Less As Organization Celebrates 100 Years Of Lifesaving Work

Physical activity is one of the best ways to improve overall health and manage stress, yet 1 in 4 U.S. adults are sedentary for more than eight hours each day, which can have negative consequences on physical and mental health. The American Heart Association, the nation’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, established National Walking Day to encourage people to move more throughout their day. This year, in celebration of the organization’s Centennial, communities across the country are invited to gather on Wednesday, April 3 to take a walk and raise awareness of the benefits of movement.

“The American Heart Association is a relentless force for building healthier communities, one step at a time,” said Evelina Grayver, M.D., President of the American Heart Association on Long Island and Director, Women’s Heart Program, Katz Institute for Women’s Health, Northwell Health’s Central Region. “National Walking Day demonstrates the progress that can happen when people come together and take steps, big or small, to improve the health of their communities.”

Walking is one of the simplest ways to get and stay active. Physical activity such as walking can help reduce stress, improve mood and

sleep, and lower the risk of diseases. To participate in National Walking Day, the American Heart Association offers these tips:

Ask colleagues, friends or family to join you.

If you work remotely, take a conference call on the go.

If you have a pet, get moving together! Walking is a win-win for the health of you and your pet.

To participate in National Walking Day, invite friends, family, colleagues or even a pet to join in on a walking route of your choice.

For more tips about getting and staying healthy, visit the American Heart Association’s Healthy for GoodTM initiative at heart. org/movemore.

A 90-Day Blueprint For Home Buyers And Sellers: Navigating The Spring To Summer Market

The summer months in 2024 are expected to have increased activity in the residential real estate market. It may seem like everyone is waiting on the sidelines for interest rates to come down, which should happen this year, but don’t be fooled by what you see: people are getting ready to strike when the floodgates open.

Buyers have told me that they are eager to settle into new homes before the new school year, and sellers who missed the market in 20202022, want to capitalize on the increased demand.

If you’re thinking about buying or selling a home during this peak season, a strategic 90-day plan can significantly help put you into the best position. Here’s what you can do in April, May, and June to be one of the first buyers or sellers this summer.

For Sellers: Maximize Your Home’s Appeal

Days 1-30: Prep and Repair (April/May)

Begin by decluttering and depersonalizing each room to make your home more appealing to a broad audience. Consider minor renovations that could significantly increase your home’s value, such as painting walls, updating fixtures, or refreshing landscaping. Aim to complete these tasks within the first 30 days to allow time for staging and professional photography.

Days 31-60: Market and

Engage (May/June)

List your home with a reputable real estate agent who understands the local market dynamics. They can guide you in setting a competitive price and crafting a compelling listing. Use this time to host open houses and private showings, ensuring your home is in showcase condition every time.

Days 61-90: Negotiate and Close (June/July)

Be prepared for negotiations and have a clear understanding of your bottom line. Work closely with your agent to evaluate offers and finalize the deal. Flexibility and readiness to act swiftly will be crucial during this final phase.

For Buyers: Secure Your Dream Home

Days 1-30: Financial Fitness (April/May)

Is your financial house in order today? Meet with a qualified mortgage broker to get pre-approval and solidify your budget;

factor in your down payment, closing costs, and any renovations you might want. A clear understanding of your finances will enable you to move quickly when you find the right property.

Days 31-60: Hunt and Offer (May/June)

Dive into the housing market with your real estate agent, attending open houses and scheduling viewings. When you find a home that meets your criteria, be ready to make a competitive offer. In a brisk market, timing is everything.

Days 61-90: Due Diligence and Closing

Once your offer is accepted, promptly schedule home inspections to uncover any potential issues. This period is also crucial for finalizing your mortgage, conducting a title search, and purchasing homeowners’ insurance. Stay in close communication with your lender and agent to maximize the chances of a smooth closing.

Navigating today’s real estate market requires preparation, strategic planning, and the ability to act decisively. Whether you’re buying or selling, a 90-day plan centered on the steps listed above can help you make the most of the season’s opportunities. Hopefully, by the time Labor Day weekend 2024 comes around, you are already writing the next chapter of your life.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

Long Island Special Olympics Spring Games Coming to Plainedge!

Save the date, May 4, 2024. The Long Island Region of Special Olympics New York has partnered with Plainedge Public Schools in planning its Spring Games. The Plainedge Athletic Complex located at Plainedge High School is set to host the competition.

The Spring Games expect over 400 athletes, 100 coaches, and thousands of spectators and volunteers. Plainedge Public Schools will host track and field events, powerlifting, and tennis at The Plainedge Athletic Complex - Edward A. Byrne Memorial Field. Farmingdale School District generously offered Plainedge Public Schools the opportunity to host the swimming events at their Aquatic Center located at Howitt Middle School.

We value our comprehensive Special Education Programs in Plainedge and are very proud of our K-12 Best Buddies Program, Unified Sports, and Challenger

Sports. We are excited about the opportunity to host an event of this size with such a broad range of competitions showcasing Plainedge student athletes, as well as student athletes from the entire Metro area.

Plainedge School District has begun to reach out to community members to help take part in this event, which will be held on May 4, 2024. Those interested can help in three ways. The first will be through the volunteer effort of getting the facility ready leading up to the event and then helping clean up and get the facility back to normal. Second, the district will rely on local vendors to help establish the Olympic Village. Specifically, the district will be looking for vendors to provide games and workshops for participants.

