increase their chances of being accepted as blood donors and can aid in their recoveries after donating.

Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonprofit organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others. The importance of community should never be overlooked, and Blue Umbrella Experience definitely understands that!

The classes that this nonprofit offer either take place at their new location, which is 150 Motor Parkway, Suite 11, Hauppauge, NY 11788 or online! Some classes they offer are: Yoga, Martial Arts, Acting and Improv, Music Appreciation, Art, Digital Design and Technology, World Cultures, History of Walt Disney, Languages and Humanities, Personal Development, Finances and Math for everyday use, Communications, Animals & Nature and Cooking for all abilities and all levels.

“We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonprofit Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive

Transition Program and first and foremost, a love of supporting positive growth in their students; and so, through our Above and Beyond Community Class initiative, BUE’s community has grown to an incredible group of over 80 individuals from all over and ranging in age from 14 into their thirties.”

Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning.

To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other.

Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. Also, if you would like to volunteer your time to help fulfill their mission, you can! Lastly, donations are always appreciated.

Free Senior Citizen Summer Programs Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens summer activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers and parks throughout the Town.

Book Club, music, bingo, aquatic classes, and tai chi are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program, which runs through September 3rd.

“I invite our senior residents to participate in these free activities, where they can enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active and engaged during the dog days of summer,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our senior summer activities are some of the most popular programs the Town offers, and I expect this year to be no different with the expansive and diverse activities that will be offered!”

Diploma Display Ideas Graduation day is one of the proudest moments in students’ academic careers.

Once in hand, the document can be put on display. The following are some unique ways to showcase diplomas at home or at work.

Framing One of the classic ways to display a diploma is in a frame. Many businesses offer customized framing where the frame material and the

Some grads may want to include a photograph of the school or a picture of the graduate above the diploma.

Graduates also may want to select a frame and mat that coordinates with school colors.

Create a shadow box Consider displaying the diploma with other mementos from school. A shadow box is a large, deep display frame that can house items that are thicker than photographs or papers.

Items such as a graduation tassel, medal or other award, a varsity jacket patch, or a program from a school performance or awards ceremony can be placed in the shadow box.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some cancers, including cervical cancer and cancers of the vulva and oropharynx, are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The CDC notes that the HPV vaccine protects people against the types of HPV that most often cause cancers. Adults can discuss the benefits of HPV vaccinations with their physicians, as the CDC notes that adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may have already been exposed to HPV, meaning the HPV vaccination will provide less benefit.

Parents should know that the CDC recommends the HPV vaccination for preteens aged 11 to 12 years.

RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY - On June 23, 2021, the Adventureland family celebrated the Grand Reopening of Adventureland with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Almost six years later, they are officially alumni of a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

One of the talents of valedictorian and senior class President Jack Devenish is music, so he compared the journey through high school to starting up a worldfamous music group with friends. Freshman year was getting together to play in someone’s basement, while senior year was finally finishing up that album.

Any like any music career, there were some bumps along the way.

“No matter what,” he told his fellow graduates, “there will always be an audience and a fanbase.

There’s a whole world ready to support you in your dream, no matter how big or small. All you have to do is chase it.”

Salutatorian Devin DiMascio reflected on the lessons learned during the pandemic. At the top of the list, she said, are selflessness and empathy.

“The pandemic taught a very clear lesson about this,” she said. “At its worst points, we took measures to not only prevent ourselves

from getting sick but to keep others safe as well, whether it be a close family member or a stranger at the grocery store. I hope that this value will stick with our generation as we grow older. This extra consideration of the ways in which our actions affect others is a crucial step in making the world a kinder place.”

They survived a year with so many twists and turns and so many ups and downs, Massapequa High School Principal Barbara Lowell said of this year’s graduating class during an outdoor ceremony at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium on June 21. Ms. Lowell, herself a Massapequa alumna, praised the 546 members of the Class of 2021 for their courage and perseverance.

“Our seniors did not let it stop them,” she said of the disruptions caused by the global pandemic. “They were able to complete their 13 years in Massapequa Public Schools with grace and success.”

The venue allowed for an in-person ceremony, with guests spread out throughout the large seating areas which lined three sides of the field.

Graduates sat socially distanced but without masks so the smiles were visible.

Ms. Lowell noted that she first met this highly talented group of students several years ago, when they were seventh graders and she was an administrator at Berner Middle School.

Residents Invited to Bring Chairs, Coolers to Free ‘Music Under the Stars’ Summer Concert Series at TOBAY Beach Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that residents are reminded to bring chairs and coolers to the Summer Concert Series at TOBAY Beach. In accordance with new CDC guidelines, the concerts will no longer be held in a drive-in fashion

and residents can set up seating areas in the lot at TOBAY. The ‘Movies by Moonlight’ series, held at local parks on Wednesdays this summer, will also be hosted in a traditional manner, inviting residents and families to bring chairs, blankets and coolers to enjoy the show.

The 2021 summer concert and movie series will feature a wide variety of genres ranging from country to rock, providing free family fun for all music lovers, as well as family-friendly movie selections. Admission is open to Town residents beginning at 7 p.m. on a firstcome, first-served basis, and residency
