Babylon Encouraging Donations To Assist Puerto Rico And Florida In Wake Of Hurricanes Fiona And Ian

The images emerging from the State of Florida in recent days and Puerto Rico in recent weeks are heartbreaking. As a shoreline community that has experienced devastation caused by Mother Nature, our hearts are with the people of Puerto Rico and Florida as are our thoughts and prayers. We will soon mark the 10 year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy devastating our community. In the wake of Sandy, Babylon received immense support through all sorts of donations.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the Babylon Town Board are encouraging residents to show Puerto Ricans and Floridians the same generosity we were shown 10 years ago through monetary

donations to private funds set up to support those affected by both storms.

PRxPR Relief and Rebuild Fund is a disaster relief fund that has been focused on rebuilding Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017. Following Hurricane Fiona’s impact on the island, the organization is collecting money for short and long-term humanitarian needs. The PRxPR Relief and Rebuild Fund is organized in partnership with the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico, a 501(c)(3) tax deductible corporation.

The Florida Disaster Relief Fund. The Florida Disaster Relief Fund is the state’s official private fund established

to assist Floridians in response to natural disasters such as Hurricane Ian. Donations to the fund are made through the Volunteer Florida Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible charity organization. State officials have announced that the disaster relief fund is the best way to help Floridians who are struggling in the wake of Ian.

Douglas Elliman Long Island Makes A Large Impact

The Long Island division of Douglas Elliman Realty, one of the largest residential brokerage companies in the nation, has partnered with The American Cancer Society to help in the fight against breast cancer.

As part of the organization’s annual, year-long initiative Real Men Wear Pink, agents from Elliman branch offices across Long Island have volunteered as Campaign Ambassadors to raise awareness and money in the fight to end breast cancer. Since its inception in 2013, Real Men Wear Pink has raised more than $40 million.

The brokerage’s involvement began in 2021, when Carlos Salinas, an agent in the Smithtown office, became the first Douglas Elliman Real Men Wear Pink Campaign Ambassador. Salinas found great joy in helping to make a difference and shared his experience with Ann Conroy, CEO of Douglas Elliman’s Long Island division. Inspired by Salinas, Conroy encouraged each Long Island branch office to establish a Campaign Ambassador for 2022. With more and more agents signing on, the Elliman team has raised more than $131,000 toward its $200,000 goal—and with plenty of fundraising

events yet to happen before year’s end.

“When I came to Douglas Elliman last year, my goal was to be one of the very best agents in the company while also giving back philanthropically,” said Salinas. “What better cause is there than to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The support of both Ann Conroy and Katy Cardinale, Branch Manager of Douglas Elliman’s Smithtown office, has been monumental in my efforts of raising awareness through Real Men Wear Pink and The American Cancer Society.”

Salinas, who has raised almost $10,000 to date, is set to participate in a large fundraising and networking event on Tuesday, October 18th at Prato 850 in Commack, with all revenue benefiting the Real Men Wear Pink Campaign.

Michael Furino, another philanthropic agent with Douglas Elliman’s Franklin Square office, has dedicated himself to serving as a Campaign Ambassador.

“I started my own charity about 10 years ago, through which I have raised over $1,000,000,” said Furino.

“When I was presented with the opportunity to become involved with Real Men Wear Pink, I was immediately excited,

since I was confident in my ability to organize great events and raise significant funds. It’s been a great experience for me to be a Campaign Ambassador for many reasons, including getting to know other agents in my office on a deeper level—some of them have even had personal experiences battling breast cancer.”

Furino, who has raised almost $20,000 to date, will host a Vegas Night fundraiser on Thursday, October 20, at Chateau Briand in Carle Place.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

Every summer, HKS hosts Camp Helen Keller, a program for children who are blind, have low vision are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss. The camp seeks to improve participants’ self-esteem, selfconfidence and socialization skills. It’s held at the LIU Post campus in Brookville and admits campers from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, who attend free of charge and receive door-to-door transportation, also free of charge.

