Students ‘Caught’ Being Good

Rotational Arts Exhibit Program Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand invites residents to enjoy the Town’s 46th Annual Rotational Art Exhibit Program. The unique program integrates arts and community and allows local artists to display their work in local libraries, banks, government offices and local businesses on a monthly “rotational” basis.

“Through this program, local businesses around the Town help to spread a passion for the arts by joining in and supporting local artists. This provides business patrons with the pleasure of viewing artwork in a setting they normally wouldn’t,” stated Councilman Hand. “Local businesses that participate

in the Rotational Arts Exhibit program have a unique opportunity to position themselves at the intersection of industry and art, which ultimately benefits all involved. This program not only features the diverse works of new artists, but also some of the most accomplished artists from the area.”

While the 2020 schedule is set, the Town of Oyster Bay is already looking for new artists and businesses to participate in next year’s program. Beginning in the fall, novice and experienced artists alike will have a chance to see their artwork approved and entered into ‘rotation’ where it will be displayed throughout the Town of Oyster Bay in

2021.

The program is free for both artists and businesses.

A complete listing of display months and locations is printed in the program’s 2020 Exhibition Schedule which is available online at www.oysterbaytown. com under the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community and Youth Services. The values of good citizenship are important at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, where students are recognized for setting a positive example.

Each teacher selects two students per month who get to be featured on the McKenna Junior Leaders bulletin board.

Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said that the goal is to promote a positive culture in the building.

Among the values that students are recognized for are being caring and respectful, having courage, making good choices, showing courage, telling the truth and being a good friend.

When a student is chosen, his or her picture goes up on the bulletin along with a short write-up on a piece of heart-shaped paper. Ms. Ferraro said it is important to acknowledge publicly how they were

“caught” being good.

Fifth grader Alex Fischetti, a McKenna Junior Leader in January, said he makes it a priority to display good character because he sees himself as a role model for the younger students in the building, and wants to set a good example.

Kindergartner Maggie Sica said that she likes helping out others, and being nice to others make her feel good.

Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event.

This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole.

This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade.

Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness.

These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program.

The upcoming spring season

for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet!

How you can get involved: If you or someone you know would like to register for their spring program, you can!

Second place winner Jessica Renda, an eighth grader, drew a poster the featured a globe and ribbons formed by the flags of countries from all over the world. Eighth grader Yuvika Thapa’s design was a globe made up of

puzzle pieces of flags and international landmarks.

Their posters will be displayed at the festival, and they also received certificates and Amazon gift cards.

Polar Bear Plunge Benefit Fundraiser Sunday, March 8 Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces that the Town of Oyster Bay will serve as home to The Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County’s (CP Nassau) 16th Annual Polar Bear Plunge benefit fundraiser on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina in Oyster Bay, with festivities to begin at noon and the plunge at 1pm.

The Polar Bear Plunge festivities will include a DJ, free hot chocolate, coffee, tea, hot dogs, and soup. Raffles will be offered, and children will enjoy many other surprises including Star Wars characters and a dancing Polar Bear. An indoor assembly area will also be available. The

event will be held rain, snow or shine!

All proceeds will benefit the more than 1,800 children and adults with disabilities who participate in programs and receive services through the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County.

CP Nassau has been making a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities since 1948.

Berner Middle School students are doing an outstanding job promoting the Massapequa School District’s upcoming World Language Festival. There were more than 120 entries in the poster design contest and the winners were announced on Feb. 5.

Students designed posters based on the theme for the 16th annual event, “Languages Unite the World.”

Children are invited to participate in cultural activities organized by students in language classes at Massapequa High School, and the posters are hung throughout the six elementary schools to promote the festival.

The winning entry was created by seventh grader Sophia Moehringer, whose poster featured a drawing of a camera along with scenes representing the six languages offered in the district – American Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Mandarin

Lifeguard Employment Opportunities Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced today that the Parks Department is accepting applications from qualified, certified individuals interested in working at North Shore beaches this upcoming summer season.

“We invite responsible

and experienced lifeguards who are up to the challenge of protecting our residents while working at one of our beautiful beaches to apply now for this summer season,” said Councilwoman Walsh.

“Town lifeguards provide an invaluable service and have helped save countless

lives.”

Town lifeguards are hired for the summer season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Positions are available at Tappen Beach in Glen Head, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach in Bayville and at Centre

Island Beach.

“There are many benefits to working as a lifeguard at one of our beautiful beaches,” said Councilwoman Walsh.

“Having a summer job as a lifeguard helps shape confidence and selfesteem while learning the importance of teamwork

and building leadership skills!”

Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years old, possess a current Nassau County Grade 2 Lifeguard Certification and a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
