“PICK A READING PARTNER” WEEK - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined students at Birch Lane Elementary School in Massapequa Park to celebrate Pick A Reading Partner (PARP) Week, which unites people all around the globe around a shared love of reading and literacy. After reading aloud to Ms. Signorile’s Kindergarten class, Supervisor Saladino encouraged students to continue reading and writing throughout their lives and thanked the teachers and administration of Birch Lane Elementary School for promoting literary education for all students.

Students Have Lifesaving Knowledge Up Their Sleeves

It’s a skill they never hope they have to use, but 22 Massapequa High School students are well prepared if they come across a friend in alcohol distress. They are now part of the Red Watch Band, a group of high school and college students who have been given the knowledge, awareness and skills to prevent toxic drinking deaths.

Band members were recognized at a ceremony on Feb. 7 in the Ames Campus library, where they received completion certificates, red wristbands and wallet cards with emergency steps. Students from grades 9-12 were welcome to sign up for the program, which has been in Massapequa for more than a decade.

Advisers Kim Hession and Joanne Waters, the

social workers at the Ames and main campuses, respectively, commended the students for taking this necessary step to help their peers. They explained that Red Watch Band members know how to identify a potential alcohol overdose and how to intervene to get someone help.

Students completed four hours of training, beginning with an hour-and-a-half alcohol information course

with Ms. Waters and Ms. Hession. A two-and-ahalf hour lifesaving skills course, including CPR and AED training, was led by physical education and health teacher Michael LaBella.

Ninth grader Elena Walsh said she had taken a CPR class in the past, and decided to take part in the Red Watch Band program to expand her lifesaving skill set. Renee Colletti said

this training increased her knowledge about the risks of alcohol consumption and also has her prepared to help someone in need.

Senior Kayla Elfenbein began the training when she was in ninth grade, but it was interrupted by pandemic. She was pleased to have an opportunity to finish the course an officially join the Red Watch Band.

“It’s a good life skill to

have in case something happens,” she said.

Red Watch Band started at Stony Brook University about 15 years ago to combat the more than 1,800 yearly preventable deaths among collegeage students from alcohol-related causes.

The Massapequa School District offers the training to students in partnership with the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition.

2023 Ice Cream Truck Permit Opportunity For Belmont Lake, Heckscher, Hempstead Lake & Valley Stream State Parks

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation – Long Island Region, is accepting applications for ice cream truck opportunities at Belmont Lake, Heckscher, Hempstead Lake and Valley Stream State Parks for April 1st through November 30, 2023.

The fee is $750 per park. A separate fee should be paid for each park. Proof of insurance and health permits are required.

Black Tea Drinkers

A small study from researchers at University College London found that black tea drinkers had significantly lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol than non-tea drinkers within 50 minutes of experiencing a stress-inducing event. The study also found that black tea drinkers expressed themselves in a more relaxed way than non-tea drinkers within 50 minutes of a stressful experience.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Commissioner of Public Safety Justin McCaffrey honored Public Safety Officer Tyler Kelly, of Massapequa, as the Town’s “Employee of the Month” for February. Tyler has a great attitude and his extraordinary efforts ensure that operations in the Department of Public Safety are professionally handled, which was

perhaps best illustrated by his recent swift action while on patrol in North Massapequa.

Officer Kelly noticed a girl walking along North Broadway with no shoes and who appeared lost. He instinctively sensed something was wrong and contacted the Nassau County Police Department while remaining in sight of the girl until police responded. After

being checked by police department medics, the girl was determined to be developmentally disabled and was returned safely to her home. Public Safety Officer Kelly’s observance and attention to detail helped mitigate a potentially dangerous situation, and Supervisor Saladino thanked him for always going above and beyond his duties to help keep our community safe.

Students And Teachers Mark Lunar New Year

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, second graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned about Chinese language and culture. Students were visited

by the district’s Mandarin Chinese teachers, Tiffany Fan and Yunting Montana on Jan. 24. They showed students how to say different expressions in Mandarin and how to write some Chinese characters.

In marking the beginning of the year of the rabbit, Ms. Fan and Ms. Montana led second graders through a guided drawing of a bunny. Students left with a Lunar Year activity packet.

Councilwoman Laura Maier and Town Board members recently recognized the charitable efforts of 10-year old Julianna Tand, who created beautiful sculptures and artwork and then sold them for over $20,000 – all to benefit Ronald McDonald House. With the support and hard work

of people like Julianna, Ronald McDonald House is able to provide needed support for ill children and their families.

Councilwoman Maier said “Julianna is a talented and exceptional 5th grader who has made helping others, an important priority and we are so incredibly proud of her.”

