On November 2nd, participants will run for their lives to escape the zombie apocalypse at Brady Park in Massapequa Park to benefit Special Olympics New York! The rUNDEAD is a 5K run, in which runners start off with a flag belt and three flags representing their lifelines. Zombies will be stationed throughout the course attempting to take

these one at a time. Once a runner loses all three flags, they are “dead” and the zombies have won. While the runner can still finish the race, they will not be eligible for awards or prizes. Runners can register in two different ways – the competitive “Fast Food” group or the noncompetitive “All You Can Eat” group. You

can register online as an individual or a team in advance for $40 per person at www.therundead.org or sign up that day for $60. Each runner will receive access to the course, race day festivities and an official rUNDEAD race day t-shirt. Those who do not wish to run have the option of registering to become a zombie! Each zombie

will be transformed in our “Mob Tent” the morning of the event. Zombies have the option of registering as a “Hunter” who can chase runners or a “Crawler” who can stumble, walk or shuffle after their prey to try and steal their flags. Forever An Original By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Albert Capraro, Lindenhurst High School Class of 1961 graduate, Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976 and personal designer of choice to none other than First Lady Betty Ford, passed away on October 8th, 2013 following a brief illness. I consider myself lucky to have made his acquaintance and privileged to have interviewed him for a proﬁle for this very column several years ago. Following are excerpts from my original piece, published October 11th, 2006 ... Mr. Capraro’s path to success began to take shape way back in high school while walking the halls of Lindy. His influences ranged from several members of the art department to his beloved guidance counselor, all of whom nurtured his already-outstanding talent for both fashion and film, even going so far

as to attend the “fashion shows” and “movie premieres” he would put on at his home. After graduating from the prestigious Parsons School of Design, Mr. Capraro landed his first job working with a French designer on Park Avenue. He then moved on to a position with noted designer Joberie, headquartered on Seventh Avenue - Fashion Avenue. From there, he catapulted to the opportunity of a lifetime, working with Oscar de la Renta - his “mentor” - with whom he flourished for eight glorious years. Mr. Capraro eventually started up his own label, of which his first collection was quite a success. As he dryly observed, “I was an ‘overnight’ sensation after ten years.” However, it was exactly this achievement which provided the necessary steppingstone from which there would be no turning back. After reading a favorable review of his clothing line, First

Lady Betty Ford invited Mr. Capraro to a personal consultation at the White House. And the rest, as they say, is history. Through the years, he designed for a vast collection of women, including the likes of Julie Andrews, Marlo Thomas, Sophia Loren, Barbara Walters, Marissa Tomei and several of the Miss Americas. In 1976, he accomplished the “hat trick” of being the simultaneous designer-of-choice for Miss America 1976, First Lady Betty Ford and American Ambassador Ann Armstrong, helping to crown him with his most-cherished title of Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976. For a man whose designs now qualify as “vintage” on E-bay; for someone who used to regularly mingle with all walks of stars, he comes away from the whole experience with one sentiment that stands above the rest: “Ego doesn’t work.” As a result, Mr. Capraro

But now, behold, on the far horizon, one sees several stratocumulus clouds revealing their puffy, hoary cotton balls And I fantasize a desire and urge, like a lad, to jump and frolic upon them. When once more the sky appears blue like the calm waters of a tepid tropical sea, I am restored again, breathing deeply and at ease, achieving a state of elation and high spirits. It is the sky’s indigo light and the crepuscular rays of sunshine passing in and through the diaphanous clouds which bestirs one to vibrant fervor and eagerness for life.

Learning Fire Safety

In recognition of October as Fire Safety Month, Marion G. Vedder Elementary School in North Babylon received a special visit from members of the North Babylon Fire Department. During the visit, the kindergarten through third-grade students received an up-close and personal look at a fire truck and all of its parts. They also participated in the department’s smoke house, which taught vital burn prevention

techniques through a fun and safe simulation. The house was filled with a nontoxic, odorless smoke to teach children how to properly evacuate a building that is on fire. Following the smoke house lessons, each class received coloring books and plastic fire hats. Additionally, the fourth- and fifth-graders participated in an assembly program in which the firefighters reviewed the importance of fire safety and prevention.

Unity Day

In recognition of October as National Bully Prevention Month, students and staff at North Babylon High School and Robert Moses Middle School celebrated Unity Day by wearing orange. “We hope Unity Day will raise awareness among students that bullying is an issue and not something they should be afraid to talk about,” said school social worker Paul Lundquist.

In addition to wearing orange, students were encouraged to sign an anti-bullying pledge, and homeroom teachers spent time discussing what bullying is and what students can do if they witness bullying in action. Teachers also provided examples of bullying, including physical, verbal and cyber. Students were given orange ribbons to tie on their backpacks and

lockers, with additional ribbons to be tied around the outside of the building later in the month. Unity Day is a national movement sponsored by PACER. According to the website, Unity Day exists to “show those being bullied that they are not alone, that you care, and [to] lead the movement against bullying.”

Going Pink For Gold

When it came time to choose a community service project for her Girl Scout Gold Award, North Babylon High School senior Arielle Gelosi, a member of Troop 3163, chose a cause close to her heart – breast cancer awareness and education. In 2008, Arielle’s mother Theresa Gelosi passed away from breast cancer following a two-year battle with the disease. In order to successfully

obtain the Gold Award, a Girl Scout must create a service project that will not only provide her community with immediate assistance, but will also continue to contribute to the community in the future. For Arielle’s project, she is organizing a community breast cancer walk to help raise funds and awareness about the disease. The walk is scheduled for Saturday, October 26th from 2 to 6

p.m. on the track at North Babylon High School. Community residents are invited to attend and participate. “I feel that early detection is essential,” said Arielle. “If my mother had found her cancer earlier, she may still be here with us today. If I can have one person, because of my project, go and get themselves checked and detect it early, it will all be worth it.” In addition to organizing the community walk, Arielle created a breast cancer mosaic, using materials donated by the Deer Park Home Depot, to hang near one of the girls’ locker rooms at the high school. The mosaic, which is a heart with an interlocking pink ribbon, will serve as a subtle reminder to all on the importance of early detection and treatment. All-National Selection

Abigail Rae Carberry, a senior at West Babylon High School, has been selected to perform with the All-National Mixed

Choir in Nashville, Tenn. This is the first time a West Babylon student has been chosen for this prestigious honor. Abigail will be performing this October with music students from all around the country under the direction of Rollo Dilworth. As a sophomore, Abigail performed in the New York State School Music Association solo evaluation festival and received a grade of 100. She also received a grade of 100 on her junior NYSSMA solo. Because the

judges were so impressed, she was not only chosen for the All-County and AllState choirs, but was also selected last April for the All-Eastern Mixed Choir in Hartford, Conn. Abigail is an avid performer, having sung in numerous variety shows and acoustic nights at West Babylon High School, performing with the Sing Out Loud glee choir and singing the national anthem for the Town of Babylon Summer Music Series at Tanner Park.
