Long Island Senate Majority delegation announced the ‘MTA RAIL Act’ at the Hicksville LIRR station. The MTA RAIL Act will overhaul the MTA, its operations, and introduce much needed reforms to the way the MTA operates. They announced a five-point platform that includes an independent, forensic audit of the MTA, giving riders a voting voice on the MTA Board.

The five-point platform includes: an independent, c o m p r e h e n s i v e forensic audit of the MTA’s procurements, improvement to long-term capital planning, providing riders a voting voice on the MTA board, overhauling the way the MTA analyzes itself, and ensuring MTA revenues are more likely to go to New York businesses.

It will also modernize the MTA and work to bring reform, transparency, and improved service to the millions of MTA riders.

Love?

Love is the most cherished gift that life has to offer. It is also one of life’s greatest mysteries with myriad questions to ponder.

Your heart starts to pound, your palms get sweaty, your mind drifts to that person day and night and you may be exhilarated and scared all at the same time. That is the beginning stage of romantic love. Five years later, and perhaps a marriage, children and a mortgage later, you’re no longer jittery around that person, you can definitely focus on your daily tasks, and in fact, you may not think about your significant other for hours at a time while at work.

You may even hit a slump where you find yourself questioning, “Am I still in love?”

The beginning stages of love are just that; the beginning stages. Love is not defined by a list of symptoms like the flu. It’s not a specific destination nor is it an elusive fairytale. The beauty of love is in the journey, and if we are lucky, that journey can last decades where love deepens and takes on many different forms.

In fact, there are times where

we may not even like someone we love, but we would still run to their side or have their back at the drop of a hat (even if we have a scowl on our face while doing it).

There are many forms of love.

We love our parents, siblings, children, friends, animal companions and life partners. We can love looking at a rainbow or a sunset; and we may love God if that is how we choose to express our faith. Love is not to be judged, but experienced. The beauty of love is that it pulls us out of time and space, and brings us into the present moment. It also helps us in our growth and development as human beings. You cannot grow and expand without experiencing love in all its forms. Love can also be as simple as loving yourself, which is essential before you can love anything or anyone else. The old saying, “You cannot give away what you do not have,” has never been truer.

No matter who you are, know that you are not deficient in love, because you are love. Our endless capacity for love is the greatest superpower we possess.

How we define it, measure it, express it, give it and receive it is instrumental in defining the parameters by which we live.

We’ve all heard people say things like, “I want to be defined by this,” or “I don’t want to be defined by that.”

You are not defined by past mistakes, nor are you defined by what you percieve as your greatest worldly achievements.

We are all defined by our ability to give and receive love. You may at times question the love in your life, particularly as it pertains to romantic love. If you are in a new relationship that is still blossoming, enjoy the ride and know that in order for love to grow, it needs to mature into a deeper, more comfortable love. If you are in a longterm relationship or a marriage and you are longing for the days of new love, remind yourself that just as you would not regress to being a baby or a child again, your ripened and developed love could not and should not regress to that of brand new love.

Young Engineers Sir Harley Houndstooth III needed the help of fifth-graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District after he became stranded on a deserted island. Fortunately, they were able to rise to the occasion.

As part of the Great

Desert Island STEAM Challenge, a series of hands-on activities exploring science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics, students had to build a hut for the fictional character to sleep in at night. Magnet and STEAM teacher Jennifer Tand provided

each group with only a limited supply of materials including construction paper, pipe cleaners, sticks and straws. Students had to work together to come up with a shelter that could withstand wind and rain.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

This organization has 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pick-up trash and debris between March and November.

All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for!

Artichoke Pie

Deanna of Islip says her family's Artichoke Pie is typically served as a side (vegetable) dish, but is delicious heated up the next day for lunch, too!

"My mom, Connie, would make this Artichoke Pie recipe as one of the many dishes at holiday gatherings in her home," says Deanna. "Mom passed away last year, just before Easter, at the age of 99. Her recipes will always be a part of our family celebrations as we honor her memory."

What You Will Need 1 14oz can Artichoke hearts (packed in water) ½ lb. mozzarella cut into 1 inch chunks 2 eggs beaten ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper ¼ tsp garlic powder or 1 clove finely

chopped & sautéed in oil ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese 2 tbs. milk 2 homemade or frozen 9 inch pie crusts Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine diced artichoke hearts, mozzarella, eggs, salt, pepper, garlic parmesan cheese and milk into a large bowl. Mix well.

Pour into bottom pie crust. Cover with top crust, pressing to seal the edges. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes (ovens and preference varies).

Recipe makes 6-8 servings.

Four students from the Massapequa School District had their artwork selected 2019 Legislative Student Art Exhibit. Their work was featured in the 29th annual show, which was held from Feb. 25 to March 7 at the Legislative Office Building in Albany.

From the Massapequa High School Ames Campus, ninth-graders Olivia Cristadoro and Madison Mustafa had their fall-themed work featured. They completed their projects under the direction of art teacher Tildy Becker-DeLuca.

