Hundreds Celebrate Launch Of The Historic Ida May Oyster Vessel

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Town Clerk Richard LaMarca, and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato joined the Christeen Oyster Sloop Preservation Corporation, The Waterfront Center, and hundreds of neighbors to officially launch a replica of the historic Ida May oyster vessel into North Shore Waters. This launch is the culmination of a decadeslong effort to build a fullscale replica of the Ida May, one of the first ever enginepowered oyster dredges to serve our local waters.

Originally built in 1925, the Ida May was one of the first ever engine-powered oyster dredges of her time. She served the local waters of the North Shore for over 75 years, but was too damaged to be restored.

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year, America’s VetDogs is celebrating their 20th anniversary!

In the early 2000s, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, founded in 1946, recognized not only the growing need for specialized service dogs that could help wounded service-members, but also that aging veterans could also benefit from a specially trained service dog. America’s VetDogs was then founded as a program of the Guide Dog Foundation and later became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit. In 2015, first responders with work-related disabilities were added to the individuals served.

Today, the organization supports those they serve with an uncompromised commitment to excellence, from highly empathetic and certified trainers to meticulously constructed curriculum delivered during a two-week, inresidence training program, followed by a lifetime of aftercare support. It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one assistance dog, but services are always provided free to the individuals served.

Town Launches Building Permit Amnesty Program To Provide Financial Relief

Property Owners Invited To Legalize Building Improvements & Avoid Late Fees And Penalties

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces that the Town Board recently approved a Building Permit Amnesty Program to provide for a six-month period for homeowners and commercial property owners to obtain the necessary permits required on building improvements previously completed, without incurring late fees and penalties. This Building Permit Amnesty Program is open now through the end of 2023.

“This Building Permit Amnesty Program allows residents and

business owners with unpermitted and previously-completed improvement projects to legalize their property and avoid costly fines and penalties,” said Supervisor Saladino. “All Towns require building permits on home and business improvements to ensure work is completed in accordance with workmanship and safety standards.”

The Town of Oyster Bay’s Building Permit Amnesty Program applies to all permits, including fence, decking, plumbing and all aspects of construction. Residents can call the Town’s

Department of Planning and Development for additional information on their specific project.

During the amnesty period, standard fees will cover the entire building application process. NMFD Mourns The Passing Of 67-Year Member Jackson B. Pokress Of Friendship Engine Company 3

The Commissioners, Chiefs, officers, and members of the North Massapequa Fire Department mourn the passing of 67-Year member Jackson B. Pokress of Friendship Engine Company 3, who passed away on Saturday,

May 13th at the age of 102.

“Jackson had an amazing legacy of military and community service,” said Chief of Department Mark J. Frascella. “He was a proud World War II Veteran; having enlisted in the United States Army

after the Nation was attacked at Pearl Harbor and served with the famed Merrill’s Marauders in Burma during World War II. He ascended to the prestigious rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He later went to display the same dedication and

bravery over the last 67 years as a highly active and respected member of the North Massapequa Fire Department.”

During his illustrious tenure in the fire service, Jackson was elected as a Fire District Commissioner and went on to become President of the Association of Fire Districts of Nassau County. He was a member of the North Massapequa Fire Department’s Friendship Engine Company 3 and had served for many years as the Chaplain on the North Massapequa Fire Department, where his kindness, wisdom and affability were greatly appreciated by every member of the department.

Jackson worked in public relations, was a renowned photographer and journalist, and owned

local newspapers. He was widely respected by all who worked with him, including many famous people in sports and entertainment, as well as government leaders. “He truly led an exemplary life,” Chief Frascella said. “We will always be proud of his incredible legacy.”

Chief Frascella said the members were honored to serve with Jackson, but also were proud of his distinguished service to the United States of America and

his community. “He represented the gold standard of selfless service and he was a role model for all of us in this Department,”

Chief Frascella said. “A service honoring Jackson will be held on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Chapey’s Funeral Home, located at 20 Hicksville Road in Bethpage. The North Massapequa Fire Department will be holding a firematic service at 8:00 p.m.”

Students Support Peer With A Sweet Gesture

Students showed their love for a classmate who recently underwent a heart transplant with a lollipop fundraiser at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District on April 19.

During lunch periods, students could donate $1 for a heart-shaped lollipop. The fundraiser was organized by the student council in honor of Santino, a sixth grader, who had a transplant over the February break. The proceeds, which exceeded $600, were donated to Sisters by Heart, a foundation that supports patients and families affected by single ventricle heart defects.

Eighth grader Riley Donohue, treasurer of the student council, came up with the idea. She is a neighbor of Santino and has known him for many years. In addition to the buying lollipops, students could write get-well messages to Santino, which Riley delivered to his family.

“I wanted to cheer him up,” she said. “He’s going to love these cards. I wish he was here because everyone is missing him so much. Hopefully, he’ll be back soon.”

Student council advisers Teresa Ferreira and Denise Robertson said that Riley came up with the idea and presented it to them, Principal Jason Esposito and her fellow officers by making a Google Slide presentation.

“She took the initiative,” Ms. Ferreira said. “We all pitched in and made it happen.”

Student council officers spread the word about the lollipop sale, then worked the booth during lunch periods, selling their entire supply of sweets.

“We’re so happy for Santino that he is getting better and we can’t wait to have him back,” Principal Jason Esposito said. “Berner’s heart is always with him and we’re so glad our students have had this opportunity to support him.”

Massapequa Students, Veterans Mark Memorial Day

Bravery, courage and patriotism were oftrepeated themes at the Memorial Day ceremony on May 25 at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students and staff paid tribute to the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for their country.

Students were clad in red, white and blue as they listened to speeches and patriotic tunes. They gave a long ovation to veterans in attendance, which included members of Massapequa VFW Post 7763 and AmVets Post 88. The veterans also served as the color guard for the ceremony.

“Every day, we are extremely fortunate to call America our home,”

Principal Dr. Michael Yannucci said. “But to keep America our home, we rely on the brave servicemen and women who go all over the world to protect us.”

Dr. Yannucci asked for a moment of silence for all in attendance to reflect

and think about those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Superintendent Dr. William Brennan also called on everyone to take a moment over the long holiday weekend to pause and truly lean into what Memorial Day is about.

“I am in awe of the bravery and courage that our service members

display,” Dr. Brennan said. “For the men and women who served in our military, and to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, let us never take our freedom and our rights for granted.”

Student council President Dylan Scro led the Pledge of Allegiance and student speakers Aiden Levey, Keane Rimler and

Maggie Rudolph discussed the meaning and history of Memorial Day, as well as the symbolism of poppy flowers. Second graders, under the direction of music teacher Kathleen Dyckman, sang “A Day of Honor” and “God Bless America.”