Third, the Special Olympics will be looking for donations to help get the event running. We appreciate your participation in advance. We would not be able

to run an event of this magnitude without significant volunteer efforts. Plainedge is such a great place with an amazing community that always comes together when needed. So please sign up now and join us in our drive to make this day an amazing day for all participating.

The Average Individual Is Retiring Earlier Than Many People Might Expect

According to a recent Gallup’s Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents

indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs.

By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

Calm Corner A Space For Tranquility

A new place to pause, reflect and reset has opened at Massapequa High School with the creation of Calm Corner. A room on the second floor has been transformed into a serene atmosphere, which students can use with the recommendation of a professional from the pupil personnel services department.

Principal Barbara Lowell said the idea came from a student who took the popular Mindfulness Matters class. After finding a space, visiting a student wellness center at MacArthur High School in Levittown and lots of planning, the idea became a reality for the second semester this year. The room was painted a calm color and filled with flexible

seating options, artwork, inspirational posters and different manipulatives.

“It was set up so students can take a pause from the day,” social worker Marisa Boulukos said. “It teaches them to self-regulate when they’re having a tough moment.”

Ms. Lowell explained that Calm Corner is part of a greater support system for students. Using the space to self-regulate, she said, is paired with receiving support from either a school guidance counselor, psychologist or social worker.

Calm Corner has a dedicated staff member who can support students and guide them through different activities.

“The feedback has been great,” Ms. Lowell said.

“We found that there was an increased need among students who were looking for a place to destress. They appreciate that Calm Corner is there and they have the ability to use different strategies.”

Ultimately, the purpose of Calm Corner is to support academic success.

It is a space where students can regain focus, reduce stress levels and transition back to their instructional day.

“It really does give them confidence,” social worker Joanne Waters added. “They have a place to go to gather their thoughts.”

Calm Corner will be an evolving space, as plans are in the works to add a mural that will be created by Massapequa High School art students.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, and Massapequa Park Village Mayor Danny Pearl hosted a memorial candlelight vigil to pay tribute to fallen NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller, who was tragically murdered in the line of duty. Thousands of residents gathered to honor Officer Diller’s bravery and valor alongside members of his family, New York City Police

“Our hearts are heavy as we honor the memory of Officer Jonathan Diller, a true hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our community and public safety,” said Supervisor Saladino. “His bravery and selflessness made him a model officer

to his brothers and sisters in law enforcement, who risk their lives each and every day to protect ours. In gathering as a community to join together in mourning, we pay tribute to Officer Diller’s courage and honor his memory. On behalf of my colleagues on the Town Board, I extend by deepest sympathies to Officer Diller’s family, friends and colleagues. His legacy of service will always be remembered.”

Adventureland has announced the details of its multi-year, five-phase $10 million redevelopment plan of Long Island’s most popular amusement park, as well as a new partnership with Catholic Health. This marks one of the biggest investment projects in the park’s 62-year history since the installation of the ride called ‘Turbulence’ in 2015, which cost $5 million.

The most visible and immediate change is the addition of two new rides for the upcoming 2024 season, which include the ‘Jr. Pirate Ship Ride’ and ‘Moon Chaser.’ The second phase involves the addition

of a first-of-its-kind custom-made ride called ‘Wave Twister,’ which is expected to open in time for the spring 2025 season. There are at least two more planned rides that are to be added over the next three phases. These will be the first new rides since the addition of the ‘FireBall’ in 2022, which was a $2 million investment.

Adventureland estimates that by the end of the fifth phase, there will be a 10% growth in employment to support the new ‘Legacy Corner’ section, which is expected to be completed in 2028.

Catholic Health

Partnership

Catholic Health is sponsoring the main entrance and the City Hall Building, which has now been renamed the Catholic Health Wellness Center. This area is home to ‘Guest Relations,’ ‘First Aid,’ and the ‘Lost and Found.’ Another addition is a blue line throughout Adventureland that will direct guests from anywhere in the park to the Catholic Health Wellness Center. Catholic Health will also have a presence in the park during familyfriendly events like the ‘Egg Scramble’ and ‘Pumpkin Park’. Catholic Health will

also feature a variety of health-focused educational programs for park guests throughout the season.

Legacy Corner

A large part of the investment will be the creation of the ‘Legacy Corner,’ which will be on the front southeast side of the park about a little over an acre in size. In addition to at least four new rides, brand-new concession stands, restrooms, and other amenities will be constructed. Annually, Adventureland hires over 650 part-time employees. The full five-phase project is expected to be completed by 2028.

Retired Rides

In the weeks leading up to its 2024 season opening, Adventureland announced the retirement of the ‘Log Flume,’ ‘Pirate Ship’ ride and ‘Spinning Cars’ to make way for new rides.

New Rides

The ‘Jr. Pirate Ship’ ride is geared towards—but not limited to—children who are from 5-to-8 years old. It is similar to the larger scale ‘Pirate Ship’ ride which was recently removed to make room for the ‘Moon Chaser.’ The ‘Moon Chaser’ is a 45' tall galaxy-themed thrill ride which spins, twists, dips, and inverts riders. This ride is unique

because it is currently the only one in the park that goes upside down. This ride is geared towards children who are 11 years old or older. The second phase will introduce the new ride— ‘Wave Twister.’ This is a first-of-its-kind ride that was custom built for Adventureland. The ‘Wave Twister’ is a family ride. It was made in Switzerland by RES Rides.

The park will be open during weekends and holidays throughout the spring. For more details, visit https://adventureland. us/.
