MTAC Recognizes Arlo Drug Store

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) recently acknowledged Arlo Drug Store for its work in the Massapequas’ to prevent substance use. The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. LIMEHOF, located in Stony Brook, is heavily engrossed in our local communities and o ers Long Islanders many ways to get involved.

The Hall of Fame is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program, where they will award $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Su olk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music.

Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration On May 19th

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that veterans and active United States military personnel are invited to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration slated for Friday, May 19th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. This free event, open to Town of Oyster Bay veterans and active duty personnel,

will include a BBQ and entertainment by the singing group American Bombshells.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is committed to serving veterans and ensuring they have access to important benefits in which they are entitled to,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“This is an important way of thanking our brave hometown heroes for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each and every day as Americans.”

President Harry S. Truman established Armed

Forces Appreciation Day in 1950 as a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. This single holiday provides an opportunity for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. The Town’s celebration includes a patriotic musical salute to our hometown heroes, including a special performance by the “American Bombshells,” and a free barbeque.

Ames Welcomes Massapequa Alums To Career Day

Massapequa alumni, spanning more than 50 years of graduating classes, offered words of wisdom to ninth graders at the Ames Campus on April 21. The annual Alumni Career Day featured professionals who were educated locally and graduated from either Massapequa or Berner High School.

This year’s career day featured 20 speakers on five

panels. Students attended two sessions and got to hear from professionals representing a variety of careers including communications, education, finance, government, hospitality, law enforcement, medicine, real estate and sales. The speakers graduated as far back as 1965 and as recent as 2019, and represented both the

public and private sector.

This was the 16th annual career day and Principal Tania Willman noted that some speakers have been coming every year for more than a decade. She noted how well they connected with students as they offered practical advice and guidance.

“We’re continuously grateful for the time of our alumni generously give in

sharing their experiences and their journeys,” she said.

Alumni Career Day was organized by Career and Technical Education Supervisor Patricia LiVecchi, School-toCareer Coordinator Denise DeLury and business education teachers Christine Poggioli. Students found the program very beneficial.

Giuliana Farella, who isn’t sure what career path she wants to pursue yet, said it opened her eyes to many different options. She particularly enjoyed hearing from an alumna who interns at NASA as a flight simulation developer.

Brady Gil said career day showed him how people have had different experiences in their professional lives, and also

how he can take classes in high school that would prepare him for the future.

“This was a great opportunity so I can see other people’s jobs and the hard work that’s involved,” he said.

Added Emma Pflaum, “It was nice to see a variety of options and how people go on different paths in life.”

Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive Returns Saturday, May 13, 2023

Island Harvest Food Bank, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), and the United States Postal Service (USPS) are pleased to announce the return of the annual Stamp Out Hunger®, the nation’s most extensive one-day food collection campaign. This year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive is on Saturday. May 13, 2023, and all food collected in Nassau and Suffolk counties will benefit Island Harvest in providing much-needed supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who face hunger and food insecurity, including nearly one-third who are children.

“Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest.

“Generous Long Islanders are encouraged to leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to their mailbox before the regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Then, your USPS letter carrier will do the rest to help make sure that no one on

Long Island goes hungry.”

Non-perishable food items to be donated include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelfstable milk (please, no food or juices in glass containers). In addition, personal care items such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and disposable diapers are accepted. All goods donated on Long Island will help replenish Island Harvest’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in communities throughout Long Island.

“Every donation, no matter how small, helps our neighbors who are in the unenviable position of choosing between paying for such things as housing, transportation, and medicine or putting food on the table,” said Ms. Shubin Dresner. “I am confident that the past generosity displayed by our Long Island neighbors will help make this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive one of the most successful.”

Stamp Out Hunger food collection was temporarily discontinued in 2020.

Since its inception in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger has collected more than 1.75 billion pounds of food in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin

Islands to help address the issue of hunger in America. On Long Island, Stamp Out Hunger brought in over 519,000 pounds of food in 2019 before the event was temporarily suspended from 2020 through 2022 due to the pandemic.

To The Friends & Neighbors of The Peninsula Golf Club and Local Civic Associations,

As you may be aware, the Town of Oyster Bay is moving forward with its plan to seize the Peninsula Golf Club (PGC) by eminent domain. This plan, which the Town approved in October 2021, has been the subject of local news reports that are not entirely correct and fail to give a complete picture of the proceedings to date.

Despite the Town’s stated reasons for their action, it is hard to imagine any net bene t to the public in seizing a privately-owned golf course that is open to the general public on a non-discriminatory basis, and that is operated at private expense, to make it a publicly-owned golf course that charges higher fees to guests from our neighboring towns and counties and operates at taxpayers expense. The Town has stated that it is acting to ensure that the property remains a golf course and is not developed into residential housing, but the fact is PGC has not offered or solicited offers to sell the club, nor has PGC made any attempt to disturb the restrictive covenant with Nassau County that has been in place for over 75 years. Instead, PGC has operated the club since 1947 as a public golf course in faithful adherence to the covenant, and it rejected the two unsolicited offers to purchase the club made in 2021, including an informal indication of interest by the Town before the eminent domain proceeding began.

As noted in our counsel’s letter, PGC has offered to address the Town’s concerns by granting a “right of rst refusal” that would give the Town the options to match any serious offer to purchase the course before PGC could conclude any sale to a third party. This solution should be more than sufficient to ensure that the Town’s stated concerns are fully addressed without the time and expense of litigation to both parties.

Verastegui Earns President’s Medal for Scholarship

Willie N. Verastegui, a recent graduate at SUNY Old Westbury and a resident of Massapequa Park, New York, has been selected for the highest

student honor earned at SUNY Old Westbury, the President’s Medal for Scholarship.

