The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is a non-profit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. BACCA Award Winners The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, BACCA is proud to announce this year’s Photography & Sculpture Show winners. The many entries on exhibition were outstanding. The winners were presented with their ribbons at a reception on Thursday evening, September 29th, at Old

Town Hall in Babylon Village. The reception was well attended and enjoyed by all of the photographers, sculptors and their friends and family. Members from the community came to enjoy the festivities as well. The sculpture judge was Eileen Barry. Ms. Barry is a noted American sculptor who works in her studio in East Islip. Her

numerous commissioned monuments can be seen installed in many public locations. Her works include, “The Rensselaer Monument Bronze Sculpture” and “Courage, Compassion, Pain “The Viet Nam Experience,” amongst many others. Numerous collectors in the U.S. and Europe are proud to exhibit her work.

up their sleeves and took part in the hands-on aspect of the program. The hatchery donated 200 juvenile oysters for the students to place in oyster cages that were engineered in their classes. Students then tagged and set their cages in water at both Gilgo Beach Marina and the Carlls River in Babylon to test if these oysters would be able to grow and survive within these conditions. The ongoing

studies will allow them to determine if oysters can be used to clean and filter local water systems. “We’re excited to monitor the data throughout the year so that we can expand and continue the program for next year,” said Science Director Kristen Dixon, who accompanied the students on the trip along with teachers Mary Beth Schappert and Andrew Sheltz.

Already as toddlers and at a very young age Kids during those days satanic presentations stage. Unfortunately, the entire world is so full of crime, Maybe it would be wiser to stick to the sublime.

As part of the international movement, Babylon Elementary School students and their families left their cars at home and walked, biked and used their leg muscles to travel to school on October 5th for the annual “Walk to School Day” event. The event drew in a large crowd of students, family members and staff,

all donning orange and black clothing to raise awareness for an active and healthy lifestyle. Babylon Elementary School Principal Travis Davey was on hand to welcome students before they entered the building and assist them as they placed cutout paper feet onto the decorative “Walk to School” poster placed on the side of the school

Walking to School building. “We’ve hosted this event every year for the past few years, and everyone always has a great time taking part in it,” said Babylon Elementary School Physical Education teacher Rob Andrews. “This gives students the opportunity to get in their exercise for the day while having fun along the way.”

The North Babylon School District welcomes new Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Kimberly Skillen to its esteemed team of administrators beginning in the 20162017 school year. Skillen comes to the district with nearly 20 years of experience in education, most recently serving as an administrator overseeing secondary curriculum and instruction in the Deer Park School District since 2010. Prior to that, she served as the associate principal of curriculum and instruction at Deer Park High School, and worked in the Baldwin School District prior to that - first as a social studies teacher and then as social studies supervisor. Skillen holds a bachelor’s degree in history from SUNY Oswego, a master’s degree in education from LIU Post, and a professional diploma in school district administration from SUNY Stony Brook. At SUNY Oswego, Skillen also minored in museum studies; at LIU Post, she earned state certification for grade 7-12 social studies; and at SUNY Stony Brook, she earned school district administration certification. In the past, Skillen has been named a recipient of the SCOPE Community Service award, the Town of Babylon Women’s History Month Community Service award, and the Vision Long Island Smart Growth award. West Babylon Junior High School students recently took home the top three awards in grades 6-8 at the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts 2016 Judged Photography and Sculpture Show at Old Town Hall in Babylon. Seventh-grader Siya

Wadhwa placed first in the photography category for her photo “A View of the World.” Eighth-grader Jordyn Hickey placed second for her photo “The Art of the World,” and seventh-grader Stephanie Curley took third place for her photo “Flowers.”

Honorable mention went to seventh-grader Liam Mengler for his “Freedom” photo. The artwork was on display from September 20th to October 5th with an awards ceremony on September 29th.
