The Wall That Heals To Visit The Town Of Babylon Exhibit Spreads The Healing Legacy Of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

From October 5 to 8, the Town of Babylon will proudly host the traveling exhibit The Wall That Heals at Tanner Park. The traveling exhibit is a ¾ replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. that pays tribute to over three million Americans who served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. A smaller replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall similar to this exhibit drew thousands to Town Hall back in 1995. The Town of Babylon is fundraising in coordination with the event and already surpassed its $20,000 goal, now exceeding $40,000.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to continue supporting our veterans and provide access to this powerful piece of history to all of our residents,” said

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “We hope that this monument not only provides solace and strength but learning and growth as well.”

The Wall That Heals has already aided thousands of veterans in their healing process, empowering them to encounter The Wall in the familiarity of their own communities. It also serves as an important source of peace for family and friends of veterans, as well as an educational tool. The exhibit will be escorted from Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum to Tanner Park on October 3 and assembled on October 4. The Wall That Heals will then be open from the morning of October 5 to 1:45 p.m. on October 8, when it will be deconstructed. Two ceremonies will take place at the site as well: the Welcome Home Ceremony on October 5 at 4:00 p.m. and Purple Heart Ceremony, in which

a purple heart will be buried and a candlelight vigil held, on October 6 at 6:00 p.m.

“Our Town is incredibly proud to host The Wall That Heals,” said Chair of the Town of Babylon Veterans Advisory Council and Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “I would like to give a special thanks to Charles Spencer as cochair for his key role in bringing the exhibit to our community, as well as to everyone who made this possible. I encourage all of our residents to experience this impactful monument and all of the meaning it holds.”

Community groups who wish to receive an educational tour of the exhibit should learn more at https://townofbabylon. com/828/Educational-Tours and contact Mary Cascone at historian@townofbabylon. com or 631-587-3750. Volunteers are also needed from October 3 to 8. To

Dementia Conversations Event Takes Place Oct. 3

In partnership with The Bristal Assisted Living, the Long Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will be holding an in-person event called “Dementia Conversations” on Tuesday, October 3 from 6:30-7:30 p.m at The Bristal in West Babylon

Often, conversations with family about changing behaviors can be challenging and uncomfortable. This program provides tips for families to address some of the most common issues

that are difficult to discuss. Common issues that we will be discussing include going to a doctor for a diagnosis, deciding when to stop driving and making legal and financial plans for future care

“When someone is showing signs of dementia, it is important for a family to address the changes that are happening to your loved one,” said Alaina Nathan, Program Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Chapter. “We are here to provide the

Long Island community the resources that you need to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia.”

To register for the event, visit https://www. communityresourcefinder. org/ResourceView/ Index?id=2966633

Babylon Junior-Senior High School has been named a School of Distinction for the 2022-2023 school year by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). This prestigious award is given only to schools in which all of their varsity sports teams have achieved NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Team status throughout the course of the school year. Babylon was one of only 20 high schools in Suffolk County to be named a School of Distinction, and one of only 35 across the Island.

“This recognition is a testament to our student athletes’ dedication both on the field and in the classroom,” said Babylon Athletic Director Michael De Joseph. “Congratulations to our students, coaches, and staff for this great

accomplishment.”

Towards the end of each sports season, the NYSPHSAA honors varsity teams that have excelled both athletically and academically as Scholar Athlete teams. The NYSPHSAA specifically awards varsity teams that collectively earn a grade point average of 90 percent or higher during the season.

Babylon High School had all 24 of its teams achieve Scholar Athlete status throughout all three seasons for 2022-2023.

“This is another reminder of the Babylon School District’s excellent record both academically and athletically,” said Superintendent of Schools Carisa Manza. “Our student athletes worked so hard throughout the year, and we are so happy that their collective efforts are being recognized.”

With fewer volunteers coming through the door, one population is stepping in to take up the slack – specialneeds individuals. As part

With

A Decline In

Volunteerism,

Special-Needs Volunteers Are At A Premium

of their day, many specialneeds individuals perform a range of tasks for not-forprofits that help to keep the doors open and the milk of

human kindness flowing.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps survey, volunteer participation was

at 23.2 percent, a drop of 7 percent between 2019 and 2021 – the largest decrease the survey has seen since its 2002 inception.

Special-needs individuals step in to do the most basic tasks to more intricate things such as data entry, interacting with donors and computer and office tasks.

“Our clients make the decision about which organizations they’d like to volunteer with,” says Christina Abbinanti of Life’s WORC in Garden City. She said that clients participate as part of the Program Without Walls that allows special-needs individuals to integrate into the community. The clients volunteer at a range of organizations throughout the week. “They also learn valuable job and interpersonal skills.”

