The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Did you know this non-profit runs a Veterans Initiative™? Through this initiative they place service dogs with veterans. Canine Companions’ expertly trained service dogs can perform physical tasks to enhance independence including opening doors, picking up prosthetics and alerting a veteran with hearing loss to important sounds in their environment.

With the increase in veterans facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Canine Companions launched a program in 2018 to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD. Dogs are trained to identify each veteran’s unique stressors and perform tasks that directly disrupt escalation of symptoms, thus enhancing their quality of life. The dog supports their handler in crowded public situations by creating barriers and distance that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD. Additional tasks such as nightmare interruption, turning on lights and retrieving items are taught to support veterans’ daily lives.

“When I see a veteran with a Canine Companions service dog, it still gives me goosebumps,” said Colonel E. David Woycik Jr., a highly decorated retired Army O cer and an active Canine Companions Board Member. “I see the satisfaction these veterans get...

the fulfillment of their lives through these dogs. The service dogs are not just partners, they are their right hand, their left hand, their legs and more. We can’t pay the veterans back enough, and I’m proud to be part of an organization serving them.” Mr. Woycik helped organize a Veterans Day event, Salute Independence , which awards local veterans who continue to serve their communities.

Thanks to his tireless work, this annual event has raised more than $500,000 in total so far to support the organization’s Veterans Initiative™.

Volunteers are warmly welcomed in other capacities as well, such as Front Desk Reception, General O ce Support, Puppy Transporter and Event Support, amongst other fields. Did You Know?

As more people work remotely, electricians and safety advocates are warning that various missteps may be putting people at unnecessary risk of fire and other unsafe conditions. Electrical equipment is necessary to run home offices just like it is traditional offices. Some people may find they have a shortage of electrical outlets to power their devices, and as a result they may turn to

extension cords or power strips. While that may seem like an easy fix, it is easy to inadvertently overload outlets and circuits by connecting more than one power strip or extension cord together in a practice known as “daisy chaining.”

According to the U.S. Office of Compliance, using a daisy chain in the workplace violates the National Electrical Code as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s

rules. While it may not break code at home, overloading any outlets increases risk for fire. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Overload causes products to overheat, and that can spark fires in the power cords themselves or inside the wall where electrical lines are hidden.

Spring is almost here. January seemed like it had 49 days in it, and February went by pretty fast, and now we are in March. St Paddy’s Day will be here soon, Lacrosse and Baseball have already started, and we had our snowfall for the last days of February. Before you know it, we will have the Chamber’s Community Street Festival, and it will be summer.

Many big events are happening this spring. The Chamber will be participating in two fundraising walks at Marjorie Post Park - one for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the other for the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center. These will be great events for you to showcase your business and help some worthwhile causes. We will also be sponsoring a Taste of the Town event with local restaurants (and we have some of the best right here in the Massapequas!) This will serve as a fundraiser for the Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra. The Chamber and many of our members are also sponsoring a free lifejacket giveaway for children at John J. Burns Park. I want to take this time to highlight that this is the 75th year of the Chamber of Commerce of the Massapequas. Because of the great leadership that I have followed, and the teamwork of our Chamber members and Board, we have not only survived 75 years - including the COVID shutdown - but we have thrived and exceeded over 250 members. In this 75th year and beyond, we will continue to provide rst-class education to local businesses, networking opportunities to meet potential referral partners, and ways for you to show off your business to the public.

This milestone wouldn’t have happened without the continued dedication of our Past Presidents - many of whom have stayed on our Board to ensure that their passion for giving back to the community and helping fellow business owners continues. Our Past Presidents who are still active on the Board include Robert R. Barrett, Denis Monette, Gary Slavin, Anthony Ventiera, Keith Wilson - and the unstoppable Patricia Orzano.

Patty is the heart and soul of the Chamber. For those of you who don’t know Patty, she owned the 7-Eleven on Merrick Road in Massapequa for over 30 years with her late husband Richard. She is our historian, chief fundraiser, and the Chamber mom. Patty makes sure that the Chamber stays true to our mission, gives back to the community, and keeps our traditions alive while we adapt to the modern world.

It is people like Patty who keep our community looking nice, with the many beauti cation projects that she helps lead as part of her many roles in our Chamber. The banners that you see on the telephone poles throughout Massapequa were her idea, and she has maintained them over the years, and takes responsibility for the fundraising to make sure they are in good condition and then changed out for the holiday season.

Every year, Patty leads a dedicated team of volunteers to make sure our Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony is funded. She also heads up the Toys for Tots Drive which is one of the largest on Long Island in cooperation with the 7-Eleven franchisees and company. Patty was named the Grand Marshal of the 2022 Massapequa Street Festival based on her outstanding contributions to this community, and the countless hours she volunteers to the Chamber and other organizations because of her love for the Massapequas. This message is dedicated to her, as she continues to ght her battle with cancer, while still doing all of these things mentioned above. We are always looking for more people to help with any of these projects, and you don’t have to be a Board Member to serve. The reward of giving back to the community will be very ful lling, and if Patty can do all of this while she is ghting the battle of her life - I hope we can get a few people to give up a few hours of their month to give her a hand.

