Valentine, which was written on February 14, 1779 in Oyster Bay. The story of America’s first Valentine is a proud piece of Oyster Bay history which dates back to the time
of the Revolutionary War, as British troops occupied Long Island homes. During the height of the American Revolutionary War, love improbably blossomed between Lt. Col Simcoe
and a young patriot named Sally Townsend as the Townsend property served as a headquarters for a regiment of 300 British troops. Lt. Col. Simcoe presented Sally with a
poem he wrote asking her to be his Valentine, and his famous poem, entitled ‘Will You Be My Valentine,’ became the first documented written Valentine in America.

Massapequa High School senior Kelly Mullooly returned to her roots for her Girl Scout Gold Award project, leading a composting project for third graders at Birch Lane Elementary School. During a pair of presentations in January, Kelly taught students about the positive effects of waste reduction on the environment, then helped them start their own compost bins. Kelly’s days in the scouts started when she was a kindergartner at Birch Lane. In fifth grade, her troop did a “No Trash Tuesdays” project for their Bronze Award which encouraged the use of
reusable containers for lunch every Tuesday. By tracking the number of trash bags used during lunch every day, they determined it to be a success. “It was great to see that our efforts had truly made a difference,” Kelly said, “and I wanted to continue working on projects that had a similar goal of helping the environment.” For the Gold Award, which is the top honor in Girl Scouts, Kelly connected with Birch Lane Principal Stephen Aspetti and Magnet/STEAM teacher Kelsey Downey. Ms. Downey, a lifetime Girl Scout herself, became
Kelly’s mentor for the project. The “Kid Komposting” project began with an informative session on Jan. 16, in which she taught third graders about composting – what it is, what can and cannot be composted and how it helps the environment. Kelly returned on Jan. 25 and showed students how to make a composting bin. They were asked to bring in food scraps and an empty container from home, while Kelly provided soil. She guided the youngsters through the process. When they were done, students received completion certificates.
“I hope the lesson, along with that information, encourages a lot of families to give it a try and start their own compost pile at home,” Kelly said. Ms. Downey welcomed the opportunity to help a fellow Girl Scout with her community service project. She said that from the beginning, Kelly’s passion for composting and the environment were evident. “She understands that the earlier we begin to recognize and have a hands-on role in protecting our environment, the more likely we are to adopt these practices into our everyday lives,” Ms. Downey said.
“Kelly hopes that teaching the third graders about composting now is just a small step towards them becoming passionate about conservation and protecting our environment.” Ms. Downey added that she was proud to see Kelly’s planning and hard work come together. The third graders were engaged and excited throughout the project, particularly as they created their own compost bins to take home. Kelly, who belongs to Troop 2524, had to complete 80 hours of service related to her Gold Award project. That included writing her
proposal, designing the presentations and working with the third graders. She is grateful to Ms. Downey for her expertise as a teacher, which allowed Kelly to plan and implement a lesson relatable to third graders. In addition to her work with the Girl Scouts, Kelly is a varsity cheerleader for Massapequa High School and member of Students Against Destructive Decisions, the Chordettes vocal group and the National, Spanish and Tri-M Music honor societies. because of the wide variety of children’s books he has published for elementaryaged children, including picture and chapter books. “I liked the fact that he is both an author and an illustrator,” Ms. Schwen said.
“Many of my students have expressed their desire to write and illustrate their own books one day so I wanted to try to get an author who did both.” Mr. Yaccarino had gradelevel presentations in which he discussed his books and the publishing process, in addition to taking questions. With hard work and lots of practices, the Massapequa Softball Little League team had the chance to participate in the World Series Championship game in Greenville North Carolina that took place on August 13, 2023.
One of his greatest interests since 2008, is serving as a coach for the Massapequa International Little League team where he also sits on the board of directors. He became interested in 2008 when he played father-daughter tee-ball with his then 3-year-old daughter Jessica.
“Our team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back and took home the title of Little League World Series Champions, the team finished undefeated with 19 Wins and 0 Losses” Joe said “This was a major win for not only Massapequa but New York State as well. The game would be known as the first world series championship game to be won by any Little League softball team in New York State.

