Philippines Fundraiser
n the spirit of giving and supporting others in the community, the Student Council and co-advisers Dawn Hovanec and Jeanette Roberto of North Babylon’s Marion G. Vedder Elementary School hosted various fundraisers in November. Following the devastation in the Philippines caused by Typhoon Haiyan, students participated in “Fill A Heart For The Philippines” by donating $1 to color a heart used to decorate the hallway.

Season Of Giving In the spirit of giving and supporting others in the community and the world at large, the student council and coadvisers Dawn Hovanec and Jeanette Roberto of North Babylon’s Marion G. Vedder Elementary School hosted various fundraisers in November. Following the devastation in the Philippines caused by
Typhoon Haiyan, students participated in “Fill a Heart for the Philippines” by donating $1 to color a heart that was used to decorate the school’s main hallway. The money raised will be donated to the American Red Cross. The Student Council also collected toiletries and wrote letters of encouragement to the families that have been
affected. The goods and letters will be sent to the Queens Bible Church in Glendale, NY, which will forward all donations at no cost to the Philippines. Additionally, the student council hosted an arts-andcrafts supply drive, with all materials collected being donated to the children’s ward at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun. Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently. Prior to my first Black Friday shopping experience, I was one who would wait until the week of Christmas to even begin, occasionally
even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it. Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.
Not that you will ever catch me in a store on Thanksgiving itself. The holiday is exactly that – a holiday – and should be celebrated and savored as such. Plenty of time to shop in the month following; beginning on Black Friday just seems to add a little extra excitement to the process. Call me crazy. Call me a convert to the madness. Whatever. And with that, I had better get some sleep. I have a long day of shopping ahead of me tomorrow. Enjoy your Thanksgiving leftovers, make your list, check it twice – and maybe I’ll see you on line at the store.

Petra’s Puppets Students of Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District recently enjoyed a visit from ventriloquist Steve Petra, who presented “It’s Alive,” a curriculumbased assembly involving a myriad of entertaining puppets. During his presentation, Mr. Petra
introduced students to characters including The Brain, The Stomach, The Lungs and The Heart. The interactive performance explored how the body works and encouraged children to respect their bodies and minds. Show segments included: “Who’s in Charge: The brain and
nervous system,” “Give Me Some Air: The lungs, breathing, nose and wind pipe,” “Pump It Up: The heart and blood vessels,” and “Guts at Work: The digestive system.” In addition to puppets, students learned how the body functions through the use of original songs and illusions.

On November 19th, the West Babylon School District Wellness Committee hosted a Social-Emotional Health Awareness Night for all parents of the district. The informative and free event held at the high school touched upon numerous subjects and provided local resources to all those in attendance. Upon receiving an overview of the evening from Executive Director for Curriculum and
Instruction Christine Tona, attendees were invited to attend three 30-minute workshops of their choosing from a list of 13 sessions presented by West Babylon students, staff and local experts. Workshops exploring a myriad of topics were made available to parents and students. Topics ranged from “Building Emotional Intelligence in Children and Families” and “Preventing Academic Stress in

The Ride for Life Organization, which raises funds and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, has earmarked $160,000 for Stony Brook University in 2014 to support ALS research and clinical care. A portion of these funds ($100,000) will be the latest installment from the Ride for Life to support the development of ALS clinical trials at the Stony Brook Neurosciences Institute. The pledge is in conjunction with the match from the Simons Foundation Challenge Grant. The $60,000 slated for clinical care services at Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, an ALS Association Certified Center providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for patients, will come directly from

Ride For Life Donation
Continued From 26 for Life will provide additional funds to other organizations in the region, expanding services such as home nursing care and handicapped loaner vans designed to make mobility for patients and their families more manageable. Funds for the organization’s “Care for Life” program, which provides a one-time grant to support home respite care, will be increased per individual patient recipient. The Ride for Life will also continue its support of Long Island high school seniors who have a family member affected by ALS with its college

Ride For Life Donation scholarship program. Some 40 high school students have received scholarships over the past six years. Next year $6,000 in scholarships will be announced sometime in February. Most of the funds generated by the Ride for Life organization can be attributed to the annual Ride for Life event that occurs during ALS Awareness Month each May. The 2014 event begins on May 5. Prior to that, the Ride for Life will hold its Bike Trek, a multilength bicycle fundraiser that courses through the Stony Brook University Campus on April 27th.
