Volunteers Needed To Donate Blood Plasma To Help Hospitalized Patients With COVID-19 Drug Administration (FDA) began allowing healthcare providers to request the use of convalescent plasma in patients with serious or immediately life-threatening COVID-19 infections on March 27. Less than a week later, on April 2, Stony Brook University Hospital received FDA approval to offer the treatment to its patients through a randomized, controlled study (the gold standard in research) and is expected to enroll up to 500 patients from the Long Island area.

Substance misuse is not on PAUSE in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic! Your help is needed now more than ever to coordinate prevention efforts to find the best ways to keep youth safe and healthy.

The YES Community Counseling Center’s PACT Project (Partnering in Action and Change for Tomorrow) collaborates with the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC), the Farmingdale ADAPT (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team) and the Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC) to prevent underage drinking and substance misuse in our communities.

Working together, we seek to understand patterns of substance misuse to better address this challenge through targeted prevention, education and outreach.

Parents and residents are asked to take YES Community Counseling Center’s PACT survey to provide critical input to our youth’s health and future across Levittown, Massapequa, Farmingdale, Island Trees, Massapequa Park and Plainedge All parents and residents are asked to take five minutes to complete PACT’s short survey. A Stony Brook Medicine research study is underway to determine if blood plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19 can help treat hospitalized patients with active COVID-19 infection.

Stony Brook is seeking coronavirus survivors to donate blood plasma and researchers are collecting the convalescent serum to use in an experimental treatment strategy in those battling the disease.

Plasma, the liquid portion of the blood, which helps with clotting and supporting immunity, contains antibodies that can potentially be used to kill the virus. The U.S. Food and

The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue and could really use your help. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations to this organization are down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses.

“We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.”

Uplifting Community News!

Mr. & Mrs. Garvey live in Babylon with their 3 children, Kate (11) and Eloise and Sam (10 year old twins). Since the beginning of the stay-at-home order, their kids decided to set up a table on their driveway every single day, weather permitting, to collect food for St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. A neighbor (Anthony Pascarella - owner of CJS Printing ) whom they did not know before the food drive, dropped off several printed signs for them, unsolicited and free of charge. The signs have been very helpful in alerting the community about the food drive. When they began collecting food in late March, Kate, Eloise and Sam set a goal for themselves to collect 1 ton of non-perishable food items and paper products, and they have already surpassed it! With 3000 pounds of donated food collected, they are exited and confident they can reach their new goal of 2 tons very soon.

Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of.

We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans.

Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle to provide their services.

What about health insurance?

and measure IgM and IgG antibodies, specifically to COVID-19, was the assay of choice for Stony Brook.

“Our unique patented technology uses one of our two analyzers (the MR1 and MR2) produced

by Chembio, to read the test results for both IgM and IgG from finger stick blood in 15 minutes and give a numerical result related to the amount of antibody in the sample,” said Esfandiari.

“This takes away the individual subjectivity of results and increases the sensitivity and specificity of the test.

Chembio has now received authorization to market and sell the DPP COVID-19 IgM and IgG assay system in the US through the FDA notification process.”

A Journal of the American Medical Association study of the treatment shows promise from a team of Chinese scientists describing the use of convalescent plasma in five

patients with COVID-19.