At Hair We Share on Long Island, special-needs volunteers keep the doors

open and allow the allvolunteer organization to continue to provide free, hand-laced wigs to medical patients. The wigs, which average $4,000 each, are custom fitted to patients.

“Volunteers are our life blood,” says co-founder Dean Riskin. “We have no paid staff. We have seventyfive-thousand ponytails we are sitting on that need to be sorted, weighed and bagged and we couldn’t do it without them.”

In addition to getting a warm feeling about helping, special-needs volunteers hone important work and

social skills that help them when they apply for jobs.

Learn more about how your not-for-profit organization could partner with them by calling Abbinanti at 516-741-9000, extension 8640; or JoAnn Vitale of RISE Life Services in Riverhead at 631-7276220, ext. 224.

Riskin of Hair We Share, which also accepts donations toward the wig-making process, can be reached at 631-478-2966. Hair We Share is headquartered in Roslyn Heights.

PSEG Long Island Provides Long Island Cares With Nearly $30,000

PSEG Long Island commends Long Island Cares, Inc. – the Harry Chapin Food Bank’s commitment to the environment for installing an electric vehicle (EV) charging station at its Hauppauge headquarters.

The food bank received rebates of $29,313 for installing a workplace electric vehicle charger with two ports, which will help it save money so it can support more families in need. The charger will power the organization’s growing EV fleet of vans and trucks, and allow employees and visitors to charge their EVs for free.

“PSEG Long Island applauds Long Island Cares for installing an EV charging station and purchasing EVs to replace some of its gas-powered vehicles,” said Michael Voltz, director of Energy Efficiency and Renewables, PSEG Long Island. “These measures will help support

the environment and also save the organization money. Hopefully it can also serve as a model for other organizations. We’re happy to support this wonderful philanthropic organization in more ways that help them provide food for our neighbors in need.”

“We’re extremely grateful to PSEG Long Island for its continued support of our work at the regional food bank,” said Paule Pachter, president and CEO of Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank. “They have been important partners in our efforts to address food insecurity on Long Island by sponsoring several farmers market programs, generously donating energy efficient light bulbs to share with the many families and individuals that we assist, and by making it possible for us to install EV charging stations at our headquarters in Hauppauge. Through their generous support

we can transition some of our gas-powered vehicles to more energy efficient EVs, which will enable

Long Island Cares to save money that we can invest in feeding our neighbors in need.”

incentives, as well as energy saving tips, please visit https://www.psegliny.com/ savemoney.

Lung Association Launches First LUNG FORCE Walk

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths on Long Island –and throughout the U.S. In an effort to end lung cancer, the American Lung Association is launching its first ever LUNG FORCE Walk Long Island at Eisenhower Park on October 7, 2023.

LUNG FORCE initiative unites those impacted by lung cancer and their caregivers to stand together against lung cancer. LUNG FORCE Walks happen all around the county as celebratory

and welcoming events that provides critical funds for lifesaving lung cancer research, early detection initiatives and awareness. The New York City Walk, which took place in May, saw more than 1,000 people participate, raising over $275,000.

Registration for the Long Island event is open at LUNGFORCE.org/ LongIsland

“The Long Island community has been deeply impacted by Lung Cancer, and many Long Island residents have

joined us for events in Manhattan and the Hudson Valley. This year, we are proud to bring our LUNG FORCE walk right here to Eisenhower Park where more families impacted by lung disease are able to participate,” said Erica Masin, Executive Director at the Lung Association. “Today, more Americans than ever are surviving lung cancer. The survival rate has increased by nearly 40% in the past decade—but there is still so much work to be done. On October 7 Long

Island residents will come together to lighten the burden for people living with lung disease, honor the memory of those we’ve lost, and lift up those who need our support.”

Nicole Sturiano, a resident of Ridge, New York and captain of Team Jeanine has helped raise over $50,000 and has participated in the New York City LUNG FORCE Walk since its inception in 2015. She said, “My sister, Jeanine, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer at only 42 years old. After

NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS SERVICE DIRECTORY

just two years of fighting the toughest battle of her life, Jeanine passed away on December 1, 2015. Our team has been walking to carry on the legacy of my sister, to advance the effort to find a cure, and to bring awareness to lung cancer. I hope one day to see a world free of lung cancer so that no one has to suffer the way my sister did, and no one has to lose their loved one to lung cancer.”

The LUNG FORCE Walk is great for friends, family and company teams to come together to support

people with lung disease and lung cancer, have fun and get some great exercise. Joining the LUNG FORCE Walk supports the work of the American Lung Association to defeat lung cancer, improve the air we breathe, reduce the burden of lung disease on individuals and their families, and eliminate tobacco use and tobaccorelated diseases.