“Everyone here is the same,” says Ellie Gallagher, a 10-year-old camper from Freeport, NY. “Here we all have some kind of visual disability, so no one feels different. And it’s a lot of fun.” Campers participate in traditional activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, music and dance classes, as well as field trips and technology

classes that have been adapted for individuals with low vision.

Every year, the camp organizes a show on the last day of the one-month program to celebrate the campers’ achievements, show parents and friends what campers have been doing and to say goodbye to old and new friends. This year, show-stopping performances included dance routines to favorite songs including “Rainbow Connection” “The Theme From Cheers” and singing performances by select campers.

“It’s such a confidence boost for her,” says Ellie’s mom, Jennifer. “She looks forward to seeing the same friends every year. The activities she experiences lets her know she’s just like every other kid and can do just about anything.”

Additionally, October is month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways, including World Sight Day on October 14, White Cane Day on October 15 and the entire month designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. It’s important to accept people of all abilities, from all walks of life, and this nonprofit does just that.

On The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank, The Museum Of American Armor Seeks Those Who Crewed These Legendary Vehicles

On the 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe during World War II, the Museum of American Armor is seeking to honor those veterans who crewed these legendary vehicles.

The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank veterans to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary this coming Veterans Day by participating in an oral histories project that memorializes their experiences.

Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish stated, “The Armor Museum continues to offer a powerful presentation that keeps alive the legacy of our nation’s military and the gift of freedom they have given all of us. The Sherman tank is an important part of that story and we are asking tanker veterans to come forward and help us preserve their legacy.”

In recognition of its considerable importance, the Armor Museum’s acquisition of a Sherman tank was one of the first actions undertaken by Mr. Kadish when he

undertook the creation of the museum. “You can’t effectively tell the story of American courage during World War II without this particular tank on operational

display,” observed Mr. Kadish.

Some 50,000 Sherman tanks were built by nearly a dozen different manufacturers during World War II, making them

available to the Allies as well as American forces fighting in Europe and the Pacific. While not as well armed as its German opponents, the Sherman proved to be

reliable, relatively fast, and produced in great numbers.

As combat evolved during the conflict American tankers changed their tactics to confront and defeat the enemy’s superior armor.

Michael Sapraicone, Senior Armor Museum Trustee said, “This museum is a unique commitment by public and private sectors to preserve and present a seminal chapter in the history of our world that is still defining current events around the globe. But to put that in perspective, we need to hear from our veterans who crewed the Sherman so there is a first-hand perspective on our nation’s heritage.”

Town Of Babylon Allocates Funds For Life-Saving Equipment

The Town of Babylon has allocated $388,263.44 in funding from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA) to three of its local fire departments for the purchase of important equipment to keep the public safe. The ARPA funding will allow Wyandanch Fire Department to obtain a new ladder truck, and funds were also given to West Babylon and North Lindenhurst Fire Departments to acquire LUCAS devices, which assist with the performance of CPR.

Securing these important resources allows the fire departments to more efficiently respond to emergencies and ensure the safety of the Town of Babylon and its residents. The new ladder truck substantially increases the number of emergencies that can be handled at a time.

The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement, will unite residents across Long Island on October 16th, at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5.

In its 29th year, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement embraces a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost, while raising awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. “Thanks in large part to the decades of work and the dollars raised, a breast cancer diagnosis does not come without hope, and the breast cancer journey is not one that has to be traveled alone,” says Brittany Lawton, Associate Director, Development.

This year, female breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with more than 287,000 women

diagnosed. Men are also impacted by breast cancer, with an estimated 2,710 men expected to receive a diagnosis in 2022.

Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.

“The opportunity to obtain this equipment means a lot to us,” said Chief of Wyandanch Fire Department Jarvis Brown. “Wyandanch has a bunch of high-rise buildings in the area, and a new ladder truck with the latest safety accessories gives us the ability to operate better and faster than we did before.”

