Town Announces Environmental Poster Contest For 4th Grade Students

To raise awareness on the impact of trees in our communities, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced the return of the Town’s Environmental Poster Contest, open to all 4th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster showcasing the importance of trees in preserving our environment, with a theme of ‘Trees for Tomorrow.’

“This poster contest presents a great opportunity to

bring environmental awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting Mother Nature and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino. Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of the essential role of trees in our lives and may consider these key facts in their design:

• Oxygen Production: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, ensuring clean air. Did you know? 100 trees remove 53 tons of carbon dioxide and 430 pounds of other air pollutants per year.

• Air and Water Purification: Trees cleanse the air and water, promoting a healthier environment.

• Shade and Cooling: Trees provide shade, cooling our neighborhoods naturally.

• Wildlife Habitat: Trees offer food and homes for various wildlife, contributing to biodiversity.

• Health Benefits: Trees encourage outdoor activities, promoting physical well-being. Submissions should be made on poster paper (no larger than 12”x18”). No edible items should be used on the poster. The top

three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter.

“This contest is being co-sponsored by Friends of the Bay and The Waterfront Center, two organizations we proudly partner with throughout the year to help our efforts in protecting and preserving the environment,” said Councilwoman Johnson.

“I hope all fourth-grade students join us in this year’s program and take advantage of the great opportunity to become more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our environment.”

Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, a $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a tree planted at the winning student’s school for Arbor Day, a nautical trivia game and Friends of the Bay apparel. Second and third place winners will also receive a gift certificate to The Waterfront Center and have a tree planted in their school district. Submission deadline for the contest is Friday, March 29th,

with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22nd.

Along with their poster submission, students must include an entry form, which is available at www.oysterbaytown. com/postercontest. Mail or email posters to the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources, Attn: Poster Contest, 29 Spring Street, Oyster Bay NY, 11771. Entries can also be emailed to environmental@ oysterbay-ny.gov with the subject line ‘2024 Poster Contest.’ Visit www.oysterbaytown. com/postercontest for more details.

Massapequa H.S. Senior Honored For Eagle Scout Project

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and his colleagues on the Town Board recently recognized Massapequa High School senior and prospective Eagle Scout, Carly Madden. Carly, a member of Boy Scouts Troop 186, partnered with the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources to construct protective nest cage structures for

northern diamondback terrapin turtles at Centre Island Beach for her Eagle Scout project.

“With March being Women’s History Month, it is important to note that Carly is a trailblazer who will soon earn the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Efforts like Carly’s have helped save this species of terrapin

turtles, which neared extinction in the early 1990’s.”

Carly also collaborated with Friends of the Bay and the Seatuck Environmental Association to complete her project, successfully fundraising for necessary supplies and creating educational signage for the entrance to the turtle conservation area at Centre Island.

Insurance Tips And Information

Article provided by Ken Marcus and Mitchell Barber

Sudden and Accidental You have damage to your home. You don’t want to file a useless claim. How do you differentiate between a valid claim and one which will embarrass you?

To be covered under insurance the damage should be ‘sudden and accidental.’ Always ask yourself, if the damage was ‘sudden and accidental,’ These are the words which help you determine if the damage is caused by poor maintenance or if it is an insurable loss.

If your roof leaks after a severe storm, do you file a claim? Do you have a new roof? Yes. File the claim. Have you been picking up little pieces of roofing tile from the driveway for the last few summers? The roof is old and in disrepair. You have failed to maintain the roof. The water damage is not sudden and accidental. Don‘t bother filing. Get your roof repaired.

Sudden and Accidental. These are the key terms. Still unsure if you’re covered? Call your agent.

After receiving a copy of the CEC CCBHC (Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic) Veterans Services flyer from a friend, family members of a U.S. Navy veteran had walked into the CEC Health Care Center in Glen Cove seeking guidance and resources to help their loved one. They were able to meet with the CCBHC Director as well as the CCBHC Veterans Case Manager, both of whom are also veterans, and explained that their brother was living with a parent who had passed away. Their brother had no income and no financial means to maintain the property, the house was without heat or utilities and had fallen into disrepair. He started to experience anxiety and depression about his living

situation and turned to alcohol to help, however, he was reluctant to accept any kind of assistance.