“Remain calm. They’re kids. They’re going to make mistakes. Everybody wants to win but you have to stay calm,” he said. He believes in core values such as respect for both the players and the coaches.
It just really is that special.”
Coach Joe has been a true helper to these kids as they have been to him. While they get good training and a respectful coach, he gets to give back to the community which he loves so much. “He’s not just a coach to these girls, he’s their friend,” Rios said. Now Joe says its back to reality and back to work changing people’s lifestyles in the form of selling homes throughout Long Island. While coaches get a lot of recognition for their strategies within games and practices, the parents get to see a lot on the sidelines that many people don’t always see. “Joe brought a little more light to heavy practices... Coach Joe was the guy who had fun with them and gave them a different perspective,” said Josie Rios, the parent of Ava Rios, who played on Joe’s 2023 World Series Team. “He coached our kids without a kid on the team and he still coaches for the local little league. The Long Island Pet Expo returns on March 2-3, 2024, with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family. The event returns to the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets. “The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs several similar events in the northeast. The 100+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves. Pets on leashes are always welcome, and several area rescue groups with adoptable pets will be on hand. Popular performers and presenters include Gail Mirabella and the Dynamo Dogs, Diana Frohman and her Beautiful Dancing Dogs, Schutzhund Demonstration by Maximum K9 Service, the Dog Lovers Days Lure Course, Rainforest Reptiles Shows, TICA Championship Cat Shows, Rabbit Hopping, the Long Island Dog Derby and more “We always have fun at these events, but we also are strong supporters of
responsible pet ownership and humane values when it comes to all issues involving animals and pets,” said Garetano. “We partner with several community organizations, shelters, veterinarians and other animal lovers educate and inform when it comes to best practices for training, feeding and all aspects of pet care.” Community and rescue organizations will be participating in the show where attendees can learn about pet adoptions as well as responsible ownership and care. Briana Neary Nets 1,000th Point For Massapequa Chiefs

It was a moment she will never forget. With her loved ones cheering from the stands, Massapequa High School senior Briana Neary scored her 1,000th career point as a member of the varsity basketball
team. The milestone happened on Feb. 6 in a home game against Freeport, coincidentally the same school she scored her first points against as a freshman. Briana has been
a four-year member of the varsity team and managed to reach and surpass the 1,000-point mark despite her ninth grade season being shortened by the pandemic. It was the fourth
quarter of the game when she scored the 1,000th point, and her teammates immediately rushed onto the court to celebrate. “I had a huge support system there in my family and friends,” Briana said. “I was so lucky to have that moment.” Briana has been playing basketball since she was 4 years old and joined the CYO program at St. Rose of Lima Church, with her father as coach. She played with CYO through eighth grade, as well as two years for Berner Middle School before making the jump to varsity. As a junior, she was the Conference Player of the Year, has been an All-County athlete twice
and this year was among Newsday’s Top 100 girls basketball players. This year will also be Briana’s third trip to the playoffs. “I love the excitement after a win or after a good play,” she said. “I love the energy and fast play. I love the connection with my teammates.” Even though she excels at basketball, she will actually continue her athletic career in college as a soccer player. Briana has also been a standout for the Chiefs girls soccer team, winning the Mike Clark Award as Nassau County’s most valuable player and was nominated as an All-American Athlete. She has committed to play
for Siena College, where she will major in biology. Free Mega Job Fair Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and The Workforce Partnership announce that a Mega Job Fair will take place on Thursday, February 22nd, at the Hicksville Community Center, 28 W. Carl Street, Hicksville. There is no charge for admission and parking is free. Doors open at 10:00am and the event runs until 1:00pm. Employers from across Long Island will be seeking candidates for positions including entry and middle management level, licensed professional, hospitality and food service industries, banking, staffing and individuals with technical and IT experience. “We’re proud to have helped thousands of residents find meaningful employment through our career center and private sector jobs fair,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Workforce Partnership
and Town of Oyster Bay are committed to helping residents find meaningful employment opportunities as well as assisting local businesses in recruiting qualified employees. This Mega Job Fair will connect private and public sector employers with job seekers.” The Town of Oyster Bay serves as administrator of The Workforce Partnership, a consortium of local governments funded by the Federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that provides free valuable resources to both employers and job seekers at Career Centers in Hicksville and Massapequa. These centers help train employees to meet the needs of the private sector, connecting qualified job seekers with employers, and by assisting applicants in accessing job opportunities. The Centers offer Resource Rooms,
which are equipped with state-of-the-art computer workstations, complete with Microsoft software and internet access. Additionally, these Centers offer residents access to job listings, resource materials, photocopiers, fax machines and telephones. The Centers provide employability and computer workshops, as well as career counselors who will guide residents through their job search. Computer workshops are taught on-site in modern computer labs. Residents can increase their marketability by updating or acquiring new computer skills at the Centers.