“This honor can only be earned through

outstanding efforts throughout an academic career here at Old Westbury, but beyond that, a demonstration of drive, determination and

dedication to go far and succeed in living out the College’s mission,” said President Dr. Timothy E. Sams.

Verastegui completed his studies in December 2022 with a degree in Health & Society after having earned a 3.97 grade point average at Old Westbury. He is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, having served as the National

Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS) chapter leader of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). In pursuit of his own medical goals, he volunteered at the NYU Langone Health surgical ICU.

The father of two young children, Verastegui volunteers at a food pantry in the Bronx, and during his time there, created a class project on healthy

food accessibility in lowincome communities.

The Old Westbury President’s Medal was created in 1986 to honor outstanding academic achievement among its graduating students. To be eligible, a student must be a senior, have completed a minimum of 24 credits at Old Westbury, and have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or greater.

Massapequa Recruits Its Next Generation Of Music Makers

Third graders at Unqua Elementary School are excited for the prospect of joining musical ensembles next year, and recently they got to explore their options.

Across the Massapequa School District, students can join the chorus, band and orchestra when they enter fourth grade. To help them understand their choices, Unqua held a music recruitment session on April 21.

Third graders gathered in the auditorium where they met with band teacher Christopher Marson, choral director Janice Abel and orchestra teacher Alison Pearl. They were joined by fifth graders, who showcased they different instrumental options. Each played a section of “Hot Cross Buns.”

There are four string instruments that comprise the orchestra and nine instruments that make

up the elementary band, representing the brass, percussion and woodwind sections. After hearing the fifth graders play, the teachers passed the instruments around. After hearing, seeing and touching the instruments, third graders then selected their top three choices. Teachers make the final selections to ensure wellbalanced ensembles.

Long Island Music Hall of Fame Now Accepting 2023 Music Scholarship Applications

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHoF) it is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program. The Deadline for applications is Friday, May 12th, 2023.

LIMEHoF will award $500

scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career

• Letter of recommendation from an individual who can attest to the applicant’s commitment to a music career

• Graduating high school senior from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn (Kings) or Queens counties

• Minimum 2.5 GPA

• Accepted full-time at an accredited college or university

• Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in music

• Demonstrate Financial need

• U.S. citizen or legal resident with I-55 permanent residency

Signature Premier Properties And North Shore Young Professionals Partner To Support Mental Health Awareness

Signature Premier Properties and North Shore Young Professionals (NSYP) are teaming up to host a charity event and social media challenge to raise awareness and funds for mental health causes. The event will take place on June 2nd at Napper Tandy’s in Smithtown, NY, and will feature networking, games, a casino, and an open bar.

The event is being organized by Justin Soriano, a 25-year-old real estate professional and NSYP founder, who believes in the power of networking and giving back to the community. Since its inception, NSYP has raised tens of thousands of dollars for various charities, including the Smithtown Children’s Foundation and Life’s Worc. The upcoming event will benefit James Journey, a charity that supports mental health causes and offers a scholarship program for high school seniors. James Journey is named in honor of James Audley, a young man who lost his life to struggles with mental health. The charity is close to Soriano’s heart, and he hopes to raise over $10,000 at the event to support its mission.

In addition to the charity event, Signature Premier Properties and NSYP are launching a social media challenge called #BreakTheStigma. The challenge aims to encourage people to start conversations about mental health and help raise funds for James Journey through donations. To participate, all you have to do is record a video of yourself breaking an object of your choice and share it on social media using the

hashtag #BreakTheStigma. Signature Premier Properties will donate $5 for every video up to $1000, and participants are encouraged to tag @signaturepremierproperties and @northshoreyoungprofessionals on Instagram.

New Pickleball Courts Coming Soon To Town Of Oyster Bay Parks

Pickleball Courts To Open In Bayville, Farmingdale, Massapequa, Plainview, Woodbury Dline Example

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announce that new Pickleball Courts are coming soon to parks throughout the Town of Oyster Bay. Due to popular demand, the Town is constructing new Pickleball Courts at John Burns Park in Massapequa, Field of Dreams and Anchor Park in Massapequa, Allen Park in Farmingdale, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. Courts are anticipated to open to the public in September 2023.

“Pickleball is a fun sport for all ages that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It’s become incredibly popular in our Town, with seniors and families playing daily at our existing courts in Massapequa and Bethpage,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Due to this popular demand, I’m proud to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay is building new Pickleball courts for all residents to enjoy.”

ickleball is played with a wooden paddle and lightweight plastic ball and can include two, three, or four players. The dimensions and layout closely resemble a badminton court,

which is considerably smaller than a tennis court. Rules of the game are somewhat similar to tennis. These new Pickleball courts come in addition to existing Town courts located at H. Garrick Williams Park in Massapequa and behind the Bethpage Library in Bethpage.

“Pickleball is a very fun, social and healthy activity for the whole family and these new courts will be a welcome addition to the community. So, grab your sneakers and paddle, and get ready to play one of the world’s fastest growing sports at a new court near you!” added Councilman Labriola.

Bird Walk At Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Join the South Shore Audubon Society on a bird walk on Sunday, May 21, starting at 9 AM, at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

To reach the Refuge, take the Southern State Parkway west to the Belt Parkway. Exit at Cross Bay Boulevard (Exit 17) south. Continue south on Cross Bay Blvd. through Howard Beach and over the

North Channel Bridge (also known as the Congressman Joseph P. Addabbo Bridge).

The entrance to the refuge parking lot is on the right side of the road, at a traffic light approximately one and a half miles past the bridge.

All are welcome. Walk leaders and other birders and nature enthusiasts will be happy to share their