The Case Manager made plans to visit him the next day at the house, and when they arrived he was attempting to repair water pipes that had burst from the freezing temperatures. He declined any immediate assistance, but indicated that he would reach out when he was ready to receive help.

In the interim, the CEC CCBHC Director reached out to the United Veterans Beacon House, which is an agency that provides shelter and housing to Long Island Veterans. The Beacon House staff explained their intake procedures and indicated that they had available capacity. The CCBHC Director

reached out to the veteran and his family members to explain that veteran housing services were available, but although the veteran was appreciative of the efforts, he still preferred to try to remain in the home.

The CEC CCBHC Veterans Case Manager continued to stay in touch with both he and his family members, and weeks later she heard that he was willing to take her up on the housing offer. After meeting at a local library to begin the intake process, later that same day the veteran was transported to the veterans shelter program.

He is now on the road to recovery and experiencing the true benefits of receiving help. If you or someone you love is looking for help too, please call (516) 622-

Easter Sunday Mass Celebrations

Celebrations of Easter Sunday Mass are known for their joyous nature regardless of where Christians happen to be. But few, if any, celebrations of Mass can match the scope of the celebration in St.

Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the public celebration to be canceled in 2020 and 2021, but it returned in 2022. A sizable number of celebrants returned along with it, as estimates

suggested around 50,000 people were on hand to celebrate Easter Sunday Mass on the plaza directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica on April 17, 2022. Pope Francis led the Mass, which was concelebrated with 280 priests, 25 bishops and 23 cardinals. But the crowd attending Mass was just the beginning, as Pope Francis later delivered his Urbi et Orbi benediction, a papal address and apostolic blessing the pope delivers on solemn occasions, from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica before an estimated crowd of 100,000.

Town Officials & D.A. Demand Stronger State Laws To Crackdown On Drug Dealers & Fentanyl

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board took decisive action to address the opioid crisis and combat the proliferation of deadly substances in New York State and across the region. Recognizing the urgent need for change, the Town Board passed an official resolution in support of Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney’s efforts to amend

New York State laws related to deadly substances such as fentanyl and xylazine.

“As the opioid crisis continues to devastate families across our nation and in our community, with fatalities increasing across all communities and among all people, it is imperative that we take decisive action to save lives,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Oyster Bay Town Board and I

are proud to support the Suffolk County District Attorney’s demands to amend state laws to increase punishment for drug dealers and ensure victims get the support they deserve. Together, we are sending a clear message that those who peddle deadly poison will be held accountable for their actions.”

Under current New York State law, individuals

The Town of Oyster Bay resolution approved today formally declares the Town Board’s support for DA Tierney’s advocacy efforts to amend state law relating to these deadly substances and recognizes that drug dealers who peddle this poison are, in fact, dealing death to our residents.

A crowd upwards of 350 people enthusiastically cheered on the Massapequa High School Ames Campus Challenger basketball team on March 7 and also honored a beloved student.

It was the final game of the season for the ninth grade players who hit the court against neighboring Amityville.

Proudly donning their

blue and gold uniforms, the Chiefs drew loud applause with each basket.

An estimated 180 students attended, along with scores of teachers, support staff, administrators, board of education trustees, parents and community members.

“The turnout is incredible,” said Challenger coach Salvatore Calderone. “We’re a great

community here and this shows that.”

The game was played in honor of Fallon Brown, a fifth grade student at Unqua Elementary School who passed away in early February. All money raised from the game was donated to Gigi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome achievement center, with a Long Island location in Patchogue.

There were raffle baskets donated by the National Junior Honor Society, as well as baked goods and 3D-printed yellow bursts with Fallon’s initials for sale.

The basketball players were joined on the sideline by their buddies, who have provided tremendous support and encouragement

throughout the five-game season. The Challenger cheerleaders also helped keep the crowd energized.

Before the game, there was a three-point shooting contest, with Michael Lucchi winning the student portion and Superintendent Dr. William Brennan crowned the hoops champion of the staff. Ninth grader
