New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution.

After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

Based in Levittown, New Ground offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.

This organization is also in need of additional volunteers to help out in various areas. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

New Ground hosts various special events throughout the year. In September (exact

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple.

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Students, Veterans Mark Memorial Day The true meaning of Memorial Day was the focus of a ceremony at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on May 23, in which students and veterans came together to honor the men and women who died serving their country.

Student speakers discussed the history of Memorial Day and its many traditions such as the playing of taps, the flying of the American flag at half-staff and the national moment of remembrance. The band, under the direction of Kristin Hodulick, and the orchestra, led by Michael Molloy, performed several patriotic tunes. Students musicians were dressed in

red, white and blue.

William Colfer, from VFW Post 7763 in Massapequa Park, said Memorial Day is the most solemn day of the year for veterans because that is when they pay tribute to their comrades who lost their lives in combat.

He asked the fourth and fifth grade students in attendance to remember the sacrifices that many people have made in the name of freedom.

Assistant to the Superintendent Diana Haanraadts said that the best way that children can show appreciation to veterans is to become good citizens. She called on them to treat everyone with kindness and respect, to lift others up

and to avoid letting their difference divide them.

“That’s what it means to be an American citizen and to honor the all the people who have gone before us in the military,” she said. “Live in a way that shows that we respect what they’ve done for us.”

Principal Lori Dano and Assistant Principal Dr. Kristi Gerhard reminded students that Memorial Day is not about barbecue and a day off from school, but a chance to pay tribute to the people who have defended their country.

“These are the people who have fought to keep us safe and free,” Dr. Gerhard said. “These are the people who have lost friends in wars. We will respect them.”

Wagons Makes A Comeback Getting around in 1781 wasn’t as easy as in modern times, and fourth graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District experienced what travel was like in the early years of the United States.

For the “Let’s Get Moving” STEAM activity, students worked in teams to build covered wagons.

The scenario was that the Revolutionary War was

over and they were set to embark on a trip from New York to North Carolina on the Great Wagon Road.

Students had to build wagons that could hold the necessary supplies for a long trip.

Building materials included cardboard, a piece of canvas and wooden sticks. Students had to follow the engineering process to design and

build their wagons. After construction, students tested the durability of their wagons by adding weights that represented the different items on their supply lists. Magnet and STEAM teacher Loree Moran said that if the wagon broke, children could reflect together and determine how to build it stronger.

At Finance Park, students were given random life scenarios,

such as married, divorced, children and no children, and given jobs, salaries, credit scores and various amounts of debt. Students had to set up budgets for themselves based on their personal circumstances.

They had to apply for a car loan and home loan, as well as shopping for good and services including a car, health insurance, child care, cell phone plan and groceries.

Many of the young consumers realized that the amounts they allotted for certain categories was not enough and had to make.

“It was an eye-opening experience for them,” business teacher Christine Poggioli said. “Many of the students said they had a new appreciation for their parents and all the money they have to spend for different items.”

ON PAR WITH THE PROS - With the PGA Championship recently on Long Island, East Lake Elementary School physical education teachers Laura Cinelli and Stephen Donovan transformed the gymnasium into an 18-hole miniature golf course. During presentations for each grade level, Pringle discussed the inspiration for his books as well as the writing, editing and publishing processes.

Students were able to ask questions and gain valuable insights about nonfiction writing. Pringle also signed copies of his books for the school and visited East Lake’s literacy

displays.

The author-in-residence program was coordinated by library media specialist Renee Susman and reading teachers Carmen Keaney, Debbie O’Mara and Allison Rattoballi with support from computer teaching assistant Susan Corrado.

They explained that the goal is to have every student come away with at least one tip to improve his or her writing.

The Massapequa School District Board of Education appointed a pair of elementary principals for the 2019-20 school year.

Dr. Kristi Gerhard, the assistant principal at Fairfield Elementary School for the past four years, will become the building’s principal. She is replacing Lori Dano, who is retiring at the end of the school year. Before coming to Massapequa, Dr. Gerhard was a fifth grade teacher and a second and fourth grade English as a New Language teacher in the Long Beach School District, as well as pre-kindergarten teacher in Farmingdale.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in education and interdisciplinary studies from Hofstra University, a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language from St. John’s University, an advanced certificate in school building and school district leadership from St.

Dr. Yannucci has been

an elementary assistant principal in the PlainviewOld Bethpage School District for four years. Prior to that, he worked in the Rocky Point School District as an elementary reading teacher and a coordinator of English language arts, reading, library media and art.

Dr. Yannucci holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from SUNY Oneonta, a master’s degree in childhood education and literacy from C.W. Post, an advanced certificate in educational administration from the College of St. Rose and a doctorate in educational administration, leadership and technology from Dowling College.

He has been an adjunct professor for educator graduate courses at Concordia College and an adjunct professor at Suffolk County Community College, and has presented at numerous conferences.
