Babylon Encouraging Donations To Assist Puerto Rico And Florida In Wake Of Hurricanes Fiona And Ian
The images emerging from the State of Florida in recent days and Puerto Rico in recent weeks are heartbreaking. As a shoreline community that has experienced devastation caused by Mother Nature, our hearts are with the people of Puerto Rico and Florida as are our thoughts and prayers. We will soon mark the 10 year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy devastating our community. In the wake of Sandy, Babylon received immense support through all sorts of donations.
Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the Babylon Town Board are encouraging residents to show Puerto Ricans and Floridians the same generosity we were shown
10 years ago through monetary donations to private funds set up to support those affected by both storms.
PRxPR Relief and Rebuild Fund is a disaster relief fund that has been focused on rebuilding Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017. Following Hurricane Fiona’s impact on the island, the organization is collecting money for short and long-term humanitarian needs. The PRxPR Relief and Rebuild Fund is organized in partnership with the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico, a 501(c)(3) tax deductible corporation.
The Florida Disaster Relief Fund. The Florida Disaster Relief Fund is the state’s official private fund established to assist
Floridians in response to natural disasters such as Hurricane Ian. Donations to the fund are made through the Volunteer Florida Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible charity organization. State officials have announced that the disaster relief fund is the best way to help Floridians who are struggling in the wake of Ian.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services
Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.
The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.
One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.
“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to
promote emotional and psychological release through creative
movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”

Options For Community Living Receives Support From Bethpage Federal Credit Union
Nonprofit organizations are an integral force on Long Island, improving the quality of life for adults and children in our communities. Partnerships take this impact one step further. Options for Community Living, Inc. (Options), a Long Island based not-for-profit human services organization, and Bethpage Federal Credit Union (BFCU), enjoy a partnership designed to strengthen the Long Island community through volunteerism, in-kind donations, board support, and grant funding. Partnership projects are designed to bridge the missions of both organizations.
As a major supporter of Long Island-based community programs for children, Bethpage Federal Credit Union donated 65 backpacks to families in Options programs. Each backpack was filled with supplies for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Additional support in the form of grant funding was awarded to Options through the Bethpage Cares Charitable Giving Program. A $15,000 grant award provides vital financial support for Options housing program for formerly homeless Long Islanders with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Last year, this program provided safe, stable, supportive housing for 200 adults and children.

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible.
The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. October 26, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. at the Babylon Public Library. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. The training will include an opiate informational presentation, overdose risk factors, recognizing and responding to an overdose, and administration of Naloxone (Narcan). The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County’s Annual Holiday Lightshow Expands Its Annual Celebrations
The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and County Executive Steve Bellone are excited to announce the Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will be returning to Smith Point County Park in Shirley for the 19th consecutive year. This year, the drive-thru event which features more than a mile of illuminated holidaythemed displays, will take place from November 26th to December 30th. In addition to the annual drive-thru holiday attraction, new to this year’s event, GSSC will also create an incredible walk-through Enchanted Forest and Holiday Village featuring 200ft light displays, photos with Santa, a picnic area for s’mores, music, and games at Southaven County Park in Yaphank. Along with being a favorite holiday attraction among families from throughout Long Island, the seasonal event serves as an important fundraiser for Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to help expand the access girls throughout Suffolk County have to the empowering Girl Scout experience.

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s annual holiday light show is a drive-through show along a 1.5-mile trail at Smith Point County Park Campgrounds filled with dazzling holiday light displays, created by our Girl Scouts, Staff, and members of our communities throughout Suffolk County. The holiday event features more than 100 fun artistic, holiday-themed displays. This year, the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County have added 5 exhibits that were conceptualized by local, awardwinning Girl Scouts.
“I am so excited to welcome back the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Holiday Light Show for the 19th year in a row,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “This year’s show is expected to be even bigger and better with multiple exciting new holiday attractions. Not only is this a fun family tradition, it also serves as a critical fundraising event to ensure girls throughout the county are able to reach their full potential.”
The Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will be open daily from November 26th to December 30th, excluding December 24th and 25th, from 5 pm to 9 pm. The Enchanted Forest will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 5 pm to 9 pm from November 26th to December 18th and will
run from December 26th to December 30th.
Since outgrowing its space at Camp Edey in Bayport, in 2016, the fundraising event has been held at Smith Point County Park. The light displays are assembled and built-in part, by GSSC staff and dedicated volunteers from PSEG Long Island, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1049 and Local 25, and the Long Island Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association. Proceeds from the Holiday Light Show and Enchanted Forest benefit girl leadership programs as well as provide financial assistance for girls to join Girl Scouts and attend our summer camp program.
