The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

A trained specialist from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s office will discuss signs of an opiate overdose, overdose risk factors, recognizing and responding to an overdose, and the administration of Naloxone (Narcan). Each registered participant will receive a free Narcan kit at the completion of the training.

“We’ve seen in recent years that Narcan is the quickest way to restore normal breathing and save the life of a person who is overdosing on opioids,” said Babylon Town Councilman Terence McSweeney. “Narcan can be administered by anyone who is properly trained to do so, and with the recent rise in overdoses, it is imperative that we educate the public so we can all aid our first responders in saving lives,” he added.

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP,

is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who

fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs. Anyone interested should call Western Suffolk BOCES to meet with a counselor. Call 667-6000, Ext. 327 to register.