Julianna’s mother is a

teacher in Massapequa and taught Councilwoman Maier’s three children, over the years. Julianna was presented a Town citation, as Councilwoman Maier thanked her for her tireless efforts which have made a true positive impact on her family’s life and touched her personally.

Happy February, Massapequa! It was a crazy January; many commented that it seemed longer than the usually 31-day month. By now, many resolutions have already been abandoned, and people are getting back to their normal routines. I gave up on making a New Year’s Resolution many years ago, as I realized that goals need to be constantly set, measured, and adjusted – and, most importantly, goals need to be realistic. Nothing is more demoralizing than missing a goal by a wide margin.

Setting a goal must be done the same way you would plan a trip. The goal would be a destination that can be achieved, no matter how challenging it may be. Planning a trip to Antarctica may be a stretch goal for most of us, but it is somewhat achievable if you really want to do it. You would just need to plan a budget that is higher than the average trip, and then nd the travel, via ship or plane, to get there. But, if you added to your goal that you wanted to drive to Antarctica, it would no longer be an achievable goal once you got to the tip of South America.

The key to hitting our goals is to plan the route to them and then make adjustments along the way. Sometimes with goals roads may be closed, and detours must be made, just like getting to a destination. It is also good to have people help you plan your goals. Surround yourself with people who have taken the journey so that they can help you nd the shortcuts and avoid the mistakes they have made to get there. We still have plenty of time this year to reach our goals, and coming to the end of our second month is a great time to re-evaluate them. The Chamber has many events coming up, and the rst one that I want to make sure everyone has on their calendars is our 75th Anniversary Gala / Installation Dinner. I am lucky to have the opportunity to take the helm of an organization that has had outstanding leadership over the past 75 years, and we want to have a great celebration. The dinner is scheduled for Thursday, June 8th at The Royal Palm, so be on the lookout for tickets.

On Thursday, February 16th, we will hold our Annual Fire ghters of the Year Awards Luncheon. It gives me great joy to be able to recognize our local volunteers for their bravery and going above and beyond the call. Our rst responders add so much to the quality of life here in Massapequa and help make this a great community to do business.

Our January Lunch and Learn was sold out, and Maria Guzzetta did a great presentation on how to incorporate “out of the box” thinking in your networking. She was a big hit, and everyone who attended gave her rave reviews. Maria is going to be helping to run our networking events, and she is a valued Board Member of the Chamber.

We have a networking event coming up at TD Bank on Wednesday, March 29th at 5:30pm, and they will be holding a Financial Literacy Seminar along with the networking. Refreshments will be served, and we expect a great turnout for this event. Make sure to bring business cards and meet some of your fellow business owners. Going back to the original topic, my goal as the President of the Chamber of Commerce of the Massapequas is to help my fellow business owners grow their businesses. Networking has been the biggest contribution to the success of growing my own business over the past 26 years, so I want to make sure that our members have as many opportunities as possible to expand their business through networking – and so our luncheons, breakfasts, and dinner meetings will all have more time to network than we have ever had in the past!

Town Accepting New Applications For

9/11 Walls Of Honor

Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each September, the Town unveils newly inscribed names into the Walls of Honor which recognize the family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. This includes first responders, downtown workers, residents, students and so

many others with cancer certified to be 9/11-related. The events of 9/11 continue to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an everincreasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.”

Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and 10,000 people have suffered

cancers linked to the toxic exposure at Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness.

The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired FDNY EMS Lieutenant Bill Gleason, Retired NYPD Detective Tom Luberto, Deacon Dave White, Jericho Fire Commissioner Frank Sammartano, North Massapequa Fire Commissioner Ralph Raymond, Massapequa Fire Commissioner Justin McCaffrey and Rescue & Recovery Worker Joseph Pinto.

Free Narcan Training In Massapequa Park

New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, in partnership with the Village of Massapequa Park, will be holding a free Narcan Training on Thursday, March 2, 2023 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Village Hall in Massapequa Park. A trained specialist from the Nassau County Office of Mental Health, Chemical Dependency & Developmental Disabilities Services will discuss signs of an opiate overdose, overdose risk factors, recognizing and responding to an overdose, administration of Naloxone (Narcan), and new treatment approaches. Each registered participant will receive a free Narcan kit at the completion of the training.

“I strongly encourage all community members to attend this free, life-saving program,” said Durso. “With record high overdose deaths occurring last year from Fentanyl and other opioids, it’s imperative that everyone has the knowledge on how to recognize an overdose and safely administer Narcan.

“As Nassau residents continue to struggle with the heroin and opioid abuse epidemic, I want to thank Assemblyman Durso for partnering with my office to provide residents with this opportunity to learn how to both identify and treat overdoses and potentially save lives,” said Blakeman.

