Berner Students Learn History

Veterans from all eras and all branches of the United States military shared their personal stories with students during the annual Take a Veteran to School Day program at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District.

Eighth graders had an opportunity to visit the library during their social studies classes and sit down for personal talks with veterans.

studies teacher Noreen Miller, who organized the event, noted that the curriculum is post-Civil War American history, so students study the conflict periods during which the veterans have served.

Ms. Miller said that 32 men and women came in to speak with students including a World War II veteran and a current Navy SEAL. The veterans included parents and grandparents of Berner students, family members of teachers and staff, and representatives from the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War posts.

As they arrived at the school, veterans were greeted by the sight of dozens of waving American flags on the front lawn, as the Field of Honor is an annual tradition for Veterans Day. Additionally, Berner teachers and staff members provided photos of family members who served in the military, which lined the bookshelves of the library as discussions took place. After speaking with the veterans, students were asked to write them thank-you letters, highlighting information they learned from those who lived history.

Ten students from the Massapequa High School Ames Campus stepped out of the classroom and into the kitchen for a few hours to participate in a meaningful community service activity. Ninth graders from the Helping Hands club visited the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park to do some baking.

Upon arriving, students received a tour of the facility, where families stay while a child is undergoing medical treatment at a nearby hospital. They also learned about the many services the Ronald McDonald House offers and how it is fully supported from donations and volunteers.

The students, who were accompanied by advisers Nicole Reiss and Tara Camilleri, then worked in the kitchen to bake brownies, cookies, crumb cake and cupcakes for the families.

Ninth grader Sophia Diaz, who helped make the brownies, said it was her first time there and she gained perspective on the positive impact that volunteer service can have on the lives of others.

Emma Mastroberti said she understands that the families staying there are dealing with difficult situations and it is important to be there for them. Fellow Helping Hands member Amelia Caselnova explained that it was nice to see people of all ages giving their time and was appreciative that her school provided her with an opportunity to contribute.

“It was good to see how people care about others,” she said. “It was a great experience and I definitely would do it again.”