LUCAS devices are also incredibly important. They are life-saving in the face of cardiac arrest.

“Studies have shown that consistent highquality CPR through all phases of patient transport produces a much higher success rate in recovering from cardiac arrest,” said Chief of North Lindenhurst Fire Department Kenneth

“The number of rescue calls in the West Babylon Fire District increases without fail every year, and many of those calls are cardiac arrests,” said Commissioner of the West Babylon Fire District John Manzi. “The LUCAS device obtained with the ARPA funding will become the District’s third and be placed in the south ambulance. The device will enable the south ambulance to respond to cardiac arrest calls immediately, rather than depending on a response from the first responder car or north ambulance with LUCAS devices.”

Take Charge America Explains Potential Risks, Pitfalls With Popular Payment Plan Options

Buy now pay later services are responsible for $100 million in annual transactions and have quickly become a go-to financial tool for millions of Americans. Although these options provide an easier way to make purchases, they aren’t without risks.

“People love the convenience, but there remains a lot of misunderstanding surrounding BNPL services and their impact on people’s financial lives,” said Amy Maliga, a financial educator with Take Charge America, a nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency.

“With that confusion, it’s easy to miss the potential risks. That’s why it’s always important to take a closer look at a new service or product — especially ones that make it easier to part with your hard-earned money.”

Before using BNPL services, Maliga says it’s important to keep in mind the following:

They are a form of credit. BNPL providers may promote themselves as a simpler way to pay for everyday purchases without relying on debt or

credit, but don’t be fooled: BNPL payments are a type of credit. And if you miss a payment, some services charge late fees or interest. Be cautious when using these services, as you can easily get in over your head.

You’ll likely spend more. There’s a reason retailers aggressively promote BNPL: People tend to spend more using these services. A LendingTree survey found two-thirds of shoppers spent more using BNPL plans than they would have otherwise. Before completing that latest purchase, check your budget and bank account. Be sure you can really afford what you’re buying instead of putting yourself at risk of falling into debt.

Inconsistent credit score impacts. Most BNPL providers don’t report on-time payment data to the major credit bureaus, meaning you receive none of the upsides of responsible repayment. However, negative events like missed payments or collections activity, are likely to be reported. This makes it even more critical to make your BNPL payments on time and avoid missing any.

No consumer protections. Because of BNPL’s standard fourinstallment payment plans, these services fall outside the purview of the Truth in Lending Act. Translation: Consumers have no protection from any potential predatory or deceptive lending practices with BNPL providers.

Federal law requires five installments before triggering any regulations.

Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Sought

4-Session Training In November

Breast cancer survivors can help others coping with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The four-day training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays in November (November 1, 8, 15 and 22) from 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. Attendance at all four sessions is necessary.

This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

Those who complete the training will have opportunities to provide support and guidance on the hotline; attend community outreach events to support underserved communities;

deliver educational presentations and speaking engagements; assist with local and national press and media; and help with fundraising efforts.

Eagle Pride Shines During West Babylon’s Homecoming

West Babylon School District celebrated its homecoming with two days of fun-filled activities for the entire school community. On Sept. 30, West Babylon Senior High School held an outdoor pep rally with a carnival theme.

Bounce houses and food trucks were on site as well as carnival games for all ages to enjoy. The

West Babylon cheerleaders kept the crowd engaged as they rallied to take on the Copiague Eagles for the football game on Saturday.

Due to the damp weather conditions, the West Babylon Senior High School classes didn’t have the opportunity to show off their homecoming floats. However, as game time approached, the rain cleared, and the

community came together to show their support for the West Babylon Eagles. In the matchup against Copiague, the West Babylon football team were able to take home the win with a final score of 49-8. To close out the homecoming celebration, the West Babylon Senior High School held its homecoming dance on Saturday evening.
