After reading “La Chica Nueva,” Spanish language students at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District got to speak with the author — in Spanish, of course.

Jennifer Degenhardt, author of more than a dozen books, met with eighth-graders on December 18th.

Ms. Degenhardt spent the day visiting with students in Janice Kincaid’s and Elizabeth Villajos’s classes. They had discussions about the novel and her inspiration for the story and

characters. Students asked her questions about being an author, and she inquired about their hobbies and interests. The discussions gave students a chance to practice their Spanish conversational skills.

Her visited followed their completion of the book, which Ms. Degenhardt described as a modern day Romeo and Juliet tale with a happier ending.

“Imagine being able to meet the author of books your just read,” Ms. Kincaid said. “That just happened for our students, and that kind of personal interaction brings novels to life and makes it that much more interesting.”

R. Kelly. Yes, I said it. We’re in quite a pickle, aren’t we? As a culture we have allowed mass media to convince us that those who become public figures in entertainment are idols to be worshipped. I know, I know... not you. You’re above it all, but let’s say for the sake of argument that most people aren’t. Fair?

Following your favorite celebrities on social media, buying magazines when they grace the cover, tuning in to watch awards shows, hanging up posters on your bedroom wall as a teenager. Shall I go on?

The past year or so has left society reeling with the realization that many famous people are deeply flawed and sometimes do some very bad things. But why the shock and awe, and devastation? They’re only human, many of them with severe problems. As a culture, we have a bigger problem. We’ve

our nation, we couldn’t believe that this handsome, charismatic football superstar could actually be just a person who most likely committed a heinous crime.

Did you know the construct of “celebrity” is really only about 100 years old? That’s a drop in the bucket. Prior to 1920, there were no radios in people’s homes.

The first “talkie” film was around 1927, and televisions weren’t in homes until 1949. Up until the 20th century you could go to theatre, or read a book, magazine or newspaper. The media was a fraction of the size it is now, and people were community oriented.

The typical family was focused on their home, their community, their church or synagogue and their neighbors.

With the relatively recent constructs of record companies, movie studios, television studios and social media, executives needed to mythologize their stars in order to commoditize them.

They needed to strategize ways

television programs. It generates advertising and sales revenue.

Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment. In fact, I believe that the arts are nourishing to the spirit and play an important role in our existence. But idol worship has led us down a murky path. In my journalistic work interviewing entertainers, I have tried to use that platform to peel away the celebrity veneer and show the person’s humanity to readers.

Maybe I have succeeded at this or maybe I have failed. That is up to you to decide. You’re entitled to your opinion either way.

With my son, I try to impart to him that although he can enjoy great music, theatre, film and television, the people he should be looking to as his role models are the people who touch his life on a daily basis; the people who care for him and his well being.

The only being that we pray to and worship in our home is G-d.

For that is as it should be.

North Massapequa Community Center Re-Opens After a fire caused the building’s second closure in two years, the Town of Oyster Bay recently reopened a fully-renovated and upgraded North Massapequa Community Center. The building, home to more than 20 Town-operated programs, has welcomed back recreational programs, senior groups, performing arts workshops, exercise programs, Knights of Pythias and Knights of Columbus, children’s programs and more, with additional programs and events planned for the new facility in the new year.

“The interior of the North Massapequa Community Center

was destroyed by fire and many community organizations were forced to find temporary homes,” said Town Supervisor Saladino. “Unfortunately, after welcoming these programs back last year, an electrical fire shuttered the facility again. Always looking for a positive, my administration made sure that the newly renovated North Massapequa Community Center is the best it could possibly be, with a full reconstruction and upgrading of the interior, and is now open for our residents.”

In addition to a complete interior renovation, including reconstruction of all walls and utilities, all

HVAC units were replaced with upgraded equipment, all lighting was upgraded to LED, a new AV system was installed, and the main entrance was expanded to further accommodate ADA accessibility. Additionally, all exterior lighting was replaced and upgraded and the parking lot was fully reconstructed. To further save funding, nearly all the work at the center was performed by in-house personnel, which resulted in a tremendous savings to the Town.

January’s Charity of the Month is: PBS Community Foundation

Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs.

Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community.

They also encourage long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and they support efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation.

A lovely young woman, Erin, with a developmental disability has had great success with this foundation. Erin, from Commack has the ability to make decisions and choose her own path through Self Direction.

After graduating from High School in 2010, Erin went on to graduate from Eastern Suffolk Boces in 2013. Once she aged out at 21 years old, she and her family chose to Self-Direct her adult services. By doing so she has been successful in accomplishing many of her personal goals!

Erin has been employed by her local Stop & Shop for over seven years and has even been honored as Employee of the Month!

Additionally, she has built a strong network of social connections. Erin was one of the original members of Big Time Glee, a grassroots singing group that was started by the PBS Community Foundation with just a few young adults meeting weekly at the Leader’s home and singing regularly at community

Senior Centers. She now participates in Big Time Glee (which has grown to 25+ attendees), the Crafting Connection and the PBS Campus Experience at Stony Brook University.

Erin says she looks forward to participating in the PBS Community Foundation initiatives because she enjoys singing and performing in the community and she looks forward to being able to “hang out with her friends”. These activities have led to meaningful relationships, connections and other social and recreational opportunities in her community!

Lastly, Erin volunteers her time to the Guide Dog Foundation and participates weekly in a cooking class, which helps her gain independent living skills. This supports her ultimate goal of living on her own one day.

Teaching Problem Solving Engineer and inventor Rube Goldberg, known for his wacky and complicated machines, inspired fifth-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students in the Magnet program, led by teacher Lorie Moran, built their own Rube Goldberg contraptions.

Each group had to build a machine that accomplished a task. Justin Amante, Ioanna Livanis and Declan Stanton came up with a design that included a moving car and a ball going down a ramp

before ending with a box of Cheerios spilling into a bowl. Other tasks included popping a balloon and watering a plant.

Before building, students had to create step-by-step plans and draw blueprints that identified the transfers of energy. The contraptions had to include different simple machines like levers and pulleys. Children made adjustments during a trialand-error process. All Over the Map Postcards from across the country fill a bulletin board in Tara Mathers’ third-grade classroom at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The project was the culmination of a lesson on geography and map skills.

Each student wrote a

letter to someone they knew in another state and requested a postcard, in addition to asking his or her recipient to pass along the letter to get even more responses. Soon after, the postcards started coming in from all over the United States and even other countries.

Ending 2018 with a Giving Spirit

By early January, the class had received postcards from 46 of 50 states, with the most popular being Florida. Postcards included pictures of animals, college campuses, historical sites, stadiums and other tourist attractions.

The following day, they traveled to the Head Start program in Amityville to spread Christmas cheer. Adviser Michael LaBella dressed

up as Santa while the student elves handed out toys to approximately 100 children.

Additionally, the high school students sang Christmas carols and played games with the youngsters during their visit.
