Art teacher Ellen Cervone draws inspiration from her past life as a pizzeria owner to help her students develop their artistic abilities at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

Third-graders recently completed their pizza color wheels, a project designed to help them understand primary and secondary colors. Each student drew a large circle, and then divided it up into six slices, filling the alternating ones with red, yellow and blue paint.

Ms. Cervone demonstrated how to mix those colors to create orange, green and violet. Students then created the secondary colors on their own and filled in the slices in

Oceans of Knowledge The Marine Science Club from Massapequa High School finished in the top half of schools at the regional round for New York State Bay Scallop Bowl. The 19th annual event was held at Stony Brook University on Feb. 2, with Massapequa earning a sixth-place finish.

The team consisted of seniors Ryan Cassano and Vincent Migliore, and juniors Ashley Bressingham and Mike Liebow. Mike, the only returning member from last year’s team, served as captain, They were advised

by science teacher Gregory Kwas.

The Scallop Bowl tested knowledge of oceanography.

The purpose of the competition is to raise awareness about the oceans and coastal resources. Early rounds included a series of toss-up questions in a Jeopardystyle format. As the competition progressed, so did the difficulty, as teams had to analyze maps, diagrams and other documents to provide written responses.

All four students from Massapequa are

enrolled in the Introduction to Oceanography course, a science elective offered in partnership with Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences.

They have been preparing for the competition since the beginning of the school year.

“I really enjoyed the oceanography experience because I love the subject,” Ryan said. “It was great to apply my knowledge in competition.”

Birthday Wishes of Long Island began having parties in only one shelter. Today they work with 80 shelters/transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and each month they give more than 120 children a birthday celebration!

Every birthday child receives supplies to have a party with all the children that live in the shelter such as; juice boxes, cake or cupcakes, candles, decorations, paper goods and a wonderful bag of presents to open!

Birthday Wishes serves children ages 1-19.

There a many ways the public can get involved with Birthday Wishes of Long Island!

One way is to attend or sponsor their 2nd annual Food, Wine, & Wishes Event on March 20th at Appliance World of Huntington, located at 414 New York Ave. There will be wonderful raffle prizes and food tastings.

Additionally, Birthday Wishes is looking for people to volunteer their time as drivers or party coordinators. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: The Mercy Inn ~ Wyandanch The Mercy Inn is a wonderful soup kitchen, located at 17 South 20th Street in Wyandanch. They serve hot meals from 12-1PM Monday-Friday and they also prepare a take home bag for each of their guests, consisting of two sandwhiches, a drink and a snack. No one every leaves their soup kitchen hungry.

I Miss You Friend I am suddenly struck with a memory of an old friend who passed away in 2007 from Cystic Fibrosis. She took up residence at the forefront of my mind just as I had the thought, “Okay, time to write this week’s column.”

I met Brenna in 1991 at a theatre arts summer camp in upstate New York. Five of us girls shared a dorm that summer, and one of my roommates was an Irish Catholic girl from New Hampshire, named Brenna. We were the same age and both loved acting and the arts, but culturally we were worlds apart. I, a Jewish girl from Long Island with olive skin and dark curly hair, was fascinated with her strawberry blonde pin straight hair, bright green eyes and rosy complexion.

She also had a husky-yet-feminine voice (think vintage Kathleen Turner). Brenna was a true force of nature; the kind of person you never forget once she’s touched your life. Our friendship developed at summer camp but lasted for years afterwards. I made trips to visit her and her family in New Hampshire and she made a

couple of trips to New York City where we would go to places like FAO Schwartz, her favorite Irish pub and St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Brenna was born with Cystic Fibrosis (or CF, as it is known in the Cystic Fibrosis community), but she was so dynamically alive that I couldn’t conceive of her succumbing to her illness. She never let her disease define or diminish her. In fact, shortly after marrying at the age of twenty-five she wanted to have a baby. Brenna’s doctor warned her against it. I’ll never forget her recounting the story to me after she’d given birth to her son, Harrison. “My doctors said, ‘there’s no way you’re going to be able to get through nine months of pregnancy and childbirth,’ and I said, ‘oh, no? watch me!’” That was Brenna.

