For Larry Micalizzi of East Islip, New York, his mom’s famous “Heart Attack” Noodles are connected to his fondest memories of growing up in Levittown.

As he tells it, this fun dish was a staple at just about every special occassion.

Happy People Are “Luckier” My cousin Brandon has always been one of the happiest people I know. He has also been one of the luckiest. He has an uncanny ability to find the humor in everything, to play up his successes and brush off his challenges.

What I have come to realize is that happier people are luckier.

Let’s examine why that is. After all, my cousin has had some less than pleasant events in his life, as we all have. But because he never allowed them to take up too much space, they just seemed to not really matter all that much.

These days, he has a beautiful home, a happy marriage, two children and a thriving legal practice. Yes, he ultimately got pretty lucky, but perhaps some of his good fortune can be credited to his happiness.

I believe that, much like a radio, the frequency he is continuously emitting is positive. Therefore, an overwhelming amount of positive circumstances must show up as a reflection of the signal he is sending out. Picture those rooftop cell phone and radio towers. He’s dialed his station to

LUCKY FM. Some people tend to stay permanently tuned to WOE IS ME FM - Playing the best complaints all day long with few, if any, commercial interruptions.

If I just hit a nerve, that’s okay.

Trust me, I’ve been there and I get it. But if your dial is tuned to WOE IS ME FM, it should not come as a surprise that you feel unlucky, or that your antenna is tuned to pick up things during the day that are bound to frustrate, sadden or annoy you.

If you were to sit at the computer and type questions into Google, like, “Why is life so hard?”

“Why are there bad people in the world?” or “Show me where there are wars, famines, floods and people suffering,” Google could cue up that information for you and provide you with plenty of evidence that life is a scary and unhappy proposition.

Conversely, if you were to Google, “Reasons to feel happy,” “Things to love about being alive,” or “Most beautiful places on earth,” Google can show you results that would reinforce life as joyful and pleasant. As a result,

my hypothesis is as follows: Happy people seem lucky because they feel lucky. Either consciously or unconsciously, they have made a decision to keep their antenna tuned to the people, places, circumstances and events that help to reinforce this lucky feeling. In return, this makes them feel happy, which leads to more of the same. It’s a remarkably genius feedback loop.

Here are four simple steps you can take today to begin to tune your antenna to a happier station: Smile at people as they pass by. Reminise about positive memories - ones that make you laugh and ones that make you feel blessed. Start a gratitude journal just start with five entries a day if that’s less overwhelming. Read or watch something funny each and every day.

You will begin to build up your positive feedback loop and you can add more practices as time goes on. The object of this exercise is to reinforce that happy feeling, re-tune your antenna and one day have someone ask you, “How’d you get so lucky?!”

Tech Makes the World Smaller Third-grade students are extending their learning outside the friendly confines of East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District by connecting with children on the other side of the world.

In Annette Ready’s class, a technology-based activity spans beyond the Pacific

Ocean as her students are interacting with their peers in Shenzhan, China. They have been exchanging short, personal videos across the globe via GridPals. The digital pen pals at both East Lake and in Shenzhen are sharing insights of their interests, hobbies, families and favorite foods.

“As different as you might imagine Shenzhen to be, you would be hardpressed to come to that conclusion watching these videos,” Ms. Ready said. “You can envision all these children popping up together at a party or school function. Perhaps the world just isn’t so very different after all.”

A Volunteer Fair was held in the commons of Farmingdale High School on Wednesday, November 28, 2018—organized by the Guidance Department and facilitated by counselors Lisa Jensen and Jackie Verre.

It was an opportunity for students (grades 9-12) to learn about local organizations, which are

consistently in need of volunteers. The vendors included: Island Harvest Food Bank, AHRC, the Farmingdale Public Library, Northwell Health, the Farmingdale Village Fire Department, the FBI Explorers Program, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and many others.

Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs.

Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, encourages long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and supports efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation.

For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for about 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and are pursuing their personal goals while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. What is often missing is communitybased, grass roots support networks... the inter-connected social fabric that will secure life-long inclusion for individuals with disabilities as the basic human right that it is!

This non-profit supports initiatives across Long Island. These initiatives are based in venues that are accessible to the community. They aim to create connections between individuals that need support, people that support them (paid staff ), families and loved ones (circles of support), potential employers and businesses, integrated community resources that promote respect and dignity and service providers that support the philosophy of self direction. Some of their initiatives are Big Time GLEE, which is a grass roots singing group that meets every other week; Crafting Connection, which allows individuals to gather every other week to scrapbook, paint, draw and do more crafty

projects and lastly, Mid-Week Meetups, which help people develop friendships based on shared interests and explore new social and recreational opportunities across Long Island! Some other initiatives this organization supports are Nassau Voice, Speed Friending, Yoga Without Boundaries, Emergency Preparedness Classes and the Nature Experience.

The NIDDK recommends making physical activity a priority for the whole family. Choosing a set time for physical activity and sticking to it may

help you manage stress, improve your mood, and give you the energy to tackle your busy schedule.

If it’s too cold to walk or run outdoors, take your workout to your favorite mall or indoor sports field.

Even if you’re pressed for time, doing some physical activity is better than skipping your workout and doing nothing.

Another tip to consider during the holiday season and every day to improve health and manage weight is to reduce screen time and time spent sitting.

Watching TV for more than two hours a day has

been linked to overweight and obesity. Try creating a holiday-themed playlist and having a dance party.

You can have fun dancing alone or with family or friends.

To further encourage adults and youth to be active, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also recently released new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

The new Guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity activity each week, such as brisk walking or dancing. Youth ages six

To support students and families, the College Board— the creator of the SAT and Advanced Placement—has launched a first-of-its-kind national scholarship program that serves as a simple college planning guide for all students. It explains what to do and when to do it.

These College Board Opportunity Scholarships

lay out six simple steps that all students can take to get into college. Completing each step will earn a chance for a scholarship; completing all six will earn students a chance to win $40,000 for their college education.

These six steps help students plan by making a good starter college list, help them prepare so they can take their best shot and help them pay for college: 1. Build a College List— Students get started by

exploring colleges they’re interested in.

2. Practice for the SAT— Students use Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy to help them get ready for test day.

3. Improve SAT Scores— Students show how practice pays off by improving their SAT score.

4. Strengthen College Lists—Students make sure their college list is a mix of academic safety, fit and reach schools.

5. Complete the FAFSA— Students fill out the free government form to apply for financial aid.

6. Apply to Colleges— Students apply to the schools they want to attend.

A Big Difference One thing that makes these scholarships different from other programs is that they’re about how much students grow, not how high they score.

They don’t require an essay or an application and don’t have a minimum GPA or SAT

score requirement. Instead, the program rewards all students’ efforts and actions on their way to college. The more effort students put in and actions they complete, the more chances they have to earn a college scholarship.

The College Board is investing $25 million over five years. A total of $5 million is available for each graduating class, beginning with the class of 2020. All students are invited.

This is going to be a lengthy review, but please stick with it and read it till the end, because I have so many reasons that Michele and Mark Goodman were the absolute best realtors that we could have ever hoped for.