Dune Day At TOBAY Beach

Residents who love visiting the beach and want to help protect the shoreline can join Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board at the Towns’ annual Dune Day, scheduled for Saturday, March 25th at TOBAY Beach. The event begins at 10 a.m. by the dunes at TOBAY.

Long Island Elite Selects Paws Of War As 2023 Charity Partner

Long Island Elite, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering the growth and development of local Long Island business professionals and emerging regional leaders, has announced they have selected Nesconset-based Paws of War as its 2023 charity partner. The announcement came at Long Island Elite’s first meeting of the year at The Heritage Club in Farmingdale.

Paws of War is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to train and place service animals and companion dogs to support and provide independence to U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional and physical effects of war. The non-profit also provides animal rescue for U.S. troops who have befriended an animal while serving overseas. The organization also serves as a community center where veterans and first responders come together daily to build bonds and support each other.

The funds raised by Long Island Elite in 2023 will give Paws of War additional resources to further its mission of “helping

both ends of the leash” by providing services to veterans, first responders and their service or companion animals. These activities will support the mental wellbeing of individuals in Paws of War programs, giving back to the heroes who have sacrificed so much for this country. Having service or companion animals has proven to be an effective way to enhance mental wellbeing and reduce veteran suicides. LIE volunteers and funds raised will also assist in rescuing dogs and cats and pairing them with local heroes in the community.

“This partnership between Long Island Elite and Paws of War will enhance the lives of veterans and lead to numerous dogs find their forever homes. We will also raise awareness in our community about Paws of War’s important mission. Our members will see first-hand the challenges that veterans and first responders face, especially those experiencing the effects of PTSD and the positive impact dogs and cats will provide. As a U.S. Marine veteran, I personally understand the challenges and hardships

that our veterans and first responders face every day,” said Frank Morizio, Jr, Long Island Elite President.

During the partnership year, members of Long Island Elite will volunteer their time at Paws of War’s events where they will learn more about the organization, including the cost of training service animals, the challenges and issues related to abandoned and mistreated animals, animal adoption and rescue and the importance of veterans and first responders gathering to share their stories, comradery and mutual support.

Many veterans and first responders are struggling with PSTD and other mental health challenges. The support and funds that LIE will provide to us will go toward improving the lives of these heroes and at the same time, find homes for so many dogs that need them,” said Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War.

For over 20 years, Long Island Elite members have supported many not-forprofits. The organization has raised over $1 million dollars for charities and charity partners, including United Cerebral Palsy, ACLD, SIBSPlace, The Safe

The Red Cross encourages prospective donors to eat healthy foods that are rich in iron and high in vitamin C, as doing so can increase their chances of being accepted as blood donors and can aid in their recoveries after donating.

Assemblyman Durso Announces

Pet Food Drive In Partnership With Baxter’s Pet Pantry & Long Island Cares

Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park) is inviting the community to participate in his Annual Pet Food Drive to help families keep their pets out of shelters and remain at home where they belong. The pet food drive will take place through Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

Assemblyman Durso is asking community members and organizations to kindly donate unopened bags of dog and cat food, canned pet food and pet supplies. All items

will be donated to Baxter’s Pet Pantry, operated by Long Island Cares, which provides free pet food

and pet supplies to petowning families in need throughout Long Island.

“Our pets offer us unconditional love and companionship. However, for families on a tight budget, it can be a struggle to afford these extra costs,” said Durso.

“Our annual pet food drive keeps pets healthy, safe,

and at home with their family. I invite everyone to join our efforts to help our fury friends in need. Thank you for your continued support!” Donations can be dropped off at his district office located at 512 Park Boulevard in Massapequa Park or at various other locations throughout Nassau and

Nassau County Bar Association Charitable Arm Hosts Day of Carnival Themed Fun for Over 200 Local Children

On Thursday, February 23, 2023, more than 200 deserving children ages 5-12 from local Nassau County organizations were treated to a day of carnival games, sweet snacks like snow cones and cotton candy, a pizza truck, and fun, including games and dancing, and a special visit from Nassau County Administrative Judge Hon. Vito M. DeStefano, at the 33rd Annual Children’s Festival.

Also in attendance were celebrity mascots including Mr. Met from the New York Mets, Sparky the Dragon from the New York Islanders, and QuackerJack from the Long Island Ducks. The Children’s Festival is held annually, courtesy of volunteer attorneys and judges of the Nassau County Bar Association’s charitable arm, the WE CARE Fund, with a mission

to instill positive attitudes and relationships with the local legal community and provide a fun activity during school winter break.

The WE CARE Fund, a part of the Nassau Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Nassau County Bar Association (NCBA), receives contributions from the Nassau County legal community and local businesses. Conceived by NCBA Past President Stephen Gassman as a vehicle for the organized Bar to use its resources to improve the quality of life for those in need and nurtured by the tireless efforts of lawyers and judges WE CARE has raised over $5 million to assist more than 100 charitable organizations in Nassau County.