She knew she was on limited time, and therefore she was determined to live her life with zest, and to make every day count. At some point she and I lost touch, and in 2012 I decided to Google my old friend to reconnect. What I came across

was a memorial website set up in her honor. What I hadn’t known throughout our friendship (or perhaps hadn’t wanted to) was that the life expectancy for CF patients is typically 30 years.

Brenna had lived to the age of 32.

I am in touch with Brenna’s sister, Meghan, and her widower, Jason, to this day. I get to watch Brenna’s son grow up through Facebook photos and videos as he is surrounded by loving extended family.

Beyond that, I love to read and re-read Brenna’s favorite poem, The Station, by Robert J. Hastings. It reminds me so much of her. Here is my favorite passage from that poem: “So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, swim more rivers, climb more mountains, kiss more babies, count more stars. Laugh more and cry less. Go barefoot oftener.

Eat more ice cream. Ride more merry-go-rounds. Watch more sunsets. Life must be lived as we go along. The Station will come soon enough.”

Thai Noodle Salad with Peanut Sauce

A chef by profession, Carolyn S. of Hicksville is always playing in her kitchen, figuring out how to whip up healthier versions of some of her exotic, Asian-fusion favorites.

2 large carrots, spiral sliced 1 red bell pepper, spiral sliced 1/4 cup green onions, diced chopped peanuts as a garnish Canola vegetable oil on-hand

"I make the most insane Thai Noodle Salad with Peanut Sauce, hold the pasta!" exclaims Carolyn. You'll need to invest in a Veggie Spiralizer tool to create pasta-like veggies for this dish," she explains. Carolyn got her's from PamperedChef.com.

Preparation Add garlic, ginger, peanut butter, lime juice and zest, soy sauce and red pepper flakes to a small bowl and mix together. To a large frying pan, add your canola oil on high heat. Add zucchini, carrots and bell peppers to the pan, and cook until just wilted, 3-4 minutes, stirring occassionally.

What You Will Need 1 clove garlic minced Add in chicken, sauce, and green 2 tsps fresh ginger minced onions and toss together until all are 4 tbps peanut butter 1 lime, zested and juiced warmed through. Garnish with peanuts 2 tbps soy sauce and wedges of lime, if desired. Serve 1/4 tsps red pepper flakes and Enjoy!

Exploring Inner Beauty character traits that make them beautiful followed by a talk about their unique qualities on the second day.

The program concluded with workshop on giving and receiving compliments.

The girls learned how to build each other up through kindness and filled each other’s compliment boxes.

Beautiful Me is a program run by the Hance Family Foundation in honor of three young girls who died in a tragic car accident, Emma, Alyson and Katie Hance. It has been held at more than 700 schools since its inception and this was the first time at Berner.

Ms. Ostapow said that the purpose of Beautiful Me

is to help female students increase their self-esteem and become more confident and comfortable in their interactions with others.

She noted that the handson activities helped the girls reflect on their many positive characteristics, and hopefully they all left the program feeling good about themselves.

“In addressing mental health with our students, it’s important that we give them positive life skills,” added Ms. Boulukos.

“That includes accepting compliments, liking who they are and having a positive self-image. These are the ideas that this program brings to light for them.”

The self-esteem building program Beautiful Me came to Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, as sixth-grade girls took part in workshops during their physical education classes from February 25th through March 6th.

Each student attended three sessions, which were facilitated by trained Berner staff members including physical education and health teachers Erin Kollar, Katie McCabe and Amanda Ostapow, social worker Marisa Boulukos, and psychologists Kim Dempsey, Tracy Johnson and Heather Rowland.

It doesn’t take a fancy instrument to make music, fifth-graders recently learned at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

To better understand how sound is produced, the students were tasked with finding materials around the their homes to create functional musical THE SOUND OF MUSIC - McKenna Elementary School general music teacher instruments. Several students made guitars out of cardboard and rubber bands, while others used plastic bottles and rice to make maracas.

Students used their Chromebooks to research different instruments.

Bellon said that the project help students expand their creativity. Upon completion, each child had to play a short melody or rhythmic pattern.