East Lake Elementary School fourth-graders Kyra Maddock and Michael Ippolito showcased their comic character paintings.

Their pieces were selected for the show by their art teacher, Patti Krakoff.

Language, Culture, Camaraderie Eager to learn about other cultures, elementary and middle school students from the Massapequa School District took in all that was offered at the annual World Language Festival on March 27.

The 15th annual event was held in the evening at Massapequa High School featuring arts and crafts, entertainment and food.

The festival showcased the six languages offered by the district — American Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

High school students from world language classes, clubs and honor societies coordinated the activities and stamped passports for the children as they visited each room.

In the gymnasium,

students from the Mandarin Chinese program performed sword and fan dances, while ASL students signed along with different songs including the “StarSpangled Banner.” An international food court in the cafeteria was a popular spot throughout the night.

As students in the German program welcomed guests for a cookie decorating activity, they gave each child a nametag with his or her German-translated name.

In the French room, youngsters could make crafts based on the different countries or regions where French is spoken, such as Mardi Gras masks. One of the Spanish rooms had a restaurant theme and another was a game room. Children used their

language skills to give and guess clues in Guess Who and figure out where to put their feet in Twister.

The Mandarin Chinese room featured a chopsticks competition and yo-yo dance workshop. Across the hall, students labeled the different regions of Italy on a large map. Another room had activities devoted to the Mexican celebration of Day of the Dead. Students from the National Art Honor Society did face painting.

William Anderson, the curriculum associate for world language and ENL, said the night was a great opportunity for children make connections globally and with each other by experiencing different languages and cultures.

Echoing Environmental Concerns initiatives in Massapequa to help the environment, and spoke about the new Go Green class which teaches students about environmental responsibility, how to implement sustainable living practices and how to be smart consumers.

The presentation was part of the high school’s Awareness Week, an annual initiative with workshops about physical and mental health. This was the first year environmental health was included. It ended with a quiz about plastics.

Students who guessed correctly received metal straws, an item that they could reuse to cut down on plastic use.

David Black, a professor from Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, presented a

climate change seminar on March 20. Pointing to a chart that showed a steep rise in average global temperatures since the mid-1800s, he spoke about the history of climate change and the reasons behind it.

Professor Black discussed the human impact on climate and addressed different myths and misconceptions. He also talked about the potential impacts on Long Island, particularly along the South Shore and shared ways the people can help solve the problem.

“It’s important to make people aware of what can happen in the future,” Team ECHO president Catherine Gambardella said. “Every little thing that we do now can make a big difference.”

Massapequa High School’s Team ECHO remains steadfast in its commitment to raising awareness about local and global environmental concerns.

The club recently hosted a pair of guest speakers to address specific issues and tell students what they could do to help.

Team ECHO, led by adviser Robert Hempel, welcomed Christine Pfoertner on March 12. She is the science and outreach coordinator for the South Shore Estuary Reserve and discussed the harmful effects of plastics on the environment.

Officers from Team ECHO also had a PowerPoint presentation about the negative impacts of plastics on marine life.

The many talents of the Massapequa School District’s music faculty shines through daily in their students, but on March 25, it was their turn to step into the spotlight. The district’s Fine and Performing Arts Department hosted its

14 solo and ensemble performances, beginning with faculty members playing the “Star-Spangled Banner” with handbells and concluding with a grand finale that featured both teachers and honor music students.

More than 300 guests enjoyed the performances in the Massapequa High School auditorium which included piano solos, a percussion ensemble, a bagpipe and drum duet, a string quartet, a jazz band, a vocal group and more.

This year’s theme was “From Bach to Rock.”

Donations accepted at the door and proceeds from refreshments sales by the Tri-M Music Honor Society will fund scholarships for graduating Massapequa High School seniors.

High Marks on German More than two dozen German language students in the Massapequa School District demonstrated their exemplary linguistic skills with strong performances on the 2019 National German Exam. The exam tested listening and reading comprehension and was taken by high school German language students across the country. It was sponsored by the American Association of German Teachers.

At Massapequa High School’s main campus, where students take Level 3 and 4 German classes, Ryan Brezezinzki was a

gold medal winner. Silver medal recipients were Isabelle Alves, Domenick Anderson, Ryan Cassano, Andrew O’Brien and Isabella Quartiere. The bronze medal was earned by Jacqueline Cipriano, Kerry Hegarty, Veronica Pioreck, Christian Snyder and Kerry Walker.

Achievementlevel recognition went to Furkan Agamak, Matthew Boice, Eric Curran, Natalie Dahlquist, Maxamillion Foley, Derek Haag, Trevor Henderson, Luke Scher, Noah Smith, Anthony Soviero, Max Stefanakos, Dylan Teima and Brianna Utz.

Several Level 2 students were also recognized at Ames campus. Jason Johnson, Matthew Macauley and Kathleen Tumminello were gold medal recipients, Jonathan Yahner earned silver and Emily Reilly received bronze. Recognized for special achievement were Brooke Haag, Lucas Marsh, Vincent Moore, Nicholas Cipriano, Nicholas Monty and Olivia Gennardo.
