Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night).

People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Department of Community and Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division (CAPA) will be once again offering exciting cultural enrichment programs for the spring 2020 season, and registration for all applications is now open.

“I am pleased to announce that the Town’s Cultural Enrichment Program will return once again this spring, as these enrichment programs offer residents the opportunity to develop a new skill while having fun in the process,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Whether you’re an emerging artist or a resident looking for a new hobby, these classes offer a wonderful opportunity to broaden your horizons, and provide not only education but enjoyment as well.”

Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event.

This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole.

This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade.

Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness.

These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program.

The upcoming spring season

for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet!

Capping a remarkable season in this championship run, the Girls Volleyball Team, along with members of the Oyster Bay High School coaching staff and administration, were presented with a commemorative sign to display at their school, as

FUNDRAISER FOR N. MASSAPEQUA FIRE DEPARTMENT - Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier recently hosted a fundraiser for the North Massapequa Fire Department at her local small business, Dairy Queen Grill & Chill in Massapequa. On Christmas morning, members of the North Massapequa Fire Department were awakened to a fire in their own Fire Headquarters, which ultimately devastated it, destroying four pieces of fire equipment, substantial damage to the truck bay, and smoke and water damage to the entire building. As part of the fundraiser held at Councilwoman Maier’s small business, Dairy Queen Chill & Grill in Massapequa, 25% of the proceeds for the day were donated towards supporting the department’s recovery after this devastating fire, to help them rebuild so they can continue to do the amazing job they do to keep residents safe. Councilwoman Maier was joined by countless residents who came out to support the cause throughout the day, including members of the North Massapequa Fire Department, Town Councilman Steve Labriola, Town Councilman Tom Hand, Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Receiver of CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM HONORED - Saladino and Town Board honor Oyster Bay Lady Baymen Girls Volleyball 2019 County Class C Championship Team.

The World Health Organization says that doctors diagnose nearly 10 million new cases of dementia each year. When the brain is working efficiently, it may be less prone to some of the issues that can cause a decline in memory and brain function. Research published in the journal Neurology found frequent brain exercise through reading lowered mental decline by 32 percent.

Of course, the benefits of reading extend beyond the physical.

Literary fiction can help people be more empathetic. Getting lost in a book and the characters’ stories makes others more relatable.

Reading has the potential to help a person understand what people are thinking, offers research published in the journal Science.

Picking up a good book also can help a person gain knowledge of new cultures, ideas and history and even improve vocabulary.

Picking up a newspaper or magazine, joining a book club or reading with children are just a few of the many ways to improve the mind through reading.

After nine rounds of increasingly challenging questions about the nation and the world, two finalists emerged in the Geography Bee on Jan. 17 at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. The annual event, sponsored by National Geographic, started with 21 sixth, seventh and eighth graders who were top scorers on written geography bees taken in their social studies classes.

The championship round featured eighth graders

Ken Zheng and Kailey Burns. Ken emerged as the winner and will take a qualifying test for a chance to represent the district at the state geography bee in Albany. Sixth grader Brennan Kilkenny finished in third place.

Questions tested participants on both United States and world geography. Rounds had different formats including individual questions for students, as well as common questions supported with photo and

map handouts.

National Geographic’s GeoBee, which was developed in 1989, is designed to inspire and reward students for their curiosity about the world.

Questions not only cover geography but also ancient and world civilizations, cultures and physical features. Social studies teachers Maria Casale, Bill Chlystun and Kim Simpson coordinated Berner’s geography bee.

Random Acts of Kindness Day Town Councilwoman Laura L. Maier and the Town Board proclaimed ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ in the Town of Oyster Bay as Monday, February 17th, a nationallyrecognized holiday.

As part of this Random Acts of Kindness initiative, the Councilwoman recognized deserving individuals who made a difference in their communities.

“With people often rushing through their daily schedules, many busy with work and family obligations, it’s easy to forget that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a huge difference,” said Councilwoman Maier.

“Something as simple as paying a positive compliment, telling someone how you feel about them or saying ‘thank you’ can change somebody’s day for the better. We should all strive to be more kind in our everyday lives.”

The Councilwoman recognized Massapequa Park resident Amy Recco, together with Massapequa residents Michael Dell’Anno and Gregg Thomas, for their mutual efforts to collect over 1,000 toys for Cohen Children’s Medical

Center through the Mighty Mason’s Warriors Initiative.

“Their effort was randomly and kindly put together after they learned that my three-year-old son, Mason, was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia,” Councilwoman Maier added. “Mason has battled this disease like a true warrior, and before the holidays, he expressed a desire to hand out toys to his fellow warriors at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Thanks to these kind-hearted residents, this became possible.”

The Councilwoman and Councilman Lou Imbroto further recognized Plainview resident Jay Asparro, who ran 100 miles over 24 hours in November and raised nearly $100,000 for the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center. Asparro took on the initiative in memory of his late grandmother, Ann Asparro, who died of Alzheimer’s.

“Not only is this an incredible athletic accomplishment, it is also an inspirational humanitarian achievement,” said Councilman Imbroto, noting that the national ‘Random Acts of Kindness

Day’ has gained popularity in recent years as many schools, businesses and communities have joined in the initiative.

“Our children are taught kindness in schools, and sometimes we adults need to be reminded that simple positive actions can go a long way,” Councilman Imbroto added. “The goal here is to create a ripple effect and inspire others.

Hopefully by providing kindness to others, they will be inspired to do the same.”

2020 Men’s Summer Softball Night League Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto recently announced that registration is currently ongoing for the Town’s Men’s Summer Softball Night League, with games scheduled to begin in May 2020. Daniel, who regularly attends animal rights events and rallies in New York City, recently started his non-profit organization, Liberation NYC. His organization is preparing for its inaugural conference in April, which is expected to draw 300 to 400 people and will include guest speakers and educational workshops. He said that goal is to educate people about animal rights.

The change is made at the same absolute time across all time zones respective to Greenwich Mean Time, which also is known as Universal Time. One reason DST is still

practiced in many areas of the world is to push an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening and make better use of this daylight. There are various origin stories linked to DST, including one that

involves Benjamin Franklin. DST also has been touted as a way to save resources during times of war or as a means to helping farmers be more prosperous.

However, despite the many proclaimed

benefits of DST, there are many detractors who insist that there are no perceived benefits. Some of these DST naysayers say switching the clocks twice a year can negatively affect the body’s natural

circadian rhythm.

Various efforts both domestically and abroad have been instituted to abolish DST, but as of 2020, it remains on the calendar.
