Massapequa Schools Conducting Breakfast Program Survey

The Massapequa School District will be conducting a survey of parents of students in kindergarten through fifth grade who attend the district’s elementary schools to determine if there is any interest in a school breakfast program.

Massapequa Artist To Be Featured In Selective Show

Art has long been a passion for Massapequa High School senior Lily DiBenedetto. Her hard work recently paid off, as one of her pieces was selected for an upcoming show, Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum.

The annual juried exhibition runs from April 29 to June 4. It will feature artwork from 91 students in Nassau and Suffolk counties that was completed during the 2022-23 school year.

Lily is Massapequa’s first student-artist ever selected to this show, which had more than 500 applicants this year.

Her featured piece is a self-portrait that was created digitally using Krita. It was a project for her Advanced Placement art class, and was also featured in this year’s All-County art show, hosted

by the Nassau County Art Supervisors Association.

Earlier this year, students from the AP art class visited the Heckscher Museum, where they saw the work of Long Island artists. Teacher Paul Leone tasked each student with creating an original piece that was inspired by artwork they saw in the museum. Lily said an unfinished selfportrait was the inspiration for her piece that will soon hang at Heckscher.

“I wasn’t expecting to be selected, so it was definitely surprising,” she said. “It’s very encouraging, because I plan on continuing with art in college.”

In the fall, Lily will attend SUNY New Paltz to pursue her dream of becoming an art teacher. At Massapequa High School, she has enrolled in numerous

art courses including Computer Art and Drawing and Painting levels 1 and 2, as well as an Introduction to Photoshop technology class.

Lily said Massapequa’s art program has helped her hone her skills and broaden her horizons. Her teachers have also turned her on to other art exploration opportunities, such as courses through Adelphi University’s pre-college program.

“Lily is phenomenally talented,” Mr. Leone said. “Everything she does, she excels at. She’s so dedicated and hard-working, and I’m so proud of her.”

She will be invited to an opening reception for the artists on April 29, which will be followed by an awards presentation.

Collection Drive To Support Veterans At VA Hospital

Richard LaMarca today announced that the Town will host a “Spring into Action” Collection Drive in support of the Northport VA. During the month of April, residents are invited to donate toiletries and clothing.

“From hosting veteran appreciation events to recognizing their service with Hometown Heroes Banners in our parks, the Town of Oyster Bay is committed to honoring veterans for their service to our nation,”

Supervisor Saladino said. “Please join this mission to help bring the comforts of home to veterans living at the Northport VA Hospital

by making a donation to our collection drive during the month of April.”

Most needed items include toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, unscented deodorant, body wash, unscented lotion, nail clippers, and shampoo), clothing (men’s underwear size 2XL & 3XL, men’s sweat suits size 2XL & 3XL, socks, flip flops, pajamas, and scarves), and entertainment (magazines, movies, and CDs, especially Greatest Hits of the ‘50s & ‘60s).

“When I learned that the Northport VA has a “Wish List” of items their veterans need, I knew Supervisor Saladino and the Town Board would spring into action with me

to help ensure these needs are met,” Clerk LaMarca said. “I thank them for partnering with me to organize this critical initiative, and I thank the residents of our wonderful Town in advance for their generosity and support of our Veterans.”

The Town’s Collection Drive will run through the month of April. The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

American Parkinson Disease Association Celebrates The Importance

Community & Connection During Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month

April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month and the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) Information & Referral Center of Suffolk County is hard at work to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and to celebrate the important connections that help foster a supportive community for people impacted by PD. Through a nationwide network of Chapters and Information & Referral Centers, APDA works tirelessly to provide the support, education and research that helps people impacted by PD live life to the fullest. Often the first line of defense after a diagnosis, APDA connects people to the information they need to feel more in control; to the medical experts who can help them manage their disease; and to the support and services

that can help them feel less alone throughout their PD journey.

During the month of April, the APDA Information & Referral Center at St. Catherine of Siena and St. Charles Hospital in Suffolk County has a full roster of activities planned for the month (and beyond) and many ways for people to get involved, including a Live Your Best Life with Parkinson’s Disease seminar on April 24 at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson (to RSVP call 631-474-6797), and also many Parkinson’s support groups, programs such as the Loud & Lyrical vocal group (to register call 631-862-3560), and more.

Throughout April, APDA will also be sharing messages of inspiration and information on all APDA social media channels using

#APDAconnects.

In New York alone, more than 65,000 people over the age of 60 are diagnosed and living with PD. Now more than ever, it is critical to support, engage and inform the PD community and raise awareness about this disease, and Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month is a great time to shine a spotlight on this issue.

“Every six minutes there is a new diagnosis of PD, which means that in April alone nearly 7,200 people in this country will learn they have PD. These people need to know that they are not alone, and that APDA is here for them” states Julie Garofalo, RN, Coordinator of APDA’s Suffolk County Information & Referral Center. “Here in on Long Island we are the boots on the ground – from support groups and exercise

classes to educational seminars and financial support programs – APDA can help connect you to so many people and resources that can make your PD experience more positive” Garofalo continues.

Beyond New York, APDA offers extensive virtual programming to make sure that no matter where you live, you have access to high-quality PD information and programs and feel connected to the PD community even from afar. From the popular Dr. Gilbert Hosts webinar series and the ongoing Spanish-language Café con la doctora program, to the robust calendar of virtual exercise and movement classes – there is something for everyone.

The support of the general public is crucial, and April is the perfect time to take action and help the more than one

million people in the United States coping with this chronic neurological movement disorder. Whether you help by raising awareness of PD or by making a donation that enables APDA to continue their critical work and fund research that will lead us to better treatments and ultimately, a cure; every effort makes a difference.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town will once again host the prestigious Special Olympics Spring Games in partnership with Special Olympics New York. Held at the Farmingdale Athletic Complex on Saturday, May 6th, the games will include a full-day of competitive track and field events for over 500 athletes supported by more than 300 coaches. These athletes - children and adults with intellectual disabilities - have dedicated months to training for an Olympicstyle competition that will culminate with the contest during these Spring Games.