The Charity of the Month for February is The Corporate Source

Do you know who cleans and maintains many Long Island Courts?

A major vocation for people with disabilities is cleaning, maintenance, janitorial, landscaping and snow removal work. The Corporate Source (TCS) is a Garden City-based non profit organization, which has vendor contract relationships to provide cleaning and maintenance for many of Long Island’s courthouse facilities.

As one example, the Su olk County Court Complex in Central Islip averages visits from more than 1000 people a day, whether it is judges, employees, lawyers, plainti s or defendants. Many of these visitors would not know that this 28 acre campus is cleaned and maintained in large measure by people with disabilities from The Corporate Source. In recognized annual surveys these workers are ranked “well into the ninety percentile”, performing above industry standard.

As a logical progression, in 2000 as construction and development of the D’Amato Federal Court House was completed, the Federal government awarded a janitorial contract to The Corporate Source. By 2003, they were so confident in the work of The Corporate Source that the contract evolved into Total Facilities Management including maintenance, landscaping and snow removal. More than 30 TCS employees work alongside a variety of federal employees, including 16 federal judges. Judges have been so impressed by their work that they held a lunch for these employees to express their appreciation for their commitment and outstanding performance. Michael Kramer, CEO of The Corporate Source, said “Our workers earned credibility for this enlarged opportunity. They proved that they could deliver when given a chance to do a job.”

Mr. Kramer mentioned that often cleaning, maintenance and janitorial tasks are perceived as “jobs of last resort” marked by high turnover and

a casual attitude. In contrast he said, “The workers provided by The Corporate Source are motivated when they are given these jobs. Sometimes this is their first position so they have a desire to prove what they can do. Among the 60+ TCS employees at the court complexes in Su olk, some have been employed since TCS first got the contract more than 20 years ago. The retention rate is well above the industry average and many employees are working there multiple years.”

TCS employees appreciate the stability that comes from work. Matt is a Heavy Equipment Mechanic at the D’Amato Federal Courthouse and over the past 23 years has worked his way up through the ranks of Janitor, to Project Worker and after taking additional training at BOCES, moved into his current role as a Mechanic. Matt is thankful for the support of his managers and supervisors who motivated and encouraged him to learn new skills and expand his role. He is grateful that work has given him the ability to provide for his wife and young children.

Richard, a TCS employee since 2017, reentered the workforce as a Janitor in the Su olk County Courthouse. Work not only helps him pay his bills and save for a new car, but also gives him a sense of pride and community. Richard is glad to complete his routine tasks and jump in when additional help is needed. “The people here are the best part of my job” said Richard. “Everyone is nice and I was really glad I got this opportunity to work for TCS.” His manager regularly hears compliments about his work and positive attitude.

the project was to show students how words and illustrations go together in books.

The group will meet in the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station Parking Area. To reach the area from the Wantagh State Parkway, exit at Bay Drive

and continue west. Turn right at entrance for Coast Guard Station and West End Boat Basin; turn right again for parking.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced that the Distinguished Artists Concert Series will continue through May 2023 with free performances at local libraries throughout the Town.

“The Distinguished Artists Concert Series provides free musical and dance programs for the enjoyment of our residents,” said Councilwoman Walsh.

Fairfield Students Provide News To Use

With news, sports and weather, fifth graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are creating a newscast each morning just like their professional counterparts.

The popularity of Fairfield’s Broadcasting Club is evident, as 55 students take turns putting together the morning announcements. There are both on-camera and behind-the-scenes roles, with six assignments each day.

The daily show includes school announcements, a weather report, an update on local sports teams, the lunch menu, a fact of the day and joke of the day. Students gather the information and write their own scripts. A technician operates the iPad, which is used to record the show, as well as lighting and sound equipment. Students are supported by club advisers Stephani Cantelmo, Dallas Dano and Caitlyn Pereira.

When it’s their day, Broadcast Club members report to the library when they arrive at school and begin preparing for the show. It is recorded in front of a green screen so

students can use different background images. They also can add music and sound effects. Once it is recorded, it is uploaded to the school website and teachers can play the morning announcements on their electronic display board.

Emily Bialous, who does lunch menu and weather reports, said that this prepares her for public speaking roles.

“You get to know what it’s like to have everyone watching you,” she said.

Zuzanna Sulawa recounted one day when she felt like a celebrity after an awe-struck kindergartner came up to her in the hall after seeing her on the news that morning. Joseph Andrews added that he feels like he is on SportsCenter when he gives his update.

Assistant Principal Megan Pavlick said that students were able to select their jobs based on interests and strengths. It’s a true team effort, she noted as every role is equally important to the production whether on camera or on the technical side.

A 2013 study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children.
