Music Courses Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind

the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

Reconstruction Program as a means to administer Federal grant funds intended to help rebuild hard hit communities and help mitigate any further flooding issues in the future. Under the program, the Massapequas were designated as one such reconstruction zone, and numerous projects have been undertaken in the area utilizing these federal grant funds. Under this specific road reconstruction and drainage infrastructure project, five areas of the Massapequas received a variety of flood mitigation measures due their lowlying nature and tendency for flooding. Streets included in the project were Harbor Place, Cabot Road West, Brewster Road, Seneca Place, Division Avenue, Brockmeyer

Drive, Clearwater Avenue, Iroquois Place to Unqua Circle, Pennsylvania Avenue, Philadelphia Avenue and Front Street. Work included complete drainage restoration, increased capacity for drainage through measures such as changing the diameter and pitch

Co-sponsored by Raynham Hall Museum, the event will include a reading of America’s First Valentine, which was written on February 14, 1779 in Oyster Bay. The special ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. and will include light refreshments for all guests. “Valentine’s Day is the most romantic day of the year, and many couples celebrate their wedding anniversaries on this special day. We look forward to making this special day even better

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers “For I Was Hungry And You Gave Me Food…” Matthew 25:35 It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation. Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day. During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining

was available. But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining. The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous onsite and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available. While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for

Dozens of police officers, detectives and even their canine helpers visited Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa

School District for Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on Jan. 9. This was the seventh time the school has hosted the event, in which

guest speakers shared their experiences and showed the tools they use to do the job. The law enforcement professionals were family

and friends of Unqua students and staff. They represented numerous police departments including Nassau and

hung throughout the school featuring the handprints of Unqua students along with a message, “For all you have done and all you will do, I am safe because of you.” Additionally, the student council provided a treat bag for each guest. The bags were filled with candy that symbolized their jobs, such as life savers for their role in helping others and caramel for getting people out of sticky situations. Principal Deanna Catapano thanked Assistant Principal Laura Hulsaver and the teachers for coordinating the visits, as well as all of the police officers who gave their time to speak. She noted that students were highly engaged and interested during the presentations. “Law Enforcement Appreciation Day is a community effort,” Ms. Catapano said. “We always want to show that our law enforcement officers are greatly appreciated.”

Third graders gathered in the auditorium to meet officers and dogs from Nassau County and New York City canine units. Fourth graders learned about the NYPD’s bomb squad. Law enforcement officers were welcomed with open arms.
