Long Island Music Hall of Fame Now Accepting 2023 Music Scholarship Applications

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHoF) it is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program. The Deadline for applications is Friday, May 12th, 2023.

LIMEHoF will award $500

scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career

Drive-Thru Sports Equipment Collection Drive

Mayor Daniel Pearl, is holding a drive-thru sports equipment collection drive on Sunday, May 7, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Massapequa High School – west side parking lot. Drivers are to enter the school’s west driveway from the Merrick Road entrance, drive through, drop off donations, and exit out the back.

Assemblyman Durso is asking community members and

organizations to kindly donate new or gently used sporting equipment to benefit local youth athletes. All items collected will be distributed by Pronto of Long Island, which provides a multitude of services to families in need throughout Long Island.

“If you’re looking to get rid of sports equipment you and your family no longer use, we ask that you donate it to underserved kids who will put it to good use to get in the game,” said Assemblyman Durso. “It’s a home run…you cleared out your garage and played it forward!”

“This drive-thru collection event provides a win-win opportunity for our residents to clean out their unused equipment and feel like a champion for our young athletes,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Your sporting goods could make all the difference in the life of a young athlete who might not otherwise have the chance to participate in a sport they love.”

“As a father of three boys who all play sports, I know how important it is for children to have the opportunity to participate in our sports programs. Thanks to this program, children and their families in need will have access to sports equipment to help remove any barriers for our young athletes,” said Mayor Pearl.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that there are still openings for summer employment in the Town of Oyster Bay. Positions are available for the 2023 Summer Recreation Program, as well as the Youth Tennis Program. Those

Tennis Assistants must be 16+, have at least 1- 2 years of experience participating on a Tennis team, and be available for the duration of the program, which also runs from June 26th until August 11th. Tennis runs Monday through Thursday, between the

hours of 3:45 p.m. and 8 p.m.

She battled a serious case of double pneumonia and both her lungs became severely damaged as a result. According to Jasmine, it was time for her to get back on her feet. She decided to challenge herself and hit the pavement once again. She ran her first 5K with OG Training Academy in Lindenhurst.

She hopes that her story would serve as a means to spread motivation and hope to those that are struggling with any illness, whether it be mentally or physically. “Do not let an illness, of any kind, convince you that something is impossible,” Jasmine said. “It doesn’t mean that it will be easy, but definitely worth trying!”

Currently, Jasmine has signed up for her first Sprint Triathalon with New York Triathalon at Rockaway Beach and will continue her running career, letting nothing stand in her way!

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. To date, the organization has inducted more than 100 musicians and music industry executives, and also o ers education programs and scholarships to Long Island students, sponsors the Long Island Sound Award, and features traveling educational exhibits, including a state-of-the-art mobile museum.

Last year, the organization opened its doors to their new awe-inspiring 8,800 Sq Ft facility in Stony Brook, NY, which features a large exhibition area, theater, performance area and an o cial “Hall of Fame Museum.”

All entry tickets include free parking and access to all their location has to o er. As a non-profit, your admission fee and donations help to support their Education Scholarship program for high school students and their Health and Harmony program, bringing musicians and entertainers to senior centers, hospitals and other places of need.

“For over a decade, the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame has been delighted to distribute tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships, providing support to numerous aspiring professional musicians and music teachers,” said Tom Needham, LIMEHOF Education Committee Chairman.

New York Blood Center Declares First Blood Emergency Of 2023

New York Blood Center (NYBC) declared the first blood emergency of 2023. The blood emergency is due to several evolving factors, including recent poor weather, school breaks and cold and flu season. NYBC and its divisions across the nation received 6,000 fewer blood donations than the year prior and blood donations are 12% below hospital and patient needs. The number of blood donations still are not back to pre-pandemic levels. Compounding the problem is a continued lag in firsttime and youth donors, which remain about half of pre-pandemic levels. And while New Yorkers are returning to in-person work, office and community blood drives and visits to NYBC Donor Centers are significantly down. People working from home had an easier time donating in our donor centers, but we’re

“Each winter, we struggle to get folks to donate blood and this year is no exception. We need more New Yorkers to make blood donations, host blood drives and spread the word about the need for donations,”

New York Blood Center. “Last year, we expanded our reach with a new donor center, and we recently announced new donor guidelines from the FDA; we are expanding in every way we can in order to reach new donors. This March, make a blood donation and tell a friend!”

In addition to whole blood donors, platelet donors are urgently needed. With a shelf life of just 7 days, NYBC relies on dedicated platelet donors to help patients undergoing chemotherapy, those with bleeding disorders, new mothers, and

more.

Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted eligibility restrictions for individuals who lived in Europe during certain periods of time. About Cycle for Survival:

About 50% of people with cancer have a rare cancer. Rare cancers include brain, pancreatic, ovarian, stomach, all types of pediatric cancers, sarcomas and many more.

Even though they account for about half of all cancer diagnoses when combined, research on many rare cancers is drastically underfunded, often leaving patients with limited or no treatment options.

Cycle for Survival was started in 2007 by Jennifer Goodman Linn and her husband, Dave Linn.

Jen was a Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) sarcoma patient and Equinox member.

She was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma in 2004, at age 32 and 1year after getting married.

After undergoing treatment at MSKCC, Jen founded Cycle for Survival in 2007 (then called Spin4Survival) as a way to give back to the doctors who treated her at MSKCC.

The first event was held in the cycling studio at Equinox Columbus Circle and brought together family, friends, and colleagues who rode and raised $250,000 for MSKCC.

In that moment, Jen sparked what has now become a national movement partnered by MSKCC and Equinox.

Equinox is the founding partner of Cycle for Survival. Equinox’s unwavering support has helped the events grow exponentially, from one cycling studio in New York City to large events across the country. Its world-renowned cycling instructors lead each ride, and Equinox’s leadership and staff dedicate significant

time and resources to raise awareness and funds.

Throughout her sevenyear battle with cancer, Jen was unwavering in her commitment to raise money and help people facing rare cancers like hers, making a better future possible through more research, clinical trials, and ultimately, lifesaving treatments — bringing hope to patients and families worldwide.

Together Jen and Dave ignited The Cycle for Survival fundraising movement — and Jen’s legacy lives on.

Despite losing Jen in 2011, we continue to be inspired by her fearless determination and passion to beat rare cancers and ensure better outcomes for everyone.

Cycle for Survival is now an annual fundraiser that occurs throughout the Nation from March through May. 100% of every dollar supports pioneering research and lifesaving clinical trials at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK).

People Ride together on stationary bikes in 13 cities across the United States. All rides are four-hour relay-style events. You can build your own team, join an existing one, or participate individually.
