The Oyster Bay Town Board is focused on protecting this property from future development.

After unsuccessful efforts to reach a purchase price with the present property owners, the Town advanced eminent domain proceedings in court last week. To ensure full transparency and resident participation, the Town Board hosted a public hearing in June 2021 for residents to provide feedback on the Town’s acquisition plans.

At that hearing, there was substantial support for this acquisition from residents, environmentalists, golfers and citizens throughout the Town, including the local civic association.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today advanced plans to acquire and forever preserve the Peninsula Golf Course in Massapequa to ensure that it remains a golf course for public use indefinitely. After learning of an eminent sale of the property to a private sector developer, the Town sought zoning changes to protect it and opened negotiations with the current owner to forever preserve this beautiful open space to prevent development of this environmentally sensitive property. The

Technology courses inspired Brianna Hobert and Chris Sciortino during their years at Massapequa High School. On Jan. 30, the graduates returned to

speak to ninth graders at the Ames Campus about how these classes played a role in their future plans.

Ms. Hobert, a 2019 graduate, earned a

bachelor’s degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the New York Institute of Technology and is currently pursuing a master’s degree.

Alumni Tout Technology Courses At Ames was her focus, while Mr. Sciortino spoke about computer programming.

He is a junior at Adelphi University and graduated from Massapequa High School in 2021.

The graduates talked to about 60 students in Matthew Burke’s and Matthew Ditzel’s Design and Drawing for Production classes. They shared how the technology education courses they took in high school have prepared them for the future. Ms. Hobert and Mr. Sciortino recommended to the students, who still have three years of high school remaining, that they take as many technology classes as possible.

He also encouraged students to start building their portfolios now by saving the work from their technology classes to show what they can do.

The presentation ended with a question-andanswer session for the ninth graders, who were curious about different career paths in technology.

“My hope,” said Patricia LiVecchi, Massapequa’s supervisor of career and technical education, “is that the students now see the opportunities that our technology program offers and that they can get a head start in exploring their career or college pathway by taking technology electives before leaving high school.”

Public Skating Sessions For School Winter Break Week

Town of Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Lou Imbroto announce that families looking for recreational fun during most school districts’ winter recess need look no further than one of the Town’s Ice Skating facilities, which will offer extended hours throughout the week.

The week also marks the last week public skating is available at the Town’s outdoor rinks.

“Families and children looking for a great staycation can head over to our ice skating rinks, either outdoors at Marjorie Post Park or Syosset-Woodbury Park or indoors at our Town Ice Skating Center, during special extended hours for the full winter recess week,” said Councilman Imbroto.

“Our rinks provide the perfect setting for residents to enjoy the winter weather.”

“It’s really exciting,” Fiona said. “We worked hard and we really like science.”

As sixth graders, they tied for first place at the middle school level in Massapequa’s annual Science Discovery Fair.

Kayla’s project was about the effects of saltwater and seaweed on the growth of tadpoles, and Fiona wanted to find out if the heart rate of horses decreases when being groomed.

The Science Discovery Fair has been a tradition for Kayla for several years, while Fiona took part in it for first time last year. They are already planning their experiments for this year’s district competition, which will be held in March.

Additionally, they have been accepted into Berner’s science research class for eighth grade.

Kayla and Fiona both added that their love of science has been enhanced by their middle school science teachers, who bring the subject to life with interesting and engaging experiments. This year, Kayla’s teacher is Rena Harbeck and Fiona has Pamela Forman.

A shared love of science prompted Fiona Ash and Kayla Vessalico, seventh graders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, to team up and enter the IACS Challenge in honor of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Not only did they submit a project, Fiona and Kayla advanced to the finals.

The competition, hosted

by Stony Brook University’s Institute for Advanced Computational Science, required them to choose a female scientist or engineer whose work inspired them.

Fiona and Kayla selected Eunice Newton Foote, a 19th century scientist who discovered the greenhouse effect.

They were required to create an experiment related to their scientist, so Fiona and Kayla explored the effects of carbon dioxide on temperature.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town has been awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.

The recognition, awarded by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA), is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. The Town was praised for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2022.

“This award represents a significant accomplishment by our Town and the way we have

managed our finances,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“Since taking office, my administration has eliminated $44 million in deficits inherited from the prior administration while producing budget surpluses and earning 8 credit rating upgrades from Wall Street – all while cutting property taxes and repaving more roads than ever before!

We’re proud to earn this recognition and will continue practicing fiscal restraint to protect taxpayers.”

In order to be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, a government must publish an easily readable and efficiently organized annual comprehensive

financial report. This report must satisfy both generally accepted accounting principles and applicable legal requirements.

The Town’s financial report is judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the GFOA program, which includes demonstrating a constructive ‘spirit of full disclosure’ to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.

The GFOA, founded in 1906, represents public finance officials throughout the United States and Canada deeply involved in planning, financing and
