On Sunday December 20, 2020, KiDS NEED MoRE hosted their 6th Annual HoLiDAY CHEER BUS ELF RiDE. Buses stocked with toydelivering elves drove to homes all over Long Island to make wishes come true for over 400 families coping with cancer and serious illness.

Sometimes the things we don’t expect and haven’t prepared for turn out to be the most lifechanging experiences. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015.

Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need.

They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response.

Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island.

The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island.

Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/ donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie.

“We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a

storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.”

The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives.

They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which is located at 350-23 East Main Street.

Angels of Long Island typically holds many outreach events during the year such as a Back to School Drive, Thanksgiving Assistance, a Coat Drive, Christmas Help and more.

However, due to the pandemic they aren’t holding all of these outreach events. Ones that are held are designed with safety in mind.

This past December the charity held a huge Christmas Help outreach event, where many people in need were able to come to an outdoor event and children could choose up to five gifts along with grabbing hats, gloves and scarves. Then their entire family could choose from tasty food items to bring home for a Christmas meal, along with being able to shop for other food items to bring home. All of this was free of charge to the children and families who participated.

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose.

In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

The African American Museum was granted the 2005 Museum Preservation Award by American Legacy magazine, one of only 10 museums to be honored for work done to preserve African-American history and culture.

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple.

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. Saladino Partners with Massapequa Cancer Survivor to Collect Blood Donations To help hospitals meet the ongoing need for blood, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Laura Maier and cancer survivor Aliyah Petrone of Massapequa partnered to host a Blood Collection Drive on Saturday, December 19th at Marjorie Post Park. Over 30 pints of blood were collected at this collection drive. A single pint of blood can save up to three lives.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay was

proud to partner with Aliyah Petrone to collect donations for hospital patients throughout Long Island. Together with Councilwoman Maier, we honored cancer survivor Aliyah Petrone of Massapequa for giving back to our community.

At the age of 18, Aliyah was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and received multiple blood transfusions at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

Aliyah has a heart of gold and helped coordinate this drive so that blood donations are readily

available for others.”

“Blood donations are extremely important to help secure any necessary blood transfusions for patients.

During this pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest drive in our local area, was critical and helped our local hospitals meet demand and continue their lifesaving operations during these extraordinary times,” stated Councilwoman Maier.
